Old Nums 老数字们 by Thoth
Gameplay Introduction: This is a game about old num tech. You need to use old numerical systems other than Arabic numerals, "Old Nums", to reach the target number you need to output, which is written in the bottom right corner. You can use the mouse to press buttons to input numbers in Arabic numerals, use "C" to delete numbers, and use "=" to output numbers.
The output numbers will appear in an output bar, and you can learn how to use these numbers through comparison! When you output the target number, a "continue" will appear in the bottom right corner, and then you can proceed to the next level.
If you find mouse input too troublesome, you can use the keyboard's number keys, Backspace, and Enter to input 1 to 0, C, and =.

Of course, if you find learning these Old Nums too difficult, you can also observe the facial expression of the guy behind you who is listening to you, as well as the balance scale. If the guy looks disappointed or the scale tilts to the right, your guess is too small; if the guy laughs heartily or the scale tilts to the left, your guess is too big. This way, you can also solve the problem just by guessing.
A little background and some thoughts on the development:
This is my second LDJam entry. The "old tech" theme is both fascinating and deeply historical. I originally planned to make a game about currency—after all, currency has a long history as "old tech." But it eventually evolved into "old nums" instead.
The main reason was that the Mayan and Babylonian numeral systems are truly unique. Also, while I was recently learning Arabic, I realized that Arabic-speaking regions actually don't use the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0 that I call "Arabic numerals." That’s how this project gradually came to life.
I wrote a little background melody for each small scene (though they're quite rudimentary). Among all the numeral systems, I found the Mayan one the hardest. Because of this, I ended up drawing lots of custom fonts during development, such as Mayan numerals, Eastern Arabic numerals, and Babylonian numerals. The levels cover Roman, Arabic, Mayan, Chinese, Babylonian, and even binary. Overall, they turned out to be really fun levels.
Since I'm Chinese, I can easily read the Chinese characters, which is exactly what makes these old systems so interesting. If a Mayan or an ancient Babylonian were playing, they'd probably find their respective puzzles just as easy.
Thanks for playing! Feel free to leave a comment letting me know which level's numerals you found the most complicated! If you're a numbers whiz and speedran through them, I'd love to hear about that too! And of course, if you spot any errors in the numeral systems, please let me know in the comments!
(Due to technical constraints, while the Chinese numerals in this game are written correctly from right to left, the "row-first-then-column" order is actually incorrect. In ancient China, the order was generally "column-first-then-row," from right to left.)
