Catacombs by Soul Grinder

[raw]
made by Soul Grinder for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Find your way around the haunted maze-like catacombs to collect all the mice to win the game and try to survive the ghosts and fireball traps. I usually use GDevelop for game jams but wanted try creating a Unity game for this one. So this is my first Unity game jam and took the 72hr challenge. Hope you enjoy it and good luck to your games too.

very good for the first experience, and even more so for a solo jam, I liked the splash screens in the beginning and in the game over, you managed to capture the cool mood of the early 3D games.

Love the vibe of the game, it reminds me of some older miniclip games. Good job!

Loved it when the mouse ran away from me into a hole in the wall. Cool game!

Ghosts are scary. I had fun running around and chasing these pests. The game is moody!

For your first Unity game in such a short time, you should be proud!
I think the main issues I have with it gameplay wise is that having to catch that many mice doesn't feel very warranted or rewarding. A few to begin off was fine, but 40+ for level 2 is really crazy!
Also, just general mouse (computer mouse!) sensitivity feeling pretty low.

I did like how you added little mouse holes and the traps! Good job on this.

@nikkunakku Thanks for feedback, it's not my first Unity game, I've made about 4 or 5, it's the first time I used Unity for a game jam though. Much more of a challenge than GDevelop lol. I was originally going to have a basic skill tree with many different tiny creatures to catch, but quickly ran out of time and had to keep the scope down to be able to finish it. The sensitivity has been more than fine on my mouse, but didn't think of the lower DPI users. There's probably some way I could change that with C# script, but it never crossed my mind to be honest, will consider that in future jams though thank you.

@soul-grinder Oh yea, definitely I understand that. The concerns of scope during jams, sigh... Good luck with your future games and jams!

Really play vomit, let my brain dizzy, if the frame rate can be higher, it is good, the game design makes people have a desire to explore the map

45 mices to catch? hahaha I did not have the endurance, especially not while being chased by ghosts and fireballs. Great job, this is a solid first game.

Really loved the game over screen  Well done with the mood and atmosphere, and I enjoyed the music. Any specific reason we are hunting mice? Are we the dungeon pest controll

@winter2277 Thanks, yeh 45 might of been a bit much, I should of had it at about 12 or 20 at the most thinking about it. It increases with difficulty each time you level up by adding an extra ghost spawn. I would of liked to have included more variety in enemies and mechanics but ran out of time and had to scope down.

@glassar Thanks haha, well the mice need hunting so they don't destroy the coffins and the dead can rest in peace. Also, the mice are the tiny creatures part of the theme

It seemed to me that the game was asking too much and I would have singled out a separate track when we are haunted, but otherwise the game is very nice and high-quality by the standards of others. Nice try, good luck with future projects.

I'm officially the worst mouse catcher :). It is a really solid base for a game and impressive that you managed to much!

The visual storytelling is as strong as the narrative, and the theme is masterfully handled. Good Job!

Once you memorize the maze, it becomes much easier to play. It's a good thing that you can get away from the ghost when it suddenly flies out from around the corner straight at you, rather than immediately dealing damage.

I had a lot of fun with this game! The idea of catching mice is absurd in the best way, and the ghost fear mechanic adds a nice touch of tension.

However, the music was a bit loud, and volume sliders would help. Catching mice was tricky—felt like the collider was too small. The door placement was a bit awkward too.

It would also be nice to find health items or ways to fight the ghosts. Despite these small issues, the game’s creativity really shines!
