Deep Dish Pizzagram by Thoastbot

[raw]
made by Thoastbot for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

You're a new recruit from the notorious Pizza Syndicate—now it's time to go deeper. Welcome to the Deep Dish Pizza Syndicate, where we don’t just make pizzas, we craft stories baked into layers of cheesy, saucy depth.

In this game, you're not just building a pizza—you're building a narrative. Create your very own Deep Dish Pizza with as many layers as you want. Each layer can hold ingredients, ideas, or even secrets. And once you're done, you can preview your masterpiece as a mini-movie, one layer at a time.

Name your pizza, write a short description, and upload it to the Syndicate's sacred Menu, where others can view and appreciate your flavorful creation. No worries—there are only likes, no text comments, no dislikes. This is a safe space for deep (and weird) expression.

Share the depths of your imagination in the most delicious format possible: a Deep Dish Pizza.

Inspired by a game I last played over 20 years ago — Pizza Syndicate — i hope fans of the original will feel right at home.

TUTORIAL

  • Ingredients: Use them to decorate your Pizza, while in hand use mousewheel to turn it arround.
  • Peel: Use this to bake your Pizza and put it on the menu.
  • Sauce: Use this to add a new layer to your deep dish, You can also rightlclick it to go down your layer or use the mousewheel while hovering it.
  • Shredder: Leftclick with Ingredient to make it smaller, rightclick to make it bigger
  • Price: Used to "play" your Pizze (animate it)
  • Bin: With ingredient in hand you get rid of the ingredient, without anything in your hand you delete your Pizza.
  • Menu: Go here to see and like other peoples deep dish pizzas.

You can also copy the URL of any Pizza in the Menu to share it or save it for later visits!

I used: - VSC to code - Paint.net for art (wanted to use pixel composer, but didn't in the end) - FL Studio with my voice and stuff around me for Audio - The whole Code is in html/css/php and mainly plain old Javascript - no engine or anything, startet with an empty folder.

EDIT Forgot to mention the Pizzagram works with a database and a bit of PHP code for a small API.

How dare you... The absolute nerve you must have... To create something THIS awesome in 48 hours using no engine? I tip my hat to you. I'm really amazed and want to take some time to thank you for doing this, bringing the absolute proof to the table that even in a game jam, such as LD, there is room for experimentation and that (unless specified offcourse), the tools do not really matter. As far as the game goes, my kids absolutely loved it, especially the feature they could share URL's with their pizza to one another. Got a great giggle out of it. Unfortunately, they now want to make fresh pizza instead of takeaway :p

I was waiting to play this game as soon as I saw the post. It is really simple but I like it. It is like the best part from the "Good Pizza, Great Pizza", only making your own.

Reminds me a bit of good old Pizza Tycoon. I'm never going to say no to a Pizza simulator. Good fun, I do like to see a chill game in this jam. Overall well done!

I really like your take on the theme, using "depths" to mean *layers of chicago pizza* is really creative.

As for the game - I can't really say much, maybe except for the fact that I wished the functions were a bit more explained and not.. vibes-based, I guess? Being able to go through layers easier would be a big plus as well.

But I'm really glad there's an actual pizzagram and you can look through others' creations. Shoutouts to whoever made the 144 layer deep dish!

Overall - great idea, but feels a bit.. UNDERBAKED! Ha haha.. Ha.. Come on now, it wasn't that bad of a joke.

Thanks for the game, keep on making stuff <3

Finally! When the theme was announced, I was afraid we would be flooded with various deep dish pizza simulators with online social features. I am baffled that it took me trying and rating ~45 games before I finally came across this.

And the fact that you can add layers with different toppings and make the pizza truly great and truly deep, is, just, well - chef's kiss.

Please vote for my pizza.

cheers,

Chef Ditam

*(I drew my pizza expecting the play button to go forward rather than backwards...)*

That's quite the twist to have the animations play backwards like that :P. It was super
fun seeing everybody's creations.

One issue I noticed is that the textures seem to load in after the game starts running, which
was a bit confusing at first. I would have been happy to wait on a loading screen
while the images took their time to download if that meant the game would be ready to go when I started playing.

Really clever idea! What Kind of service did you use to host the pizzagram ?

You should consider using github (or gitlab) for hosting the source, it makes it easier to explore, share and so on. I'd love to add you to my list of github LD entries : https://github.com/stars/dhmmasson/lists/ludum-dare-57-compo

I made a post with some [tips for making a github repository for LD](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/focus-hunt/preparing-your-github-repository-for-ludum-dare-57).

@henk Yeah, my image buffer is made in a way i dont need to load images and only have to draw them on my canvas, so sprites get loaded the moment they are needed the first time - i should've loaded all images initially to prevent those flashups :x

@dhim I'm using a database to save the pizzas and made a tiny api to upload them and the likes, noticing just now i didn't wrote PHP as used code, gonna fix that. Have to look into github setup, your link is bookmarked but i'm not sure i got the time rn to get into it and make a repo for this LD - but will use it next time to have a repo up and running, thanks for that post! :)

Pretty cool - took me a while to figure out the placement. Once the compo is over it'd be cool to see a gallery of all the stuff created haha, especially the artistic ones like @jern

I absolutely loved this, so fun to have a little creative tool to make some animations with. Just hats off to you, I really liked the interpretation of the theme. Audio was lovely.
