[raw]
made by JEMH2K for Ludum Dare 56 (COMPO)

relax...

left and right arrow to turn

space to shoot

Apologies to the folks having issues with the LudumDare embedded version of the game. I'd encourage you to play the itch.io version. To my knowledge there are no issues with this. I need to find out if I'm allowed to upload a patched version post-deadline.

love the music and the background art is genuinely beautiful. I wish I could see what my score was so I could go again and try and beat it :)

@diabolical-sloth glad you liked it ! If you go back to the main menu after dying, it should appear underneath the title :)

Nice game, the arrow rotated too slow, even when I got used to it and kept snatching everything up it was still frustrating, couldn't relax because of the arrow speed. I really liked catching prey on the tongues way back, maybe it would be worth to experiment with a hooked tongue (at least on the way back). The flies spawning on the sides felt unfair as they were way closer to the player and required more movement.

At first I was annoyed by how slow the aiming was, but I think it was an intentional choice to force you to think about where to aim, and it fits the relaxed mood. I got 135 points and I don't think I ever had a situation where I couldn't hit all the bugs because of the slow aiming speed.

I really love the art style and the use of the dithering effect! However, like someone else mentioned, the slow cursor didn’t feel quite right for me.

Fun little game. I really like the pixel art and I did not realize that there was music until I read a comment about it. It just fits very well. Nicely done!

Frog gang! :frog: I got really in the zone and ended up with a score of 160 on my first play through  The music was super zen and I liked the minimalist art style. The arrow was _almost_ too slow, but it reminded me of Dome Keeper a bit. Great job!

I love the little scroll down intro and the graphics. Sound and music work well. The slowness of the controls make it very unforgiving, I think speeding it up a little would of made it more enjoyable for me personally but appreciate it was likely a deliberate decision. Embedded version played fine for me. I liked catching the pesky drones Great job!

No, this is pretty straightforward, quite nice actually, even pretty relaxing. It took me a while to figure out why I kept dying. I hadn't noticed that the dragonflies release something to harm you. I particularly enjoyed the music and the soundscape.

The art is delicious. I simply must know how you made the dithering pixel art, the effect is amazing.

The intro is sublime! Lost in the clouds and hills forgot the game.
Complementary audio and sfx, all together is an extremely clean design!

As with others, the pointer felt a bit tight even though you do settle into it more as you play on.

I was curious what your game would be like :innocent: And I'm happily surprised!
Love your game! Its very relaxing. The opening I said out loud: "oh wouw, dat paralax though!" I thought that was epic ;p

I remember thinking: this game reminds me of paratrooper (that old DOS game from back in the day). And then the crickets(?) came along by with their projectiles

Really well done! Love the graphics. With little details like the eyes of the frog blinking asynchronously and the background music is a delight

I love this art and music, simple but very nostalgic.
Love this even more because it reminds me of gold miner, one of my favorite game from childhood. And the first complete game I ever made myself was also a gold miner tutorial!

Nice entry :)

I may not add anything new, here but I liked the graphics (the intro in particular does a great job at immersing you in the pond scenery!) and the music track. It was lulling, and didn't get repetitive at all as it tends to be the case sometimes in short games you can replay multiple times in a row.

Gameplay was simple, but well executed except for the tongue rotation speed, where I agree with other reviewers that it was a bit too slow. Given the speed of some of the bugs there were cases where it wasn't possible to arrive from the last one's position, and that felt unfair, running counter to the overall chill vibes. On the plus side, I appreciated the generous collision detection, so you could still grab some bugs without perfect accuracy.

A great example of what a good compo entry can achieve. Congrats!

PS: 62 points has been my highest score so far.

Relaxing indeed! :) The music really helps to set the mood, if it was with a higher bpm and different instrument, this game could be super stressful without changing the gameplay at all, this shows how important setting the tone is!

I didn't have any issue with the embedded version on this ld page, in case you wonder if it is still an issue.

Great job for a compo! I was impressed by the sliding background at the beginning of the game.

Super cozy pixel art and music! I really enjoyed playing. My tongue stopped working when I got hit though, I'm not sure why! So here's my score with 1 life xD
