Raft or die by Jacinto Mba

DreamShaperv7amansittinginaverytinydesertislandwhil2.jpg

You find yourself stranded on a picturesque but uninhabited tropical island after a shipwreck. The island is surrounded by shark-infested waters, and your only hope of survival is to build a raft and escape to safety. Your mission is to gather resources, craft a seaworthy raft, and navigate treacherous waters filled with hungry sharks.

HOW TO PLAY

Goal

Your goal is to run away from the island in a raft you have to craft. For that, you must collect the wood pieces you'll find floating on the water, while avoiding to be eaten by the hungry sharks around.

Also, you must not forget to feed yourself during the stay at the island. Keep an eye on your hunger level and eat the coconuts falling from the palm trees. The hungrier you are, the more slowly you will move, and hence an easier prey for the sharks.

Finally, your time is limited. With every earthquake, the island sinks a few inches, so.. you better get out before being devored by the wild sea!!

Controls

 • WASD, arrow keys, joypad or left analog stick to move the character around.
 • CTRL, Space or joystick/joypad button 0 ("A" in Xbox style controllers, "X" in PS), to perform actions like collecting wood or crafting.

I don't know how to build raft, there should be some info about it :/ I like the shaking animation

I like your name :). Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I got right on time for the game submission and left the instructions at itch.io for later. Basically you have to collect the floating wood pieces and then go to the crafting area that you'll see highlighted on the beach.

Game felt a little confusing and I didnt really know what to do - maybe adding some instructions on the jam page would be useful. Apart from that nice graphics though.

I was able to create a raft and escape the island. Dang those are some strong sharks if they can shake the island. Maybe the next version can have a daring escape sequence trying to get your raft away from the sharks and the island. Great job making a complete game!

Thank you all for your feedback! The itch.io page does contains instructions, but yeah, it's a good idea to have them in the LD jam page too so I will do that.
I will take note for the Post Mortem :)

PS - The island is not actually shaken by the sharks, but earthquakes occur on a regular basis that make the island sink a few inches every time.

Rafted away! Not sure I won or lost, the image appeared too fast and the game restarted.
Had fun! Liked how my speed is directly connected with my hunger bar.

Love the graphics and the cover image. Although there were no instructions in-game, I was easily able to figure out what to do and build the raft. It would have been nice to know how many more resources I needed to get before building the raft, without some kind of progress indicator I was not sure if I was making any progress. But you can add that in the next version. Everything had a sound effect which helped make things clear as well. Great job.

Quite fun the first run through, I was able to make the raft. Unfortunately I did not know why my character was slowing down so much. I also wish the title page was not AI generated.

Thanks a lot for your comments guys, I'm taking not and adding your ideas and comments to my backlog. There's gonna be a significant amount of work for post-mortem!

@super8bitrafa yes, a quick interactive tutorial is one of the things I wanted to do but didn't make it on time. Will come in the next releases. Meanwhile, do you think the instructions at the page are not clear enough?

@enrique-romero so I wish too. Unfortunately I lack of the talent to draw a nice splash screen + deadline was approaching so I just decided to generate it by AI. And btw al AI generation attempts where horrible, the current splash was the most decent one among a few dozen images I tried to generate! xD

Pretty quick little game! I wasn't sure if the sharks did anything since they just kind of ran into me but my health never went down.

Looks very pretty and the music was nice. Good job!

First of all, I was really impressed I survived a bite of a shark! Even several bites! Next I tried to gather some wood and nothing happened. I was terrified by not knowing what to do next by only realizing there is one more in the south direction of the screen. Quite sad the game just ends there once you build the raft, but I think the game fits the theme

Nice idea and the space was truely limited thanks to the funny looking sharks (or seals dressed as sharks?). The graphics could've been a bit cleaner, especially the weird blurriness around the character when moving. The music was pretty chill.

That was very fun and exciting! I had to play it twice to have enough time to gather all the wood for the raft, because I didn't know what to do on the first run.

It was a bit confusing at first where to start, but I managed it pick up the pace in my second gameplay and collect a bunch of wood and eat coconuts. However, I clicked ESC once during my third playthrough and was unable to return to the game.

Great concept, I would love to see a more polished game developed from the concept here.

I never figured out how to make a raft. I really wish my character was in the mouth of the shark attack. The health bar concept in the event of a shark attack felt a bit too gamified. Theme not clearly implemented?

Never figured out how to craft the raft but did really enjoy the goofy face on the shark

Thanks for your comments, I keep taking note of all your inputs.

@vr-corry In the itch.io page you can find downloadable versions with the suffix "_post_portem". Those are built from my development branch where I continue implementing imporovements and things I could not complete on time.

Nice take on the topic. It was fun collecting the planks while escaping from the sharks. I didn't figure out how to craft the planks together, but I liked it still. Good job!

It is too hard to understand what you're supposed to do. But once I figured it out, it was very easy to complete. Almost an unintended puzzle. Other than that, the game looks funny, and in general not bad for a first time.

I really enjoyed the game; it's quite simple but has its unique twist. The gameplay is quite original, in my opinion. Keep it up. I won't mention all the shortcomings and bugs in the game as they have been described above

Clean and simple. I liked the overall style of the graphics like the player and the shark (and the island even kind of reminded me of the old Runescape textures). Also loved how coconuts just get kicked in the air to eat them that was hilarious.
