Lil' Chimeras by EyeofBholden

[raw]
made by EyeofBholden for Ludum Dare 56 (COMPO)

Chimera aboption is the new hype sweeping the nation. You will use whatever traits you have to build up potential interest from the queue of potential future owners. However you are not alone at the shop.

Fight to stand out more, but fear not, theres no shortage of future future homes. The trick is you dont know what they are looking for. Do they want something cute or fierce, rr can you just overload them with how durpy you are.

No matter, just be yourself and find your best match.

You will be given a random chimera, whose body parts effect the pool of cards you have to play. a random potential adoptee will be generated with target values for you and your friend to reach. Play to what you do better, or just power through and max out a stat and be unresistable.

Press N if you feel you're at a stalemate to take a nap to generate a new opponent. Press Q to quit.

Note: Needs to be ran fullscreen.

A lot of features and complexity had to be cut to meet deadline, but for my first compo I'm content.

I'm not really sure I know how to play... do I mainly look at the combinations of animals? I really liked making chimeras like that as a kid. They're cute!

Took me a while to understand what was going on but cool concept once I figured out that the goal is to "win" one of the four meters before the opponent does! With more time and more mechanics it could be very interesting.

As it stands though, I'm not sure there was any strategy to it? You have to play your whole hand before you get new cards so it doesn't matter what you play since you have to play everything anyways.

I also noticed a gamebreaking bug if you click too fast on the button - you can play the same card many times in a row. You can fix that if you have the time - fixing gamebreaking bugs is allowed even outside the allotted time! It will probably help other players as it's very easy to run into the problem and break the whole game.

Cute concept and animals! I liked pressing N over and over to see what combinations I could generate! Partial to the iguana with a fox tail personally, lizards would be much cuter if they came like that IRL! :)

Good work overall - shame you ran out of time on this one. Looking forward to your future entries now that you have some experience!

As has been said, the UI is pretty confusing (the "Be Adorable" text didn't really look like a button to me), and I didn't feel like I had any strategy. It's a very cool concept, but just a bit of polish on the user experience would do wonders!

@ember44 UX polish and the game design also needed deepening. I had a lot in the design doc I couldnt get too. Thank you for trying it out!

This is a cool idea. Had to go into the comments to work out how to play but it was pretty cool watching the bars go up!

I really like the 'chimera' creature generation. The creatures look very cool! Wasn't able to really play the game . Sometimes after I play a card, the opponent does nothing? And the game is stuck?

This is a super cute concept! I enjoyed seeing the different chimaeras, and rerolling until I found the perfect non-mixed up ones. The gameplay has a lot that could have been expanded on, for example a simple drafting mechanic where you can choose some of your hand to discard every time it refreshes. Very nice!

I don't like those really low res fonts for big text blocks, The copy text was a bit lengthy and this game has a lot of matte brown colors. The graphics look a bit "pillow shaded" if that makes sense. I don't like that I am seeing smooth interpolation of low resolution pixel art graphics.

The pixel art is pretty charming when it gets started and I was excited to get going because I like the general concept. I'm focusing mostly on the graphics and presentation because I wasn't able to place more than 1 card or do anything further than that on either build. I also found a bug that can grow/shrink the card when hovering it. Would love to hear some tunes as well, but that's neither here nor there.

Good effort, and keep up the good work. I think some more time in the saddle on drawing pixel art graphics would help your art out. I know I wouldn't fair any better, it's really tough haha.

This is a pretty promising first entry! Like others have mentioned some of the UI is confusing and the gameplay could be better fleshed out, but that's how it goes sometimes working solo (I had similar issues this compo lol). I think the idea here is really fun and a lot of the hard work with random chimeras and card playing are all solid, and that's impressive on its own. Great work!
