Stick Racing by Prunus Padis

[raw]
made by Prunus Padis for Ludum Dare 56 (COMPO)

Race you with car in the paper world of small stick figures!

I was interested in trying out how would game making work if you did all the drawings on paper and here it is!

Help: Use the car for easier driving, the physics are little weird.

All content in game done by me and my great artistic skills.

Used tools: * Unity Engine * Gimp * Muse score (sound track) * LMMS * Audacity * Paper, pen, scissors and scanner

the engine sound is just best ! Despite the slight lack of gameplay, this is the best thing I've seen today:thumbsup:

Indeed the engine sounds are the best! I love the graphical style too, a game made in my school math notebook or so something, such a jolly vibe to it!

I like the cute/playful vibe you went for. Nice experiment for sure and the perfect opportunity for a jam.
I only drove with the normal car. The track felt perhaps too tight, even for the normie. I shrug at the thought of trying the speed one..

The legibility of text has taken a hit from this approach. Now the thin line blurs into rest of the screen. Perhaps thicker marker or double lines could have helped.

Nice entry!

Such a cool graphical feature. Very cool style. I saw someone made a game using newspaper images. This is something else. Style is so adorable, need more polish, especially textm but at all its so cute.

Meanwhile gameplay has problems. Like, I dont want to try other cars, because there is only on map with 5 same laps. The sharp turns don't allow you to get going, which makes the game unfairly drawn out. 2-3 laps would be enough.

Turbo car is kinda too turbo for this map.

Music is so charming.

One of the games, you know. ;)

The paper drawings is a cool art style. the driving does need some work. i would increase the steering or change the level design. in the current state you will crash at every corner if you don't fully brake.

@buzzydev yeah sadly i didnt have time to tune the cars better or implement mulitple maps. The turbo is doable with controller where you have better controll of the acceleration.

Love the aesthetic, I especially like how the car paper gets more crumbled as you crash, great stuff. Appreciate how you committed to the visuals by making every single thing paper, not a single element deviates.
Boy the handling is very harsh, even the first car which is supposed to have good handling will barely let you make corners without coming to a full stop.
As CodeRaus said, the text legibility is a little bad, their markers suggestion is a good one.
Also, I wouldn't say this game fits the theme that much. I can sort of imagine that the tracks and cars are small and the driver is therefore a small creature, but that's about it.
The sounds effects and music are nice and simple, they're a good vibe.
For a solo dev, great job! Despite the gameplay suffering a little, the overall game is pretty cool.

I tried the SPEEED car.
It wasn't lying when saying it has no handling stat. :D
I guess it needs a controller so you can have a press sensitivity instead of just having 100% speed all the time?

The graphics are cool, the sound design also complements it. I imagined someone making the engine's sound with their mouth, lol. :D

I couldn't go back to the menu after the race, or maybe I was missing some keys (I tried enter, escape, random buttons and clicks). The normal car is my favorite so far, at least on a keyboard. :D

The physics feel good for a jam game, I'm not sure why do you call them weird. :D
The only weird part about them is when you hit the wall hard, but that's because the wall is 100% solid, it would fell weird either way. If the walls would deform/destroy, then even with the current physics I think it would be better, but making breakable walls is an unpopular choice in racing games. :)

Have you done these graphics on an actual paper? If yes, maybe you could add these photos of the work-in-progress to the game description?

Hey there! This is genuinely cool. I loved all the assets crafted from paper; it's such a creative touch. I'd definitely buy a full version of this game with more levels and some control tweaks on Steam.

One thing worth mentioning is that some letters have very little contrast, and I took a while to understand or even read the part that says I broke the car.

Perhaps using papers of different colors and/or writing the text with a marker or a thicker pen might do the trick.

The paper crumpled as we hit the car. Simply brilliant, by the way. 😊

Fun game, nice music. Cool idea with pen and paper graphics! Road and turn signs could use a bit of contrast thouh, maybe a pen with different color for turns, and some pencil shading for the road

A really liked handwritten the digits :)

This was super cool! I bet doing the art on graph paper and importing was a tedious, but fun process. Super innovative!

I think the gameplay needed a little more work, and maybe the assets could've used a bit of a border to differentiate them from each other. But still, good job!

I love that you went all in on the paper! It's a great aesthetic! As said by others the controls were a bit rough with the keyboard, but the crumpled paper car was a very nice touch, keep up the good work!

Love the idea, the music, sounds and art!
I tried paper for a jam once but had to take pictures of it 'cause I had no scanner. The result was greyish and meh, but here it looks real good and goes well with the sound FX (loved the engine <3) and the music. The paper being smashed for the damages is a nice touch.
Though, as a Crash Team Racing guy I kept looking for drift and boosts... or at least a way to take sharper turns. It's quite hard even with the basic car. So I cheated and ran back and forth on the line :grimacing:

Yo the artstyle is so good, really loved the whole paper drawing put into 3D space thing. Found the car really hard to control. Physics-wise it felt more like an ice cube sliding on the ground than a wheeled vehicle.

The paper art is splendid for a compo, even though it can be a bit hard to see at times. I couldn't rate you on the theme because I didn't quite see the connection. The gameplay is a simple car game, but the art really brings it to life. The sound design is on point; everything sounds nice and has a sound. All of this leads to a splendid atmosphere. And overall, I really like it! Well done!

Ahah, I love the art style :) A bit hard to control sometimes (especially when crashing into walls) but after sometime I managed to handle the basic car (2 minutes 6 seconds for the five laps).

I love the hand drawn / paper art style and the car noises, the handling can be a bit out of control but this was really good!

@she-wrote Yeah i could not bring the theme out that much but the point was thats its a small world stick-figures drawn on paper. I had plans to the skybox be make out of focus "childrens play room" or something like that but had to priorize other things.

The handdrawn art style is so cool! Driving is tough but it was fun nevertheless :) Oh, I escaped the track during one run xD:

A great entry! Good job!

Love the art style, and I loved the touch of the car getting more crumpled as you crashed!
2 minutes flat, 28s best lap.
The handling could do with a bit of work, as it felt like the only option for some of the corners was to come to a near dead stop. Other than that it was fun to play, a great entry!

Thats a fun game, I like the idea to make such graphics. BUT. where is the theme????

I usually don't like car games. But this one is so cool. I had hard times finishing the 5 laps, and I made it!

The idea to scramble the paper when your car gets bumped too much is great.

Indeed, the physics are not very convenient. Maybe the car should not be "reoriented" that much when hitting a wall. Many times, I was exactly perpendicular to the road, and it's hard to make a quarter of a turn, because each time you bump, you come back to the perpendicularity.

Thank you for this original idea. 5 stars on graphics, just because.

Lovely art style! I really like this idea.

I think the car physics and therefore the gameplay were not polished enough. It was really hard driving the cars around the corners. More space on the track would be helpful, but then still the driving physics need some adjustments.

The engine sound was really cool and concerning the theme, I also had in my mind, that if there was a "childrens play room" in the background the theme would actually fit very well, because a child plays with his little paper cars.

Seeing the damage on your car through the paper crumble is such a great idea, really love it! The UI on the other hand was hard too read (laps, time). Using bigger letters, for example by using a marker, would help to improve it. But despite that, I'm a big fan of the graphics. Congrats for finishing this game in just two days! :)

Loving the hand drawn art XD The paper crumble when you damage the car is a nice touch. While the UI can be a little hard to read due to the art style, I still really enjoyed the overall vibe.

This is so cool. I'm glad I tried the SUPER ULTRA FAST as well so I'd notice the funny paper crumbling effect for broken car. This must have been so much work and still it's pretty playable. Maybe it's just me but a bit better turning rate would have been nice. The art style kind of makes me emotional and takes me back to when I draw weird games on paper before I even knew how to make them. Love it!

Needs a bit of tuning on the racing controls but it is worth on idea and art alone!
