Tunnel Tiler by cogcomp

[raw]
made by cogcomp for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

I only had around 16 hours to make something this time around, but what the heck.. I wanted try out raylib so I ended up making some kind of game :smirk:

Tunnel Tiler

https://youtu.be/Zlw7s-w8P3M

It's basically an endless tunnel runner, that loops back on itself combined with a snake game.

Dodge all the tiles that aren't the same colour as the ones your ship is currently producing. Every lap all the ships switch to a different tile colour.

Move left/right with arrow keys. You can press SPACE a limited amount of times to skip over a small amount of tiles if you get locked in.

Blocking in a competitor gives you 512 extra points and every 512 points you receive an additional skip attempt.

The status display shows: How many players are left on the track. How many skips you have left. Your current tile colour. The colour that you will produce on the next lap. (So you can plan ahead). Your score.

To stop you all from getting bored, the game gets faster every lap of the limited tunnel.

Good luck!

Tools used Visual Studio 2022 (c++), Raylib, Bfx, Audacity, Gimp, Aseprite, Wing3D and Ableton lite.

Reminds me of the endless runner flash games from years ago. Loved those and I love this game. Very fun to play! Good game!

Thanks @treblecolby I'm not sure what to do about that though.. Those trigger happy antivirus heuristics are really starting to get annoying

Neat idea. I'd probably enjoy it more if I could play it in fullscreen and have a better warning before my ship's color changes. There were a few times I just suddenly died and I wasn't sure why. I think it might've been the color changing while I was moving down a path that was my current color.

Great idea and graphics!
And this has a comprehensible explanation of gameplay on video and in-game text.

- Pretty fun cool idea, I liked the way the map wrapped, so you had to also plan for future laps.
- I wasn't able to access the instructions but pretty quickly figured it out, apart from being able to move on the same color blocks.
- Sometimes you would get a near instant game over because you spawned close to an enemy and it would move over the player before I was ready to react. maybe have the enemies move straight for like 1-2 seconds.

Nice effort. Perhaps it would be useful to be warned more visibly and for longer before your color switches. I know there's a sound that plays but it seems like too little warning for the most important event in the game. Some flashing on the ship, for instance, would work well. Other than that this was pretty good for only 16 hours + trying out a new library. Nice job!

Found it a bit hard to figure out what was going on to start with - I'd probably have gone for a cleaner visual style, but very evocative of that 90's screensaver aesthetic! Felt nice once I figured it out though, my main wish was for a "speedup" button to let me get ahead of competitors!

Cool game, kinda reminds me of old games I used to play on my dad's phone a while back. For only being made in 16 hours this is impressive!

Great arcade game! I really enjoyed the environment. The tunnel ambiance reminds me of a kaleidoscope, heheh.

It's like a endless runner, but i liked the mechanic that the "road" becomes more crowded and harder to dodge. Nice work!

It reminds me of old Tron minigames, really fun. Only 2 things I noticed:
- If there is any cue of imminent color change, I couldn't find it (and crashed as a result)
- Some games get sabotaged by enemies less than a second after a game starts.

Still, really amusing, and impressive for a 16h game with AI

very fun once you get into it, nice presentation too!
the key repetition kicks in a bit fast for my taste

Pretty addicting and tough!

A nice take on snake, the music was quite fitting, the AI is impressing and the graphics and GUI is well done.

If I wand to find something to critisize, it would be that the difficult is to hard. Less speed and enemys at the beginning would be my preferation, then difficulty would have more room to increase.

But all in all a great entry, I had much fun playing it.
