Deep Truth by Emily C

[raw]
made by Emily C for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

Hear me out, bro.

A sentence, spoken. A promise of what is to come. Like Socrates and Plato, now you will delve into the depths of truth to unveil what lies beneath. Among bottles of half-drunk beer and shafts of mushrooms nibbled, lies Nirvana.

Welcome to Deep Truth. The game about digging your rabbit hole together with a trusted companion - and falling through time and space to reach the ultimate conclusion. Perhaps Emma Watson made frogs susceptible to Wi-Fi? Perhaps the Bible tells the REAL story of 9/11 if you read it backwards at midnight. We will never know unless we delve deep into the pits of our minds to reach...

DEEP TRUTH.

Layer 1.jpg Layer 2.jpg Layer 3.jpg Layer 4.jpg

[Developer's note] I do not apologize for the beautiful beats or the bountiful 2D masterworks.

[ PATCH NOTICE ] We had a horrible bug that caused the game to run like utter trash - compromising complete and utter truth to be found in the depths. This caused us to have to make a second submission 18:38 08/04-2025. We believe the game was unplayable for people with lower specs - and locking the truth behind economic barriers goes against the spirit of Ludum Dare.

Damn, now that was a good game! Started with middling expectations, but once it kicked off into the first run, I was really impressed with the visuals - once I died, I thought "That's neat, pretty good for a jam" - and then the dude started rambling off his theory. Full ear to ear grin moment right there, went right back in with "OK, But" because I had to get it a second time. And yes, it was just as good second time around, props to getting all that stuff voiced, and voiced well!

As far as detriments go, all I'd say is that its a bit hard at times to tell if you're actually going to hit or miss, and gets worse the farther off center you go. I suppose I could say there's some thematic consistency to things getting less stable the farther off center you go, but I don't think that was the specific intent there lol.

Overall really impressive, I don't often give out 5 star overalls but this came together perfectly! Entire team should be proud of this one.

@profugo-barbatus wow thank you so much for that! Yes I totally agree with you point about the player position. We use a pretty big FOV on the camera, which sort of sells the depth better, but that makes the parallaxing when coming up close even worse. The reason we have those circle coming once in a while, that you cannot hit, is to sort of frame what you are seeing in front of you, but it still a bit lacking :)

edit: thinking about it a little bit longer, what we could have done is to have basically a long stick sticking out from the characters stomach to show where straight down from the character. Or even better a laser pointer beaming forward and drawing where the actor mid will hit upcoming objects.

Lol. The concept is hilarious. Had some good time listening to crackpots mumbling. Liked how you guys made this "deep thought" generator's voiceover! The runner gameplay section is visually cool and impressive, but the gameplay itself feels a bit clumsy and irritating - too hard to navigate through all those surreal 3d forms floating around. Really great ! I'm usually really bad at this kind of game and ... it's still the case but the ranting between the two friends made me want to play several games in a row :smile:
The only downside is sometimes it's a bit unclear of what is a obstacle or not and some bonus seems impossible to reach without taking damage (or I'm just very bad).

Woo! Thanks for that! Yes, the music is a little cool system that I keep remaking whenever we make a game!

Essentially you have a couple of random arrays of instrument stings that all go together - and then you just have level one play one instrument randomly looping its segments and adding another instrument on top for each level. It's so much bang for the buck, honestly!

A very interesting concept of the game, as if instead of throwing dice in Disco Elysium they added falling to depth in order to get the most twisted thought :D

I really like the change between a calm conversation and such abstract action.

Unfortunately, because of the camera it is not always obvious whether you will crash into an obstacle or not. It would also be nice to increase the size of the first aid kits to pick them up for sure.

I don't know what could be done, but the tunnels that I need to go through to increase the depth of a thought block the visibility of what is further, and this, on the contrary, interferes with the progression of the flight.
Perhaps it is possible to distance the obstacles from each other, since sometimes they are very close in height to each other, and due to visibility, this imposes additional complexity.

I can say that the game has a very good balanced game loop. And the visuals in the bar give the right mood and attitude to what will be said by one of its inhabitants :D
A cool deep game!

Thank you for the lovely comment!

I agree that the gameplay becomes a little bit muddy when the game throws everything at you, but then again, there's kind of where our difficulty lies, haha
SurWeaver
12. Apr 2025 · 07:05 UTC
@bananplyte I completely agree :D The difficulty is basically quite good, so that it feels challenging and doesn't feel too easy. You need to have some kind of challenge so that the player gets to know the game and its mechanics properly.

lmao. Did some dude just shout "carl sagan" at me?? This game is gold, absolutely loved every moment. Perfect difficulty, great humor, voice acting... a powerful combination. Great work on this one, the extra bit of context and character the bars scenes add around the "endless runner" style gameplay really makes this one feel unique and worth experiencing. Gonna get super stoned and try it again to really see how deep I can go....

Love this take on a dropper style game! super funny, the commentary is hilarious.
One thing I might add is some sort of visual indication of where the player is in the Z space. Sometimes it's a bit hard to tell how far/close an object is from you. Maybe some post process effect to blur or distort objects further from the player would have been cool!

GuitarBro
14. Apr 2025 · 23:59 UTC
Now those are some wild theories lol

Even if the graphics were pretty simple, there was lots of charm on this one. The randomized "deep truths" were a nice touch to incentivize retrying to see what would come next. It did feel like sometimes you just got unlucky with the obstacles and they all lined up in a way that you couldn't avoid, but it wasn't too much of an issue since it was so quick to retry. Also the 3D perspective made it a bit hard to tell where you were in relation to the obstacles as they were coming at you... some kind of distance lines or something similar to help gauge the depth (no pun intended) would be pretty helpful. Overall, a very fun entry regardless!

Thank you for the lovely review and best of luck in your stoner mission!

@braeden
Yes I would kind of agree haha, turns out making a dropper game is kind of hard. It really does work in first person, but then we wouldn't have the funny green-haired dude which is ultimately just a prize too high to pay

@silkworm-sweatshop
Haha yes they are actually modular so they're built up in [Intro] + (50% chance)([Pre-Character-Sentence] + [Character] + [Post-Character-Sentence])([Pre-Writing-Sentence] + [Writing] + [Post-Writing-sentence])) + [Argument] + ([Therefore] + (50% chance)([Pre-Character-Sentence] + [Character] + [Post-Character-Sentence])([Pre-Writing-Sentence] + [Writing] + [Post-Writing-sentence])) + [Argument])x[how-many-extra-paragraphs-you-want]

I then had to break this down to a binary format and parse it through a meta sound file where it plays about 30 minutes of my voice acting. I think the vast majority of our filesize is just my crazed late night rambling

@guitarbro
Open your eyes to the truth, bro, it aint theories, them's facts.

Hahaha awesome I had a lot of laughts with that one XD I didn't really expect the gameplay but I guess that's not the most important here...

The music is very trippy, and voice acting hilarious. This is gonna blow your mind but there is a secret key in that game that allow to travel after death and reach the wormhole level and also do some other odd funny things during other screens, that's a secret David Lynch told me between 2 pieces of salmon.
In term of game design well it's very colorful and trippy as mentioned, but a bit hard and punitive sometimes :) I've reached almost 500 (without using the magic thing) ; I stayed longer in between retries listening to these truth than in the "game" loop XD That was really funny well done mixing all these sentences together that's great, it took me awile to understand it was generated and that blewed my mind. In term of gameplay for the 3d game part, well as I said it's a bit hard maybe it could be nice having more health/bonuses ?

This is a very nice educational game, congrats !

Thank you so much for your lovely review! I love that you cracked how we did the deep truth system haha, it's definitely the one system that has the most potential for the [Unnecessary-Black-Hole-Of-A-Development-Time-Sink] haha!

Cool that you liked the trippy music too! That's also on me messing around with side-quests before we even had a game loop lol

I absolutely agree that if we had more time some more bonuses would have been super cool, but as for the difficulty I think we made it somewhat hard on purpose to have you play more short runs rather than one long round

Cool game! Great music and theme use, I wish the camera followed the player but aside from that I had a lot of fun here, it was certainly perfect for the 4/20 stream. It seemed like some obstacles were totally unavoidable but maybe I'm just terrible! I did manage to get an S though so that makes up for all my floundering. It's a lot of fun hearing the pseudo-randomly cobbled together psychedelic realizations after each fatal faceplant. Thanks for stopping by the stream!

Hah! A real trip, man! ✌ Let me tell you - I once heard that making a game like this is similar to the practice of voodoo initiation, as Frank Herbert put it, wormification, for you know that imbibing psycho-active radiation cubes while listening to some peaceful deep insight can be as gratifying as sitting down on a really nice fluffy chair, or so Danny de Vito said on the radio-tv. But like, the cubes, or more likely compound BA-3542, by NASA codification, can be quite hard to touch consistently - the wigglies, they like, wiggle, and take you back out of the trip a lot. They can be real downers. But then the beat and the voice just drag you right back in, like a concert of the Grateful Dead.
So you know, legit. Peace ☮
