Koi by A Priori

[raw]
made by A Priori for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Direct and grow your swarm of procedurally animated Boids-like fish :fish: while eating food and weaving around predators. It starts frantic - you might only escape by the skin (scales*) of your teeth - but once you get into the rhythm of things, you can be immersed in a trance-like flow state.

The whole number part of your score is how many fish you gained in total (how many times the bar at the top of the screen empties out)

The fractional part of your score is how close you were to gaining another fish. Each round requires one more food than the last.

Fantastic game, love the use of procedural animation and very fun to play! The art is incredibly cohesive. The game could be improved a lot if the gameplay had slightly more depth and variability. It'd be nice to see your score while you play so you can get an idea of how good you're doing

Really nice! The music is relaxing, though the gameplay is actually quite stressful :P The fish move in a satisfying manner, and I like the addition of a control to scatter the fish. (Though it seems like every time I use it all my fish get eaten on the way back, lol)

Very nicely done way of doing 'boids' as fish. It's visually pleasing and the music adds a lot to the experience.

I think the percentage points is a little hard to read in the score, but I figured out the meaning after a bit.

Nice jam!

Nice one! Has an overall nice gamefeel. It was fun to get the hang of the slippery controls and the disbanding mechanic. The changing of colors between each run is also a nice touch. here's my high-score :^)

I absolutely love the change in colors between each run - part of me wishes it would change slowly over the course of a run?

Gorgeous game!

08. Oct 2024 · 22:06 UTC
@mal I did consider having the colours change slowly over time, but by that point in the codebase each fish pulled it's colours from the palette and saved them itself so I'd have to redo a lot of work. Maybe in a post-jam version I'll try it another way. Thanks for playing!

This game rules! I can think of a lot of things I want added, which is a really good sign :). Top of my list would be a peaceful mode because those green fish are so mean and it makes me sad when they eat my koi. The changing color scheme is a great addition to make replays feel fresh.

Feels great, the music is perfect, and I even love the logo! Great entry.

Tab did not go to full-screen for me. I'm on Windows 11 with an ultrawide monitor.

@madbarron Thanks for playing and for your feedback; I'll also add you to the leaderboard in a moment! I'm curious what happened when you tried to fullscreen? I think it probably does have to do with your ultrawide monitor, though I would've expected the game to just ruin the visuals by stretching the graphics really wide, or did it just stay windowed or something else?

Lovely relaxing game! The movement is super satisfying, the overall vibe is amazing, only one complaint: the white noise, i get that you were going for sea sound, but it actually make it difficult to listen properly and at higher volume to the AMAZING soundtrack!

I wasn't very good, and I panicked most of the time. I like the koi though. -u- I wish there was a real "zen" mode.

I love this :D Amazingly smooth movement, really satisfying, with great fish animation. Really nailed that movement :) Nice music too and art style overall. I could see this being a fun multiplayer thing where one plays as the hunter and the other one as pray and just having to outmaneuver the other. Good job :)

Wow, what a fun little game. Enjoyed the procedural animation (I love how I know exactly what method you used) and the boids combined into a fun flow game of basically boids snake. Fantastic idea and I loved the changing color.

I think I did pretty decently right?

I really like the color randomization and the clever implementation of the flocking algorithm. The audio adds a lot to the immersion, and the game loop is also great. I don't have anything negative to say, well done!

I think I'm satisfied with my (future) placement on the leaderboard (for now)

![koi.png](///raw/bdb/1/z/687a5.png)

I need to stop playing for now because it is addicting 😅 Not only the game itself is good, but it's very quick to do "just one more" attempt... But alas I still need to play and rate more entries.

PS: I love that the logo shows the koi reaching for the food :)

It interesting and looks good, at first it seemed too easy, but then other fish gets introduced, I liked the one who goes for the food and gets longer. It is a bit too fast in my opinion to be able to properly steer and evade the other fish, and the fact that they can often be out of the map doesn't help.

Simple but addictive! The music is really well done, and I love the ambient ocean track and I can very clearly tell that's what you were going for.

The movement of the school of fish feels incredibly intuitive and natural and the difficulty curves up nicely. It took a bit of getting used to how the fish pushing worked but once I did it was extremely satisfying to use it to nab a bit of food or narrowly escape the predators. The only real complaint I have is it can be kind of hard to keep track of things if the fish go off screen but that's an extremely minor point.

All around a very solid entry, and a massive accomplishment that its your first!

Obligatory score pic:

I love the fish, it's such a beautiful game. I wonder what it would feel like if it were slowed down a little bit. Either way it was fun to dodge the other fish and catch pellet's to grow my school.
