Walking The Pig by Frank Gevaerts

[raw]
made by Frank Gevaerts for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

Walking The Pig is a text adventure written in Inform 7.

It’s playable on the web.

There is no graphics or audio in this game, so I opted out of those categories.

If you have never played a game like this before, you basically type what you want to do and the game responds. What you need for this particular game:

  • Looking at things, e.g. “look at rope” or “examine rope”, or the usual short form “x rope”.
  • Look at everything, including yourself! “look at self” or “look at me”.
  • Picking things up. “take rope” or “get rope”.
  • Dropping things. “drop rope”.
  • Moving around. “go north”, “go west”, “go south”, “go east”, or their short forms “n”, “w”, “s”, “e”
  • Leashing animals. ”leash horse".

Many other verbs work too. (there are no ropes or horses in this game)

Look at everything, including yourself!

(There is a link to a transcript below if you can't figure it out. In that transcript only necessary steps are taken though, there is more to look at)

A silly, but charming text rpg game, one that I also managed to win, I liked it!

SO CUTE! I love text-based games and you knocked it out of the park! The humour is on-point (the shoehorn joke hit just right) and it was fun to explore and see what would happen. I'm tempted to try it a few times and try different choice orders to see how it would play out. Great entry!

*** The pig is tired after its walk and happy to be back in the pigsty. You have done your task! ***

Cool little entry as usual, Frank! :) I don’t usually play games like this, my first time was with your last LD entry. I missed Alpha Wolf Phil and Future Phil, but I was glad that there were some references. :D Nevertheless it was an immersive experience, I should read more books! :D Keep it up!

This was very cute. I appreciated the shoehorn. Here's my playthrough if you want to watch me struggle with reading comprehension.

Thanks for playing, everyone!

@stmate03 silly was a design goal :) I had some ideas involving "Space Ltd" and then while I was trying to get to sleep I thought about taking a pig for a walk and that seemed a lot more fun!

@cat-lab I'm not sure there's a lot of replay value, but feel free to try! I've had a shoehorn in several of my LD games so at this point it's as much a reference as a gimmick to claim I followed the theme.

@tudvari I can't teleport Phil into my games every time! :)

@bangkerpow yes, there's some things in there that make me want to try some other style of game at some point. I don't really do these enough to know how to help new players and I keep forgetting what people struggle with... ||You got lucky there, the pig accidentally ran into the pigsty so you didn't have to catch it again!||

I am the best pig walker ever

I had fun walking the pig. There were only two sad things: I could not hug the pig and I could not feed it apples. I also tried anything I could think of to go snooping around the farmhouse, but didn't manage  The theme is shoehorned indeed, but otherwise - cool little text adventure, if not a very complicated one.

Thanks for playing, @fabula-rasa! Yes, feeding the pig directly should have been in there, and maybe hugging too! :)

I also tried feeding the pig. I had a feeling I would lose it if I didnt give it an apple.

Maybe that could have been a bonus point (so you could finish with 8 out of 7).

All in all, as always, loved your LD entry!

Thanks for playing, @balimaarthebassfish! Yes, at some point I really need to learn to think of all the obvious needed bits :)

Very nice little game, I kept forgetting where I came from and a few easter eggs would have been amazing.

I love text adventures a lot and the idea of walking the pig is a lot of fun :) I was trying to put the apple in the crate and would never have figured out that you can just drop it, so a bit of guidance or some hints in-game would've been super helpful. Definitely appreciate that there's a transcript, I couldn't rest till I'd successfully walked the pig!!

Thanks for playing everyone!

@shmi yes, I should have had some more little things hidden in the game, that's always better!

@konfekt I tried hints in some previous games, and I should do so again. The problem is that they take time and focus to do well, and lately especially focus has been a bit of a problem for me during LD. I need to work on that!

@commanderstitch bah, I didn't even think of trying to eat the apple yourself! Making that do something sensible would have been a three minute job... Sometimes I hate open worlds!

This was a lot of fun. I like the different choices that there were, and it felt really good writing what I wanted since it felt like I was enacting my own story. Although I did get confused about which pig was where at some points, I think there were 3 different ones? A little more description would've helped telling them apart (like giving names like daisy, or the spotty pig). But all in all, this was really fun - good job!

Thanks for playing, @mr-bluecap ! There's just the one pig, but I suspect sometimes the way it moves around isn't very clear. Things happening outside the player's control is one of the things I'm not good at...

I finally made some time to play another nice little text adventure :) And it looks like I made a pig tired and happy. I don't think I had ever did that in any game before. In fact not even in the real life! And that something! The only thing that bothers me a little is why I carried like 10 apples for nothing!

Anyway, another nice text adventure! The first half was made by you, the rest in my head. That's the beauty of text adventures.

Thanks for playing @jiri-hysek ! I was worried about making it too hard
!>so I adjusted it so the pig walking into the sty by itself also counts for winning. Originally being on the leash was necessary there, and you definitely need apples to calm it down enough to get it back on the leash. Given how many people now missed that puzzle entirely, I'm not sure I made the right call...

What a lovely little game. Albeit short, it had some real feel good vibes. I didn't think the interpretation of the theme was very strong, but what does it matter, I got to go on a walk with a pig!

@tomrijnbeek Thanks for playing! It's true, I needed to use a shoehorn to make the game fit inside the theme.

I was planning something closer, but when I went to sleep on Friday night after a few hours of exploring and trying to refine ideas, I had the thought "A game about walking a pig" and that just felt so much nicer than anything I had come up with!

I enjoyed the mood, but as usual with text based games, I got lost because of my lack of imagination :D
Nice idea, funny and well thought!
I like the entry overall. GG.

Thanks for playing, @hakro ! I will take at least part of the blame, I definitely lacked some imagination while writing it as the conversation here clearly demonstrates :)

When I was a kid, I had a pet pig. Those little creatures are cute, mischievous, and quite the escape artists. Just like the one in this game! This was my first time playing a text adventure game, and I have to admit I was terrible. I managed to lose track of the pig entirely. Haha. But I did find a shoehorn and a bunch of apples. I really enjoyed it. Good job!
