Mech Express

MechExpress4.gif MechExpress5.gif

Overview

You play as a cat-drone tasked to protect your domicile from rat-tanks that are trying to destroy it. Every once in a while, crates and cat-mechs will drop from the sky, which you can pick up and move around. Crates have different effects, and will explode when their timer runs out. Survive as long as you can, and try to get a high score!

Controls

WASD - Move Space - Grab/Release Mouse hover - Show radius/range of objects

How to Play:

By grabbing and moving around crates, you can position them to either help your cat-mechs, or damage the rat-tanks. Each cat-mech has a water level you have to monitor... If their water level reaches 0, they will attack slower and lose health every attack. Bring cat-mechs close together in order to apply crate effects in a mass. Move bombs away, and into rat-tanks. ∴ Deliver crates of supply to your cat-mechs!

Love the visuals and music! It was pretty hectic to control everything - the combat could have been much slower paced so we could focus more on the packages and like planning what to use on what although that might not be the direction you had in mind. Nice entry!

I love character art and the animations in this are so fluid! Gameplay of blowing up tanks with bombs and fighting alongside other robots is great!

@lorenzocgt @perryseity @triangle-point - Thank you guys for your positive words!

@peterfiftyfour - Thanks for your feedback! On the direction that the game took... It was never clear from the start , so we just winged the gameplay last second and so it might not have been too great... Will take in and consider your words tho!

It's a fun, fast-paced game that kept me on the edge of concentration throughout. I really enjoyed the supply delivery mechanic - it added a unique layer of strategy and urgency to the gameplay. I also liked cute pixelated art style - overall, atmosphere and aesthetics gave me some Metal Gear vibes, which is a game I love! So definately a plus) For sure, this game was a satisfying and rewarding experience.

The cover art and character design is really good! I also really like the paralax on the title screen when you move your mouse! The screen transitions are super-rad too! Also the mecha-kitty is super adorable too!

This game was a ton of fun. I love that I could understand the controls and gameplay within seconds. The character animation adds a lot to the polish. Also, I liked the title screen, music, and graphics.

@wadlo Thank you for the feedback! I actually didn't have time to implement instructions into the game 😅 But I did add box descriptions in the description of the page... Any ideas where I should put it to be more visible?
Wadlo
03. May 2023 · 02:52 UTC
I'd say, to make them more visible, introduce them, one at a time, during gameplay. You'll have to strike a balance of not interrupting the player's flow too much, so maybe start off with just one type of box, then after a minute or two, introduce some more. Also, about the instructions, that's totally understandable! This is a great game jam game.

Super fun game! Cool twist on the tower defense genre, the sounds and music are lovely, the ground leaves a little to be desired but the characters are great. Managed to last until 105, felt satisfying to reach 100 and it feels like it could be difficult to go above? The rhythm feels exponential, a little slow at the start, and very fast past ~90.
Great job!

Really fun, and a nice spin on the theme! The gameplay loop encouraged this hectic overcooked-esque time management, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I especially liked the green sniper tanks that required me to play differently and do some target prioritisation. It was too hectic for me to understand what the other tanks did, but I didn't need to react. I could just play normally and they would die soon enough. I think it'd be good if it was clear what the different tanks introduced, maybe you could introduce each of them on their own for a while at a reduced difficulty too?

Impressive work! I had a great time.

This definitely has a lot of potential as a "High mobility" Tower Defence/RTS.

Please consider mouse/touch controls for future releases. 👍

Great take on a tower defense type game, cute art as well! The randomness felt a bit punishing at times when I had long breaks between ammo crates and my units were sitting idly for quite a bit. Great multi-level interpretation of the theme with delivering the mechs and crates!

@drainkid Yes, two of some of my favorite things, cats and mechs! Glad we're on the same page xD

@divi Ayy thanks for playing! Definitely is a bit slow at first, but gets hectic once you have multiple groups to keep track of (I tried this too haha)

@akuirako Aww thanks for the high compliment, I also fell in love with the sprites somewhere along the way! ^~^

@fuse-in-a-bowl I agree with you, the difference isn't very obvious besides the green (they threw me off at first too haha). Difficulty modes sounds exiting honestly, I'd love to have a chance to revisit this game/concept in the future!

@0x-void-x0 Thank you! [NoWhone] did an amazing job with the code on such short notice, (I kept switching up on him midway too). Thank you for playing!

@jp-design Absolutely! This is something I would love to expand upon sometime in the future! xD

@str8griz Aye I'm glad you had fun with it! There definitely are some really fun ideas I wanna try with this moving forward to future jams ^~^

@roalinn Heheh much thanks!!

@bqq Thanks for the insight! The lack of water crates can be pretty brutal, especially in the split-defense strat haha Q-Q

I was surprised by how much I liked this game. The timing on the crate spawning was set really well to allow the player to get all crates and the odd cat movement in between if needed, and I think you did well on the overall difficulty scaling. Unfortunately it looks like the main strategy is just to pile all the cats together, and I don't think the green tanks were quite enough to fix that issue. That's a real shame as I think making the player prioritize between groups would really make this game shine even more. Overall really fun game with a good amount of hectic energy!

@wiredoverload Thanks for playing! I agree that there definitely is room for adjustments (I've noticed that in my gameplay as well for the most part). I find myself quite intrigued with this game haha- hopefully I can revisit it sometime xD

Fun game! It became really intense real quick! Had was almost stressed, but in a good way :D
I like the mechanics, the design the overall look and feel. It's easy to understand and to play. I felt I kind of hacked it, when I simply put all the cats around the house and dropped all reinforcements in the middle. Turns out bombs can land there too :D and green tanks must be in range - nice how it naturally became more challenging! Maybe it was just my end, but at some point the audio crashed continously.

Such a fun game! Feels good to play and the visuals are fantastic! I especially like the camera shake and the red damage overlay! Simple things like that always just make everything feel and look so much better :D I only wished that the sound effects would be a tiny bit lower in volume from the get go! good that I could change it from the menu tho! Music is a bop! Good work! :3

MEOW! (The distant screams of my poor cat mechs echoing from their robotic graves)

What a fun little game - the strategy of placing the mechs and then also the buffs made for a much deeper strategy experience. The SFX were great, although I will continue to be haunted by the last meow from my Super Kitty Mech 045 (she was my favorite).

Fun, worked well, nice art - what else could I ask for?

This game definitely has legs to be expanded on!

Great work :)

Exceptional game! Very fun and engaging. The artwork is super cute and I like the music. I only wish there was a bit more structure to the game, simply playing until you inevitably lose feels a bit unsatisfying.

I would love to see this expanded upon!

Lots of nice little bits of polish here. I absolutely adore the art!

As others have commented, I'd love to see more done with this. The core loop is fantastic, it just needs a bit more structure to really shine. This would be a fantastic candidate for some post-jam love when you're in the mood. Lots low hanging fruit to play with like structured levels, catmech upgrades, variants, more powerups, etc. Some roguelite mechanics could be fun too. Maybe ape some ideas from Vampire Survivors' progression system.

Nice work! I hope I get to see more some day :smiley_cat:

This is a great game. Interesting. An unusual approach to the topic. At first I didn't understand it, but then I understood it. Class game. It can be seen that they tried, in two, and took a very difficult genre, tower defense. But you are great fellows)

@7331 I actually experienced a similar issue with music/sound cutting as I progressed past a certain point- I'm sure there's a way to lessen the load, however this technically isn't a bullet hell with projectile collisions, so it kinda goes over my head haha.. That said, now I'm curious- thanks for the feedback!

@aloya Thanks Brodder heheh xD

@alks Haha I agree, NoWhone is really good at them juicy mechanics! I'll keep the sound in mind for the next one!

@hcs-hades IKR! That *MEOW* really shook me to my core- I have 2 cats (Bobo and Leo), and they never make such a gut-wrenching sound like that... R.I.P. little robo-cattos Q-Q

@agudar Much thanks friend! ^~^

@alchemic Wow thank you, I'm happy you liked it! This project was quite endearing, and I definitely plan to expand on some stuff for future projects xD

@ttu-hasan Aye glad you enjoyed it!

@fireslash Yes, yes! I agree- this is one of those projects that would be really fun to expand upon (I personally want a cute little story haha). Thank you for playing!

@enra Thank you! I do plan to mess around with some of the ideas/vibes from this entry, a proper update, however, would depend on [NoWhone], the mastermind behind the overall game design and development =P

@cinterre Thank you! The tower defence + redeployment was quite fun, and I want to try it again sometime!

@alexascher Definitely, this is the greatest takeaway from our entry for LD53, it's a really fun idea to work around!

@alexsolonnikovp4 Much appreciated! When our dev [NoWhone] showed me the gameplay I was quite taken aback (in a good way), it was nothing I've seen before haha! xD Thank you for playing!

it's a super fun tower defense game with some pretty nice art as well. I was a bit overwhelmed at the beginning as the game as it starts fast, but once I get into rhythm it was fun to play. if I have to nitpick something that could be improved, the hitbox on the soldiers was a bit awkward but there is a high chance playing with touchpad is not the best setup for this game haha. great entry!

Cool twist on the tower defense genre! The animations really added a lot to the gameplay as they made the picking up and slamming down cats and crates extra satisfying.

I agree with others that the gameplay gets to a point where it's just a bit too fast. The game isn't difficult at all, in fact I walked away for a few minutes and left it running before coming back to write this comment and the game is still alive (with the cats crowded around the house). The low difficulty made it so that when it got too hectic, I felt really demotivated to actually move the cats around since I was at no risk of losing and keeping track of everything felt like it wasn't worth the effort.

There are a lot of features you could add to improve the gameplay, here are some suggestions off the top of my head:

* Bonus zones that spawn in periodically. If you place cats in these zones, they have increased fire rate or infinite ammo or something. This way the player would move the cats more often to take advantage

* Make the green tanks fire a timed missile that does massive damage. This way when a green tank spawns, the player has to prioritize taking them down and redirect their cats as soon as possible.

* Cover system - Put sandbags and stuff in the world that gives cats defensive bonuses

* Flanking system - Give the mechs a damage boost if they shoot a tank from behind. This way the player has to weigh the value of the increased damage against the time lost picking up and moving the cat.

There's a lot you could do to make this game really cool if you guys decide to develop it further

@bartalomew You know what, I think that would be pretty fun- If it's fun enough, I'll keep mobile ports in mind for future stuff xD

Very cute and fun game! I loved the art, both of the cats and the rats.

It did get a bit easy with how many cat robots I was getting, but definitely a lot of fun moving them around, as well as a pretty unique mechanic.

Great job!
