Greetings, Intern.

Manage your workplace through an endless stream of tasks. Your desk might look small, but that's the best we have.

Do your job right or else you'll get fired.

Good luck.

Controls

  • Click and drag to organize documents
  • Click to focus on a document
  • Press A on your keyboard or the cross to defocus
  • Follow the instruction on the document to complete the task
  • Destroy this paper to start the day

Tips and tricks

  • For math operations, checking the last digits of the numbers is generally enough!
  • None of the tasks implemented in this Jam game require shredding the paper - everything goes in the sorting bin on the corner of the desk.

Known issues

Dragging performance might be slow. A Windows build of the game is provided to help with performance, but weaker machines may not handle dragging well even on the Windows build.

Tools

  • Game made in Unity 2022.3.10
  • 3D assets made in Blender
  • 2D art made in Medibang Paint Pro
  • Music and some sounds made using Beepbox
  • Other sound effects recorded with Audacity on a better mic than last time

Credits

  • Code by Lily and Pengu
  • 2D art, music and sound effects by Pengu
  • 3D assets by Eg-GE
  • Extra credits can be found on the itch.io page

Changes

Since first release

  • Added a clearer keyboard cue for defocusing documents.
  • Added some animation on the shredder by the side of the desk.

After the end of the Jam

  • T+1h34 - Fixed the camera getting stuck on the floor if a focused document were to fall off the desk or in the shredder

I played for 20mins straight, why the hell is this so addicting? Stellar humor and just the right amount of challenge kept me at it and even though it stuttered a bit in the browser, I wanted to keep on trying from where I left off. While the artstyle didn't blow me away initially, I appreciated it as the game went on, it is easy to look at and does its job quite well.
Gameplay wise, the biggest improvement that you could make is to add a bit of snapping to the pages. While the completely free movement is at the core of the game, pages got stuck on the edges of the stack or the shredder a bit too frequently. The tasks themselves were super funny and I could see them being easily expandable.
Regarding the theme, the space on the table never felt really limiting, the tasks may just as well have been placed in a queue. I'm not too sure how this could be fixed, perhaps by requiring a flat surface to fill them out?
Not sure on this, but I honestly think the theme is secondary to making a cool game and you efinitely succeeded in that! I fully expect this to be the funniest game I will see in this Jam, thank you so much for the experience!

I had a blast playing this game. The atmosphere was great, and the art style really immersed me in the office setting. Filling out pointless forms really made me feel like an intern. I also loved the mechanic of needing to physically drag the papers to the bin, making it sometimes difficult to manage all the incoming papers while moving the old ones. I also found a bug that I thought was quite amusing. If you clip a paper between the paper bin and the coffee mug, the paper will go flying. If you manage to click the paper in mid-flight, the intern will suffer a heart attack, and the camera will spin wildly until it comes to a halt on the floor. I thought this just added to the atmosphere. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the music, since it became very annoying after a while. But besides that, Paper Pile Panic is a game I could play for hours. Hope to see more next Jam!!!

Thank you for the feedback! :sparkles:

- @amygeddon, regarding the camera getting stuck: we were aware of this bug but forgot to fix it in time. Just pushed a fix so that the camera returns to its neutral position should the paper get destroyed.

The challenge for this is just enough to keep me wanting to go back to it, any game which slowly descends into chaos is always fun to me.
I enjoyed the art style and the clever choices for the tasks.
I did have some issues when pages landed on top of each other, when I tried to complete one it would just change focus to the other and not remain on the top page.
Overall I really enjoyed this game, plenty of scope to increase its size should you choose to.

LOVE LOVE LOVED this game!!! Had me absolutely wheezing with all the humour, I malfunctioned for about 10 seconds trying to figure out if I was NOT NOT a robot hahaha. The most I've laughed out of all the games I've played so far, storyline is on theme, paper throwing is wild, boss is rude. 11/10!

This was super fun, I love that you could just throw all your stuff off your desk.

super fun game with a catchy background track! Being able to switch to another paper while zoomed in was a really nice little QOL feature

The only minor gripes I have is that there were a lot of duplicate math questions, and it did feel a bit jarring to have to click a specific spot to exit instead of just clicking on the desk

I hope these contracts aren't binding. I just agreed to Lorem Ipsum. Great fun - clever game and really well executed! Took my some attempts to get through level 5, but I finally made it! Amazing job on the music 3d assets and art as well!!

Needlessly stressful and filled with mindless tasks - nice accurate depiction and strangely fun to play for some reason. The graphics and audio fit really well with the tone of the game. I like that document-based games are becoming more of a thing.

This is so good! Hope you can get enough ratings in time :((( Super polished and lots of fun to play with a bunch of hilarious new notes every day and fun, hectic gameplay. So many variations of the music! Overall really impressive and one of my favourites. Amazing work!!

I think you guys got somewhat robbed, I think your game was way better than your scores :( Maybe rating more games in future jams would ensure that you get more reviews and a more accurate score for your game.

Yeah, have to admit we were kinda slow on that end this time. Apparently there was also an issue through the rating period that prevented some players to rate our game? Not too sure what happened there, but in the end we got enough ratings to get a score - big thanks to everyone who stopped by and could successfully rate the game!

~top 25% in roughly every category is something that makes me really happy, as making games really is just a hobby at this point in my life, but it's something I really enjoy doing whenever the chance comes up
