Hades' Haunted Corn Maze is the first project undertaken by Dawn Studios. In this game you play as Hades, ousted from his job as god of the Underworld and cursed to remain in the mortal realm. Hades' Haunted Corn Maze is a tower defense game with a twist, you must solve mini text puzzles to complete a summoning ritual to summon your defenses.

Gameplay

The player plays as Hades and manages the Haunted Corn Maze. Hades will start the game with no Souls, and a full Bank. He can summon various Monsters using his Summoning Scroll. As mortals enter the Haunted Corn Maze, they must be stopped by Hades' Monsters from completing the Haunted Corn Maze. Each Monster will have abilities with different effects and ranges to kill the mortals. Killing a Human adds one Soul to Hades' Soul Jar. If a Human makes it through the maze, $X (the survival reward) will be deducted from Hades' Bank account (think of it as a health bar). If enough mortals make it through the maze to reduce Hades' bank account to $0, the level will be over and Hades will be bankrupt. If Hades is able to stop all the mortals and still have money leftover, the player wins the level.

Summoning

Hades can choose from an array of Monsters to summon, each one costing a different number of Souls to summon. After selecting a Monster to summon in the UI, the player will then select a destination for the Monster on the map, then the player will have to perform a summoning mini game. The mini game will consist of potentially randomized text based mini games, where the player must recite (type on their keyboard) some text from the Summoning scroll for that Monster. Once the player completes the mini game, the Monster will be summoned at the destination set earlier. There may be a cap on the number of summons allowed for a Monster.

Summoning Example:

To summon a Minotaur Monster, the player will select the Minotaur's icon, and then select a destination for the Minotaur, then the Summoning Scroll will change to display Ritual Text. The Ritual Text must be recited (typed on the keyboard) by the player in the input box on the scroll. The Minotaur's Ritual Text could state: "Up Up Left" or "ruatoniM" (Minotaur backwards), there will be many different mini games. Hades will recite that Ritual Text, if done correctly the book will flash green and the Monster will be Summoned at the chosen location. If done incorrectly, the book will flash red and Hades can try again, or cancel the summon and choose something else.

This looks really great, but I can't get any people to come into the maze

The game is fun, it seemed strange to have to put the exclamation point, especially when I was in a hurry, but in general I liked it.

Pretty fun! I am a slow typer, so even on easy I could only get to about day 4 haha. I love the music, it fits the game well.

Thanks @cozary, there is some leniency with the symbols like "!", if they are not added to the summon it will still work.

The concept is cool scaring people that are going trough the maze is fun I like the art for Hades. I think the pace of this game is a little slow however that might just be because I am a slow typer. (also the fact that you did a tutorial video is cool:)

I wish the enemies didn't run so fast, even on easy mode. I really enjoy the artwork and music. The sound effects are a bit uneven, but it's definitely better than no sound effects at all. Cheers. :)

Mavis Beacon trained me for this very moment. Unique and original concept and challenging even on the easiest difficulty.

Did see a few small bugs where when restarting the game the cash meter at the top didn't reset and I believe there was once it left me off on the day I had lost on previously.

Really like that you found the time to do a video tutorial. Definitely helped me understand how the different creatures worked without having to just trial and error it.

Keep up the good work!

It is a very unusual and atmospheric game, the visual is quite interesting, it looks stylish and funny! Good luck with your project, I would have played it more than once!!!

The concept is very creative, and I like the depiction of Hades as a smoking, Hawaiian shirt-wearing, weirdo running a haunted corn maze. Thank you for playing our game on stream btw :^)

Very creative idea and charismatic hero. A little sad that I don't have time to cast the spell before all the people pass, but that takes tactics. Especially liked the design of the game page :D

I found it hard to read the font for the summoning.

I was surprised by the summoning mechanic, you actually have to summon them by typing words!! That concept is so cool, it added a small stress to actually type right.
Also like others said, it was a bit hard to read the font at times, but it wasn't a big deal
Overall great entry and awesome concept, gg

This was fun! Unfortunately I'm not nearly fast enough at typing to get much past day four. I played on medium difficulty though, so I'm sure that didn't help. I really liked the idea for all the different monsters you could summon, but I really feel like I only ever had to summon spirits at choke points at the very beginning and end. The Minotaur was super useful and rewarding to use. The harpy was definitely interesting, but I don't feel like the patrons were slowed enough by it for me to catch up, but maybe that's just me.

Overall this is really well put together! I love it! And Hades genuinely looks fantastic. I wasn't prepared to do typing of the dead when I jumped into this, but it was really entertaining and had me on my toes a bit trying to type fast enough to not lose all my money.

Huh it's a great idea for the theme to combine with tower defense. I'm geniuenly impressed! I've found myself just stacking a lot of ghosts at the end of the level but in a jam those strats are hard to id

I liked the concept of summoning, and the originality of the art style, the game lacks a bit of final polish, the music is absurdly quirky and attractive in its own way, but I realize that in 72 hours it is extremely difficult to do so

Cool game. Having to type out the words to summon the creatures adds some nice challenge. The towers were unique and interesting. A few more would've been great but understandable given the time constraints. I love the design and voice of hades. Overall a solid entry.

Love a good "tower defense" game! It was definitely quiet challenging, I couldn't make it past easy. The Harpy's ability didn't seem to do much, so I basically only used minotaurs

@rumiaobsessed the font has been updated.

@aivaxela the harpy has been buffed, seems to be just about the right amount of effective now.

I can't type well so my error rate is too high and I can't make it past day 5 on easy, but that was super fun!

If you wanted to have an extra difficulty knob to twist: Instead of using just regex to check the answers, you could allow for different comparators and use a case-insensitive levenshtein distance comparison for phrase cases that's based on chosen difficulty. (i.e. allow for more leniency on easy vs. medium vs. hard just by changing a number.)

(Also, I literally LOL'd when I saw "me" as an acceptable answer for 'Who is the god of the underworld?' LOL)

Awesome game, I like everything (the music is dope!) except one thing: the typing ^^
If there would be just simple "click & summon" and you would have spent the time it took to implement the typing feature on something else... this would be a 5/5 game! Nice one, cheers! :)

main character looks and sounds awesome! Good bit of humor as well. Original combination of mechanics: typing and tower defense. The actual monster mechanics could've been a bit more creative too keep the game more varied/interesting perhaps!

pretty fun overall! It took a few tries to figure out that capitalization and punctuation wasn't necessary but once I did I was thrown straight back into typing games from highschool

I enjoy this as a typing game but would greatly prefer if I was able to play entirely using the keyboard. This way I could be much quicker deploying and staying in the zone. I think having to switch between keyboard and mouse is a significant downside for me. Matched the theme well and cool music!
