Birthday Monster by justthestudio

[raw]
made by justthestudio for LD33 (JAM)
Everybody knows that kids love birthday parties, monsters and their fathers. In our game you have all of it.
Play as a father trying to entertain children in a bunch of minigames.

We couldn't finish on time everything we planned (like sound, polish and balance) but if you enjoy the effect of our efforts, follow us on twitter (@justthestudio), because we're going to deliver post-jam, well-polished version.

Controls:
Use mouse for every action. Goal of each minigame is shown in top-left corner during few first seconds.

UPDATE:
Thanks for very positive feedback! We started making post-jam version. We will focus on your suggestions - polishing both mechanics and difficulty of minigames, speeding everything up in Wario-Ware feel and most important - adding sound effects. We also have few minigames which didn't make it to the entry. Finally, I added WebGL build to the compo page.

I downloaded the windows version and it gives an error whenever I try to run the executable. Something about the data folder needing to be next to the .exe... and it is, but it still gives the error.

Wow I like the narrative spin you put on this. For a post-jam version you should speed it up a bit (WarioWare style) and polish the mini-games. Really great idea.

Sweet game, would work really well on mobile. It's got a bit of Dumb ways to die feels to it but it definitely needs some sounds.

Nice game. Very wario ware-ish. Visually everything looks super nice and I love how you used the concept of birthday wishes as lives.

I like so much about this. The visuals are cute, I love the take on the theme, I love the "haha, that's what I was actually doing" moments, and I loved the kid's reaction poses. Nice job. One of my favorites so far.

VERY nice graphics. Couldn't get pass the tree section even though. Maybe I should jump to the other side faster?

@orange08 I tried to reproduce this error, but me and my friend just downloaded zip file, extracted launched and everything worked. BUT when I tried to launch a game without extracting zip file I got an error you are writing about. Are you sure you extracted everything? We will still investigate a problem.

Haha. I like the art alot. Gameplay is solid. This resembles the art I'm into. I'm curious to know what program you used to achieve this.

Very cute twist on the theme. A couple of the timing things were pretty particular (leaning back and lighting the buildings on fire) but I loved the quick game, Wario-Ware feel. Nice work!

Great looking game. I learnt I am terrible at granting wishes, but it was still fun!

Reminds me a lot of dumb ways to die, and the graphics were very faithful to that kind or art style. The lack of audio wasn't very appealing but the game itself made up for that, well done!

I have no idea how to do the tree minigame and the tank one seems to be way too difficult to time, but other than that the game has some really cute graphics and the other minigames are pretty cool. It would be amazing with some more polishing and some sounds.

This is a really polished, well-made game! I really liked the visuals and how you went back and forth between the imaginary and then you get the reality of what the monster is doing after you mess up. Pretty funny! Great job!

Like you said, there's some things that are missing, but you have the start of a fun game. Really like that when you fail you see the dad at the party instead of the monster version.

It's definitely a fun little game. Adding more mini-games would definitely be great! I think the only thing that bothered me is not knowing when the game would start. If there was a countdown (or a click to play) that would make a big difference.

Very funny take on the theme! The art style is unique, and really fits the fanciful, kid's-story mood. The monster-to-dad/fantasy-to-reality parallels are especially creative! Glad to hear a post-jam's in the works, I love imaginative entries like this one!
