The Great Dangling by magopian

[raw]
made by magopian for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

You can either play the jam version of this game here (only in Firefox I believe), or the fixed version published on itch.io.

IF YOU ARE STUCK ON A LEVEL, PRESS "R" TO RESTART IT.

HOW TO PLAY: bring the last dangling tiny creature under your thumb to the next flashing target. Grow the dangle, get to the wine bottle!

The logic (not very logical, not very helpful to playing the game, you can skip this part):

You want to bring all the tiny creatures to their craving target:

  • blood drop -> bandaid
  • mosquito -> arm
  • spider -> web
  • frog -> lilypad
  • frenchie -> wine

How can you bring them to their target? By attracting them with something else they love!

  • mosquito -> blood drop
  • spider -> mosquito
  • frog -> spider
  • frenchie -> frog

The gameplay is building a chain of tiny creatures, and "grabbing" the next tiny creature (or its craving) using the last element in the dangling chain.

So the end result is a long chain in this order:

  1. thumb
  2. blood drop
  3. bandaid
  4. mosquito
  5. arm
  6. spider
  7. web
  8. frog
  9. lilypad
  10. frenchie
  11. wine

You'll find that it may be difficult because some pesky (very cute) rocks are laying in the way (or are they helping?). If you ever shoot a target too fast, it may fly off the screen, and you'll have to restart the level!

If you see a flashy red spiky thing, BEWARE.

The game is played with the mouse, moving the mouse (thumb) around to "grab" the tiny creatures.

Keyboard shortcuts: "r" to restart the level, "esc" to go back to the main menu.

Love the concept, easy to pickup but definitely challenging especially in harcorde mdoe to the max in random level. The music and the mouth made sfx really made the experience hilarious. Congrats for your entry!

concept is cool, but it's too easy with selected targets ecpecially. random generation should have stricter rules and several options of chaining would be cool.

Great concept. I had some trouble when the rope would get long. though I think that's the point. Anyways, Great game!

@plusminus yes the random generation needed way more work! I thought about a solution, but the jam is over, I’ll probably wait for the ratings to get in (or publish on itch?).

Have you tried the ' nightmare level slider ' in the random levels ?

An almost perfect mini-game! The concept is really fun, and its length is just right, like a tiny short song.

@lunch wow thank you very much for such a nice praise, very happy that you enjoyed it.
Have you tried the random levels, and the "nightmare level" slider at the top-left of the screen?
The random levels need some work to properly lay out the creatures, so you may need to "reload" a few times.

An interesting take on the theme! I did spend a little more time than necessary on wondering why I couldnt just jab my finger and give it to the mosquito :D
I had a good time with this :)

@magopian Of course, I've tried it. I believe that if you brainstorm more and think beyond the current theme to explore additional interesting mechanics, it will definitely become a game worth buying twice!
p.s. sfx is so adorable, love it.

Very nice. Short and simple, a good combination for a game jam entry. I love sound effects after picking up things!

Very nice game, at first I didn't get it but once I got to the frenchman I realized where the difficulty lied. I had a blast with this and the sounds are very funny. I think there are some issues with the nightmare/random mode as sometimes it started refreshing continuously with new spawns.

@balimaarthebassfish wait, you didn't understand the (completely whack and goofy) logic that you have to PROTECT each and every "creature" before attracting the next one, so it doesn't gobble it up?
You (not so) OBVIOUSLY have to protect your blood drop with a bandaid, or the mosquito will eat it up, as you have to protect the mosquito with an arm so the spider doesn't eat it up, and you have to protect the spider with its web so the frog doesn't it eat up, and obviously you need the lilypad so the frenchie (who eats frogs legs, as one does) can't eat it...

Yeah, it's completely crazy, i realize that, but it kinda made sense in the beginning hahahah :D

@lunch wow that's very very nice of you! I plan on working some more on the game after the rankings are in, so as not to deceive the players in thinking i did more in the jam than I actually did (or maybe publish new versions on itch, and explain what was added?)

@sbeif yeah, the random levels needs way more work to make it consistently playable, and it gets even worse if you crank up the nightmare level... I'll fix that in the (near) future!

Excellent game here! I had a lot of fun with the sound design (oh la la! :smiley: ). I really like this type of fast-paced game, with no need for detailed explanations to understand the gameplay. It's all very effective. Bravooo!

Interesting idea! It took me a while to figure out what was going on, and the last level was the only one that felt somewhat challenging. I think something different for the chain links would've made better sense. Good job!

this game is so fun! and sound design makes everything 10 times funnier :)
i would love to have more levels, especially with a bigger map and trickier ways to solve. i also think that it could be fun to find out what the chain should be on your own :)
i tried to start random levels, but the for some reason the button did nothing for me :(

I liked the concept, the mood is well made, and the sounds were the best part of it, only complain is things appearing over the button on the top-right corner

This was fun! The sound effects were great, and the whole package was very cohesive! The only real feedback that I have is that it felt like the first few tutorial-style levels went on for a little bit too long, especially because they didn't really tutorialize the fun physics interactions that the later levels required. Once I got to those later levels, I had a blast trying to figure out how to fling my chain towards each item I needed to pick up, but in the beginning I had a completely different impression of the game, where I thought it was going to be more of a logic puzzle where I had to pick items up in the correct sequence.

My only other feedback is that I literally winced every time I had to start the level by pricking my finger on the thumbtack, but I think that might be a "me" problem - I am awful around blood, so this was some good immersion therapy lol

That was interesting to play, the sound effects were nice like the bright and clear art. What I do wonder is the reason to 'spoil' the answer so to speak in game with the squares. I had some struggle when the thing became long and the next was quite high in the screen. Adding the 'kill' was a good choice, it makes it more complete.

As a side note, the game version here on the website, not your itch, gives this:
"Failed to read the 'serviceWorker' property from 'Navigator': Service worker is disabled because the context is sandboxed and lacks the 'allow-same-origin' flag."

I liked the voices :) I wish there was a bit more of a challenge (e.g. player having to figure out and remember what matches with what instead of it being always selected, or at least the spiky thingy showing up on any level before the last one) but it's fine as it is now.

Speaking of the spiky thingy, I had some issues with the game not restarting after I got prickled by it (well, at least it's a short game so I just replayed it all over again 😅)

Really weird (in a good way) and somehow quite addicting game. First I didn't really understand what was the point as the first levels were really easy but later on it wasn't case anymore. Good job.

Bravo 🙏

Thanks @ecaterina @obidiix-minusinfinity @koolruz @lizz @spacecadet and @wendel-scardua for all your very nice feedbacks, and i'm definitely steeling, I mean, using your advices!
I plan on updating the game tomorrow and publishing the update on itch.io with a list of "post jam" fixes and improvements (if I manage to implement them ;)

Side note: sorry @koolruz for the wincing and "self inflicted pain" and "display of blood", I didn't think about that... I'll see if I can implement a "soft" version, not sure how yet. At the very least, it'll give me some food for thoughts for my future games, thanks for you feedback <3

thats some good idea to use physics as a gameplay element that does not frustrate you when something glitches around - as glitching is probably assisting!

Cute! Really interesting idea I haven’t seen before too! I’m out of the country right now so wasn’t able to play on a computer, but it plays surprisingly well on a phone too since it’s just mouse controls ^_^ the addition of the mustache and baguette on the guy is also top tier xD
