LootBot Dungeon by Tsaot

[raw]
made by Tsaot for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

ldcoverImage.png Program bots to delve the randomly generated dungeon depths. I unfortunately wasn't able to get everything I wanted in. I hope you enjoy exploring anyway.

The first bot has a demo program already so hit send on it to see what it does. The programming interface has tooltips to explain the buttons, so hover the mouse if you wish.

I think I'll continue working on this one and see what more I can make of it. There's potential here.

Cool concept! I really liked the keyboard to input movement. It was pretty intuitive and worked well! We had a similar concept in our game for limiting movement to a few key actions, so it was cool to see it implemented in a different way.

One thing that would have been neat is seeing the instructions for bots lost to the dungeon. Sometimes I would get so far, but then lose the robot so it would be nice to mostly replicate the path.

Thanks @justine-olshan! There were plans to have a program manger so you could name programs and keep them and copy them to bots but time struck. There were soo many ideas not implemented! I may have gotten too ambitious. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I really like programming games. Sending out the bots and having them explore what you told them was really interesting. Having some kind of free-roam camera on rooms you've already explored would be really convenient. I see how much work you put into the programming aspect, being able to click and backspace and insert things was intuitive and super easy to control. I also really liked being able to change cameras, and swapping the main camera to a smaller window. I noticed that my bots would only return home if they bonked, so bots that I sent out that just.... finished their orders but didn't collide with anything, didn't come back home. Either way, I really like this as a foundation you can build upon. It's really solid and really well assembled. Good work!

@t-c Yeah, I should have explained the return command somewhere. The return command turns the bot around and runs the program backwards to make the bot automatically come back. Otherwise you have to program the return instructions manually.

I also totally agree on the camera. That's what the entrance camera was supposed to be but ran out of time.

Great idea, especially at a jam where we're all trying to make a bunch of machines do some wacky stuff and it often blows up in our face. I think you didn't just hit the theme, you hit the jam meta. Well done!

I really like the idea of the game, the programming made sense, and I thought the lootbots looked good.

One improvement would be adding an objective or collectible close to the entrance, so the player can get a sense of success early to encourage them to keep playing.

Additionally, adding a simple music track or sound effect for the lootbots moving would elevate the game a lot!

I do quite enjoy these instruction assembly type games, it reminds me of some physical toys I have seen. The tooltips were a good idea, as I saw the return to base step was why my bots kept getting stranded, but the first one did not. I would have liked to see the second screen show the instructions being follows as the bot is moving, so it can be easy to see where it gets stuck and where to modify it for the next outing. A overall map that gets uncovered would be nice as well.
The real genius I believe is the ability to send out multiple bots at once. I did not realize it was possible at first until I tried it, and it felt really cool being able to put them all out in different ways. The puzzle solving potential with multiple coordinated bots is incredible! Keep up the good work!

+ Complex bot control Good concept
- the goal of the game is not very clear

Nice concept, the scope seems to be a little too big for one week-end, but I would be glad to see an improved version of the game !

@haoro I learned that very well this time. I didn't get to loot, buying bots and upgrades, monsters, puzzle-rooms... Heck, the rooms are supposed to be assembled from random walls, doors, and floors, and there is only one type of door, one type of wall, and three types of floor. I totally intend to keep working on this game.

Nice programming mechanic, i think that it need some more dynamic, like monsters or whatever you can come up ^_^

Robot programming bit is a fine touch, but I' more impressed with the camera control it really sells the feel!

Well done!

Cool idea, it would be nice to speed up the bots or the game at some point and see all the map. Good work.

Really interesting game! It reminded me of school days when we programmed little robots to move through mazes.

I agree with the comments about the camera — it makes things a bit tricky sometimes. I also think it would be fun to add some surprises, like hidden treasures or monsters. And maybe a tiny bit of story — like, what are we looking for down there?

All in all, it’s a solid piece of work. Thanks for the game!

It's an interesting entry, but recursion should be included, as the common 'maximum recursion depth exceeded' error is closely related to the theme.
