Attention Spam

We at Big Social Media Corp need your help! Our valued ~~product~~ customer Steve has been very productive lately. Let's fix that. Control a horde of tiny Social Media Algorithms to keep up that Doomscrolling spiral.

Your goal is to keep Steve's attention up by maneuvering tiny Algorithms (Algos) to Steve's phone. As they spawn they carry a nice new Push Notification from one of your lovely Social Media sites, such as Photogram or Wriddit. All good. But we here at BSMC are all about money and being efficient. So we gave you one controller for all Algos. Simple, isn't it?

Oh and also keep an eye on any outside notifications around new internet laws and stuff. Those might make your trip to Steve's phone much harder.

Liked the idea, it's a fun spin on the theme. Just wish there were more sfx

Such a nice concept! IDK if time waster is from the character or the player.... haha just kidding

Some minor details: There's a typo in the window title. And for linux, if you pack using tar.gz it would keep the executable permission. I had to do a chmod +x to run the app. But these are just minor details, I had a lot of fun playing it. Thanks for this game!

what a waste of time... literally ;)
Really cool game tho. I like that it becomes more challanging the longer you play.
And some of the notification are really good :D

Cool concept!
- The writing on the notifications is top notch, love it!
- Is there a fail state? I couldn't really see/figure one out. Seems to need a fail state, and what the fail state is would apply different kinds of pressure to the gameplay. I left the game running and saw the fail state, but I can't really tell how - AH I SEE - the eyeballs. So it moves so subtly that it's hard to tell that it was moving at all, it does a jump when you score, but that's still hard to tell unless you're already looking at it. One way of making a "meter"'s change state more obvious to the player is to make it in increments - so instead of 1 pixel every second, make it like a visible increment of 10 pixels every 10 seconds. The outcome is the same but it will look more obvious.
- The notifications touching each other being removed - I guess I understand mechanically why, but it doesn't make sense :p
- One of my notifications turned into a red spinning fireball and I have no idea why?
- I think the game could use some speeding up - that is, faster critter movement, and/or faster progression, or an additional movement/traversal mechanic to break up the slow march towards the goal.
- Maybe penalise the player for losing a critter, though it doesn't make sense to subtract from attention directly.

@tuism Thanks for your suggestions :3

- Yea I was thinking about including a meter below but decided against it but thought it would be nice for people to figure it out xD good suggestion with the pixel skips tho
- It started off as a fix when they spawn and collide, they would fly off xD became a "feature"
- Oh so the fireball thingy spawns on its own and I guess you were at the same position and it triggered the death
- They actually get faster, just not a lot xD

time to go watch some YT shorts... Anyway, this was surprisingly fun! I think I would have enjoyed some more challenge but it makes clear that those algos are pretty effective.

Things I learned about social media:
- it's all about delivery speed
- no one cares if content is lost
- laws are more like suggestions
- 25 minutes are 1.500 seconds. assuming that an average youtube short is about 20s and assuming an average watch time of 50%, thats 10s per short, so 150 shorts in 25 minutes. 1.000 shorts views make about 0,03$, so we earned roughly 0,0045$ - what a deal!

@acdia Damn! Very impressive. I suspect a bit that I might have forgotten to change the ending difficulty factor at around 6 minutes.. xDD

@imai-time well... I was letting the theme running through my head and tried to come up with an idea. While doing that I was scrolling social media and got like a push notification from Reddit about a Subreddit. And then I thought.. "Hey.. who delivers those push notifications". Yea. XD

Nice game idea, and I like the premise you went for. It's unfortunate I had to focus on where the creatures were going because I feel like I missed a lot of funny posts. Saylor Twift lol. I'm not sure when the game ends? After like 5 minutes (and beating your high score I think?) I quit because it felt like going endless. Anyway, nice game!

@sheepolution Thank you (: Yea if you noticed, the eyes of Steve's shrink over time and you can make them grow again by successfully delivering notifications. At some point the attention is gone and the game ends. @tuism suggested some nice improvements to this "meter" (:

And if you felt like it going endless: Yea.. that's doomscrolling :3

@dogesquad I did notice! I actually tried to get the eyes to touch the phone, thinking that might be some sort of win condition, but later on in the game that's quite difficult to manage.

Funny & simple game. Hate you for wasting my time ʕノ•ᴥ•ʔノ ︵ ┻━┻
Like game mechanic & references to media apps, but i would like to see more content in gameplay loop.

The relaxing music fits the game's mood very well. The gameplay is simple, but surprisingly addictive as controlling multiple objects and avoiding the traps take some attention and skill. I agree with the previous post that a lose condition would make the process more fun, as the player would more accurately judge how well they're doing, and therefore feel more challenged.

I liked the idea of moving all the characters at the same time, it presents an interesting challenge.

I feel the addiction already, my brain finely tuned for each new notification crossing the line. I like the loop of navigating each little algo across the line, with the twist of having to control all of them at once. Although I lost some to holes opening up underneath my little algos, which was frustrating. But not a huge deal. Overall a great game!

I found the concept really fun, great humor. It could be a little more challenging or have more diverse obstacles, but the headlines are gold. The sound effects were really cute and the music really adapted to the theme. Overall a really complete game for 48 hours.

Fact that I spend more eyesight on the phone not the sprites makes this experience really quite interesting... Me being both the guy in control and the guy controlled, very smart design.

Plus the rummors on L.com really got me, can't miss the trending Sailor Swift vs. Trownard Dump battle and more

The theme use was phenomenal in my opinion and the game's concept is great! I found it very hard to actually lose though and the game did get repetitive despite all the laws. Regardless, I really enjoyed it and thought it was a super well done game!

Great concept! I started off focusing more on the gameplay but ended up getting drawn to the feed and let my lower brain take over the critters (which feels appropriate). I ended up wasting about 10 minutes before quitting. Not sure if the challenge ramps up more after that but it didn't seem like it.

@silkworm-sweatshop I could argue that this is analogous to how people keep doomscrolling even if the stuff they get stays the same, hoping to find some more gems etc. And how this is a reflection on yourself if you keep going or not and when you can yourself break that doom spiral.

But no. I forgor to update the end difficulty value xD.

incredibly funny game! It is quite literally how my life looks sometimes! Played the game for 10 minutes could've gone more but the difficulty didn't increase anymore, the artstyle is funny, creative name and concept, overall a superb endless game experience!
