Rat Dead Redemption by GreenPig

[raw]
made by GreenPig for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Rat Dead Redemption plunges you into the gritty underworld of the city sewers, where survival is a game of wits, strategy, and strength. You play as a cunning rat, scavenging through the filth for valuable collectables and hidden treasures to build your reputation. But you're not alone in this underground world—other rats lurk in the shadows, some to befriend, others to fight. Recruit your own ragtag team of rodents, battle rival rat gangs, and conquer the sewers one tunnel at a time. Will you rise to the top of the rat kingdom, or fall prey to the chaos below?

Controls: We opted for easier controls taking last year's reviews into account.

Left click/drag - select Right click - move

Fighting is automatic.

Isn't it nice to have such easy controls and that you don't have to binge through 5 pages of controls? :) Please enjoy our game very much.

A bit about ourselves: we have been friends since primary school and for the last four years we participated in every autumn Ludum dare together. This has been more difficult in the previous two years as we both went to universities in different countries neither of which is our home country. Still, we managed it and hope to continue this beautiful tradition that Ludum Dare has become for us. Ludum Dare gave us so much and we are eternally grateful for this game jam and every participant in it:)Cover.pngpost2.png

I really enjoyed the sound design and visuals, though I found the combat to be somewhat confusing. Should I be running past the rats or actually trying to fight each one I come across? :) Either way, great effort, and again gj on the atmosphere!

Cool concept and nice visuals. Maybe it is an issue with the browser version, but the movement controls don't seem to respond half the time.

It has a good atmosphere and sound. But the control is hard, as it requires accuracy from the player

Nice visuals, and a great feeling of getting lost in the sewers which contributes to the atmosphere. Controls can be a little irresponsive sometimes, but maybe it's only the browser version. Nice work!

fun experience, sometimes the rat would have the zoomies and become really fast

Graphics are really nice, controls felt stiff and sometimes got stuck and couldnt really move properly. Movement speed also seemed a little fast for a rat but nice game overall

Is it just me or is the world randomly generated?

In any regards, quite well done. Controls seems a bit clunky on WebGL.

the sound and graphic made up a nice sewer vibe, right click in browser is painful though

Love the vibe created by audio and visual effects -- even the camera angle made it feel like a dungeon crawling experience. Amassing an army of rats was addicting and satisfying, but it would be cool to get a bit more feedback during combat. Maybe adding rare rats with different stats/abilities could help incentivize exploration more too!

Nice work. The rats look very nice! Survival in the sewers sets up mood pretty well. I feel like your run can be ruined in a moment when a bigger group or several groups come to you right away, but I guess that's part of the game. Nice work :)

@xparker yes it is, we spent like a whole day making the algorithm for it. I feel like you are the only person who realized this :D

@renier weird, we haven't even encountered that bug but thank you for pointing it out were definitely gonna have a look at it as we are refactoring the whole thing now haha.

@jack-sims thank you thank you, I made the first piece of music (without the talking) and then we agreed that we were gonna go for a more unsettling mood but we still wanted to use it so we settled on this, glad you liked it:))

I like the look and mood a lot, is there an objective I'm supposed to find in the tunnels?

Rat Dead Redemption sounds incredible! The sewer world, battling rival rat gangs, and simple controls make it super fun and easy to jump into. The auto-fighting feature is a great touch, and the strategic rat team-building adds depth. It's clear that a lot of passion went into this game!

A suggestion: add more about how the "reputation" affects gameplay to make players even more excited about the strategy.
