Ubuq by cubotrox_toni

[raw]
made by cubotrox_toni for LD36 (JAM)
“Ubuq” is a 2D action video game, at which the music is the main driver for the combat system, similar to Guitar Hero style, and it has few components of Shoot’Em Up and RPG.

The ancient civilization of Ubuq already used advanced technology from 6.000 years ago, and nowadays they evolved until dominate the world. In order to try change that situation, the rebel group Glitch has sent a time traveler to the past. His name is Swap and he uses a timeless music machine, by which he can control the sounds of the future in order to neutralize the ancient technology and so disassemble the Ubuq civilization.

Instructions (xbox gamepad / keyboard):
* Left Stick / Space Bar = Move
* Left Trigger / Space = Prepare Attack
* Buttons A,B,X,Y / Keys 1,2,3,4 = Launch Attack

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! Simple mechanics that still offered a decent amount of challenge. We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description. (you can already find several games from the jam there)

Great game! Love the concept, it's a nice mix of action/evade and button smashing :D
Really hope to see more work over it :)
'Precharging' 1 or 2 chords the weapon maybe could give it more dynamism.
PD: You can skip this comment as I know it's a rush work in so little time, but to say something 'constructive' (I hope), consider closing the border of the map! And maybe adding some level finished/restart/menu if you clear everything! :D

Game's quite hard, but fun to play. I like the idea of combining movement and rhythm-building the attack a lot. Art and music are very nice too.

The game is challenging and fun! I love the art style, and the attacking mechanism is very neat! Love the music concept also.

This game can easily become a real game, keep working on it! Nice job!

Nice game with an innovative mechanic!
It could use some balancing, regenerating health, or different types of attacks with different styles of button sequences.
But still, very impressive!

Great art, I love the trees especially, character design is cool. I like the music. The gameplay is pretty interesting way to attack but with the number of enemies the game is very hard and feels unfair sometimes, especially because ever hit cancels your attack. I think it's harder to use keyboard than controller. I also don't understand what coins do.

I would recommend each time you successfully press a button the rhythm gets faster, and also maybe make a the margin of error bigger at the beginning of the attack and make it less after you land more attacks.

Hey! That was a fun game - nice work syncing the sounds / attack / music pretty seamlessly. The art style was nice but I spent too much time concentrating on the buttons to really appreciate it. Fun game though - blood explosions always good.

@Digitaldude555, hahaha, coins are the same than real life: they are useless ;)

I like the concept and the art and music feels good, but the gameplay is hard as hell xD. Also not a fan of the quick time events, but is a very well thought game!

It's a cool idea, and it looks really nice.

But the gameplay is pretty badly thought out; the enemies are shooting at me, rather quickly, but each time I want to shoot at them I have do a quick time event, while trying to move out of the way of the bullets. And it never actually shot, it just made a power up noise :/

@alittleredpanda thanks for the feedback. You're right. We would like have got more time to polish the gameplay mechanic. The characters and bullets are too big, so it's very hard to avoid them. About the shots, the main character does not shot anything. Each time you match right a button, all enemies inside the effect area are damaged. The longer you match the button string, the more damage is accumulted.

Very nice combination of gameplay mechanics! Pretty much unique experience. Of course it needs some polish and some kind of tutorial, but yeah, it's gamejam, we don't have time for it. Great job!

I really really really like where you're going with this. The mechanic is super interesting, and could totally lend itself well to an RPG type game. You could totally make a full final fantasy or zelda style RPG based around this mechanic, and it would be awesome. Reminds me a lot of Seqeuence or Before the Echo.

Would be really interesting to have some sort of spellbook as well. Could maybe select an ability somehow, and then play the correct musical sequence to activate it. Or maybe you just start playing, where each of the buttons is a note, and different musical sequences create different effects.

Just spitballing, but you guys are onto something really unique and interesting here.

The battle system is very interesting.
There is a lack of visual feedback when the player attack.
More sounds and animation could make it really cool. Great job though.

I have tried to play it on keyboard i managed to move one enemy into tree so he couldn't shoot me and then i had to clik space few times to see some keys that i press to kill that one enemy.
Unfortunately those keys don't appear every time i press space sometimes that appear to imidiatley disappear i suppose they move around but i dont know what and when to press you probably should check more keyboard controls.
Saying that i couldnt go to far so i only saw begging. graphics look good but music is very repetitive i feel like those loop drum series makes that.
