A music loop a little longer could be nice too. Love the concept of the buttery creature.
Good job!
..... BUTTER.
-Initially, I didn’t realize the bar at the top represented my health—I mistook it for a progress indicator showing how far I’d traveled from start to finish.
-It took me a moment to figure out what the sparkles were for, so maybe this would be a good opportunity to introduce a tip or tutorial.
-I love the wall sliding mechanic! Sliding down incline ramps would be a great addition, though I know that could be tricky to implement.
-The introduction of mechanics felt a bit slow. Having one level per mechanic made it feel like a while before getting to the wall sliding. It might be more engaging to introduce new mechanics faster.
Great job with the wall jump mechanics! Those are usually pretty tricky to pull off.
The surprise traversal shake-up near the end was a delight!
Side note, the music got annoying pretty quickly, so I ended up muting it.
Everything felt pretty solid here. Wall jumping is a bit iffy but I think this is user error rather than any kind of mechanical issue.
Jump lengths were tight in a few spots (The last one in Feel the Burn got me a few times...), I think a lot of it is just due to his very long hitbox, which is the nature of the butter here.
Game has some clear mechanical escalation and I good decision making on tutorialization and helping the player when they fail to solve the obvious puzzle you placed before them.
Nice work!
As a French person, I love the idea of playing a piece of butter ahah :)
The graphics are very pretty, as is the music (although I would have liked the loop to be longer, because I got bored listening to it, but that's really a detail).
In terms of gameplay elements, I didn't understand the effect of salt. Otherwise, all UI elements are very easy to understand (energy bar is perfect).
10/10 for the level design, progressive and challenging! The tutorials could do with a bit more visibility (change font size or type, or placement?).
All in all, your game is a great success. Bravo!
The only thing I'd change is the game progression, making it a bit steeper: no need (especially in a game jam) to have a lot of pretty simple levels at the beginning, I'd prefer to see earlier something more challenging and with the more "advanced" mechanics (like the wall jump), that otherwise people could miss by just playing the first levels.
The jumping sound felt maybe a bit too loud and intrusive. While BG music is gorgeous but much quieter.
Overall, a cute platformer idea, I liked it a lot <3
The graphics don't fit together very well in my opinion, there's the pixelated butter and obstacles, some of the background art is not pixelated, plus those lamps are quite distracting (I thought they act as walls multiple times).
There is a lot of content in this game, the fully working wall jump was cool but then I found the 'toast surfing' (?) levels, wow! Impressive!
