About the game

gameplay.gif

For a thousand years Koshchei "the Immortal" committed dark deeds. This began to annoy the people, and they started to protest against the evil things that Koshchei was doing, yet no one opposed him.

And the people learned that Koshchei could be defeated by breaking the tip of the needle that is in the egg, and the egg is in a duck, and the duck is in a hare, and the hare is in a chest, and the chest is on an oak, and the oak is on the island of Buyan.

And the people began to annoy Koshchei, some with pitchforks, some with sticks. They go around here poking the oak, trampling the island of Buyan. Very persistent!

Damn it! We need to get rid of these annoying scoundrels with pitchforks!

Rules

Every day you have new magical passes to summon hellish entities, but don’t relax — every day more and more peasants arrive on ships to the island to stick their pitchforks into your oak!

You have only a few days to wait for the help of your friends — then the peasants will leave your oak alone forever. But it is not exactly!

Enjoyable way of summoning, almost helldivers esc when it becomes frantic and you're trying to put in the correct patterns. Loved the art style as well.

Nice concept.
The best strategy is a little too much just spamming invocations in your base.
I would have love to use more powers or feel the need to explore the island.
Sometimes the invocation panel is not clickable for no reason, this is a little frustrating.
Overall, the game works and is enjoyable.

Very nice tower defense game with an interesting summoning mechanic. So cool that your game has a progression and so many creatures to summon. Art style is bright and attractive.

I unlocked demons and then played another few days, but nothing more unlocked. So I thought this is the end) Let me know if it is not. Maybe I missed something.

I guess the best tactic to survive is just run around the tree and summon creatures non stop =) It would be cool to have a little more balance, but I understand how hard it is to calculate and customize balance in such a short time.

Anyway, it's a very cool game. Congratulations on the completion of the jam!

Good looking and nice gameplay.

Sometime it is hard to grab the line start… I don't think the complexity of drawing with the mouse was the core gameplay. I finish by only focus on drawing as fast as I can.

And my creatures end stucked in the oak roots…
Some diversity in spell (more based on position) could enforce the tower defense like feeling.

Anyway, I enjoyed playing it.

I thought the game was going to be easy, but I was quickly proven wrong :) Still, I kinda feel like spamming a ton of smaller things can sometimes be better than summoning something big. It's hard to keep up of course, but they're cheap and can be in a lot of places at once, which does help.

Bouncy wolf is my spirit animal.

Quite a solid submission, it's really fun to play and has a good mechanics. It has decent balance. However, the lack of sounds and clear feedback on some important actions and events makes it hard to play and control the situation. Anyway, great job and congratulation with the submission.

Very good looking, great sound too. The gameplay starts off a bit too easy for me, I was able to spam wolves constantly in the early levels and never once felt like I was in danger at all. Maybe just a bit of tweaking needed there but otherwise it's cool!

It was hard to tell how well I was doing. Got bored after day 3 because I was just repeatedly surrounding the tree with hands and then summoning the most powerful creature as frequently as I could. Never felt any jeopardy or strategy aspect. That said, lovely graphics, liked the inovative interface, as a way of splitting player attention between moving and summoning.

Hey, cool entry! I loved the art - really consistent aesthetic and lovely little animations. It's great you guys managed to get a bit of a difficulty curve in there to make for a play experience that built up slowly - was exciting seeing what new summon I was going to get next! Gameplay felt nicely balanced and built up in difficulty at a healthy rate.

The OST was great - I loved the menu theme in particular. One of the great tragedies of making music for game jams is lovingly crafting a menu theme that the average player will spend about 10 seconds listening to - but I let it loop and I loved it :') I loved the combination of classical sounds and electronic percussion throughout - good stuff @wandering-composer !

Some constructive criticism -
* A few more SFX would have been great (just some combat sounds etc, a couple of hits)
* I admit when I booted it up I didn't actually know what to do at first - didn't notice the (admittedly obvious) summoning menu popout until I closed the game and looked at the GIF there. Probably my fault
* Would love to see even more variation in the summons - I liked that the first one was stationary, which made it appealing to use as a counterpoint with my other ones. Other than that (as far as I got) it seemed just about mana vs power after that - so some more specific behaviours would be amazing!

Well done guys, super solid entry.

That's a fun summon mechanic! It reminds me of casting spells in black & white! That's actually what I tried to do for a bit before I realize the gems had a hitbox to go through. I did have some collision issues with them a bit, but once I got used to that I was spawning all the monsters! Fun entry with some great art!

The game's graphics are pleasant and high-quality, in keeping with the atmosphere. There is a minimum difficulty level, but it gives you time to get the hang of the game. Mainly the summoning system, but once you get the hang of it, it's fine. I find it well balanced, just that some of my allies summoned too close to a tree, rock or other, get stuck.

I love the number of glyph-related games in this jam! This is a nice take on the theme, although it feels too indirect: nothing I do seems to affect the world in a meaningful way or present me with interesting decisions. I mostly just spam the spells and eventually die because they don't do what I want them to.

(But maybe I was just bad at it!)

The art is pretty nice, the groots attacking enemies with laser eyes is an unexpected touch, and of course the glyph drawing mechanic is nice, woul be even nicer after some UI polish to increase responsiveness.

Great job!

I managed to save the oak from pitchfork on the second try! It was fun and engaging, constant action! But the way I did it shows there is some issue with the balance. I found out, that just spamming wolves and walking around the tree is the easiest way to win with no damage to the oak itself. On first try I tried to summon more expensive creatures, and while they seem powerful, the mana cost is too great and because they are bigger, they seem to get stuck more often (especially next to the oak), while many wolves can quickly cover whole area and eliminate enemies before they will even show up.

Ideally there would be different types of enemies that are weak against one type of summons, and strong against other, so you don't do what I did, but of course I realize that is another heavy load of work for 72h jam.

Rune/Glyph drawing was very fun, despite me repeating one spell over and over.

Overall very enjoyable submission. If you plan on finishing it up, is there a way to "follow" you somewhere?

Such a cute game! The style reminds me of those mobile games like candy crush (in a good way) and I can see this becoming something like that at some point! I'ts a shame you ran out of time to implement all the concepts I saw you posted a while ago. But I hope you continue working on the game after the Jam :)
Absolutely love the concept you went for (are you all slavic or is there another reason you picked slavic mythology?) and the drawings are super cute and well made!
The game is too easy I admit, needed some better balancing, and I couldn't develop a strategy because it felt like anything I did was fine, so yea some more "punishing" mechanics would be cool. I like that you get mana back from killing enemies, it's a nice reward.
At some point some pits of hands started walking, and I think some units got stuck in the tree because they stopped moving. It's kind of a shame that the units seem to spawn in a random direction, I'd preffer if they spawned directly on top of Koschei, or maybe in the direction he's facing so you could get more control of them.
Other than that it's a great entry! Congratulations to all of you ^^

Really nice entry! The graphics were almost too pretty to believe it's a jam game! As others have wrote, some minor tuning of the mechanics might be nice; now I felt like I could stand in front of the tree and just spam the summon commands as fast as I could — but this definitely got harder later in the game, as I ran out of mana and had to think about where to summon my defenders more closely.

Anyway, great effort!

Finally I got to play this one, too. Nice nice nice. :D
I love those "bad" faces, the entire vibe. And the game is beautiful. xD And the theme is obviously **spot on** (with the summoning element in place). About the song... I feel the intro was in some actual song I liked XD .. very relaxing.

On the feedback part, yep, the game is not much of a challenge, as others mentioned above. Sometimes, just sometimes, I'd loved to see more of the screen at once, but that's about it. Since the experience is similar to mine (in its core concept), I would say that what feedback people gave for my one would also apply to this one / maybe a fast-forward would make the action more... action-y (when there is still time left until day end). While the summoning element is very relevant to the theme, it also gets tedious eventually (to use it for new guys). Apart from these, quite.. quite polished experience : )) Good job!
