The Curse of PentaCastle by Lila Pause

[raw]
made by Lila Pause for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Embark on a mystical journey like no other in this fusion of deckbuilder, dungeon crawler, and platformer, crafted for Ludum Dare 55. You wield powerful spells, but only through intricate rituals. To cast your magic and navigate the treacherous depths of Pantacastle, you must master the art of drawing the correct lines within the devil's pentagram.

Controls

  • WASD/Arrow Keys/Space to move around
  • E to pick up chests (spells)
  • Hold click to draw pentagram (release to submit)

Gameplay

  • The red bar on the left top corner indicates your HP (0 HP = death)
  • You can pick up a chest to get a new spell in your inventory (also left top corner)
  • If you hover over a spell you can see its description and cast combination
  • Hold click and draw the spell combination to cast the spell
  • If you kill every enemy and pick up all spells you can enter the portal to the next room
  • If you enter a new room or kill enemies, you get some HP back
  • The more rooms you pass the higher the chance for more powerful spells
  • You get about 100 points for entering a portal and 10 points for killing an enemy
  • The goal is to reach as many points as possible

Great work! Challenging to get a good at, but its fun figuring the game out. The drawing mechanic is neat and I love the variety of spells. Character velocity can be limiting in some of the level areas even with a speed boost, but really neat idea

Nice, I find the Pentagram-drawing-tool is really innovative. Something about the controls was a bit "off", maybe the movement was just a tad too slow.

I got an error initially, but after reloading the web version it went away. Fun game, nice drawing mechanic.

It took me a moment to understand the pentagram summoning mechanic, but once I got it, I got it. Its certainly tricky to cast spells quickly, maybe have some game slowdown happening while you are casting? You made a great game, and it is very well polished! good job

The pentagram snap was a little off from time to time. I would also suggest adding more x velocity to your player.
Fun idea overall, cool spells :)

Great game! My only complaint would be I wish the Pentagram codes you hover over in the top left corner were a little bigger. I played multiple games and had a blast though. I couldn't get pass level 2 though, no matter how hard I tried. I'm just bad, I guess! lol

Ah, another gesture game, I'm enjoying this LD so much!

Your idea is pretty fresh! I think all the platforming and jumping is perhaps a little distracting because I certainly want to spend more time experimenting with spells than fighting the platforming. I like the thrill of getting a new spell and trying it out for the first time. Plus the fact that you can pre-draw a symbol and then run to a position and release it there to cast the spell.

Overall, this is very cool, thanks for the entry!

Unique entry, Liked the art style! One thing that was getting in my way was the drawing area appearing outside the game window, which I had to adjust mid-way of a fight. Great entry overall!

Really had a ton of fun you should be proud! Game play was really enjoyable, with a few polishes here and there it would be steam ready!

I got an error in the beginning and a lot of freezes in web version, but after reloading the web it was better, but still sometimes there were some freezes. Game is interesting, but in the beginning i didn't clearly understand what i should do and how, but after i understand it was quite good, i really enjoy drawing mechanics. Also graphics is super nice, great job!

It's a little hard to get your head around to begin with and the movement feels a bit tricky at times. Generally though it's a fun idea and the spellcasting is excellent once you start to get to grips with it - having to draw in real time adds a great edge to the challenge.

I liked the pixel art style and character design. Parallax effect is a nice touch. Variety of enemies is admirable. The spellcasting mechanic is quite enjoyable and satisfying. There are some minor issues (which are acceptable for a jam game) I encountered. The pentagram goes out of screen when the cursor is close to the corners. Platforming is sometimes challenging (which is prominent in level 3) and may need some adjustment to colliders. Excellent job!
