Cawlector by Bloodbane

[raw]
made by Bloodbane for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

You play as Caw, a crow who likes to collect seeds and drop them into his nest. Collect all seeds in each stage to progress. Do not collect different colored seeds cause Caw can't carry different seeds at once.

Control scheme:

  • Numpad keys = Move around and aim shots

  • X = Shoots feather.

  • Enter = Confirm/Pause the game.

  • F8 = Take a screenshot.

Features:

  • Can move and shoot in 8 directions.

  • Higher score bonus from submitting more seeds at once.

  • 10 stages.

  • Cool tracks by Avid and Eric Matyas

    Enjoy this short collection game!

Windows is giving "this is an unsafe" dialog when running the exe. Sorry.

I really liked the game, it's one of the most complete ones I've seen here so far. The music is also very cool.

@mramaizng : Don't worry about it, the .exe is safe.

I really like this one! Simple concept, satisfying gameplay, stylish art, and great sound design. The extensive options are a nice touch — awesome job!

Good game! I managed to beat all the levels, but it wasn't that hard because I think there is no way to fail in this game.

I think you waited a bit too long before introducing enemies, you could have easily introduced them in level 2 or 3. And another enemy type with maybe a different movement pattern would make a game more fun!

Game is good, really good. Nice game play, easy to go from one level to the next. Keys are good, right firing speed, can hold down the key to have continuous firing.

The only thing just wish the screen was bigger.

You did good.

Cute game! It's easy to play. But I found it hard to put things into the nest. It seems that I have to wait for seconds before things are collected, and there are no hints.

Cool game, I think the enemies made it much more interesting and would like to see them appear way earlier, probably after the first 2 introductory levels. Sometimes when trying to deposit seeds, the nest would highlight and as I'm waiting and not moving it would go dark and I would have to move closer.

Wasn't expecting to see here a game made with BoR, cool to see variety of game engines used!

As score didn't do anything, I found the optimal way to play the game was to shoot all the collectables as well. That way I was able to finish levels faster than actually collecting anything.

Interesting idea! But the seed selection could use a bit more variety — for example, it would be nice if you could change their color.

Great game! The increasing difficulty of the levels is a big plus. For improvements, the flight could be smoother and the music is a bit loud. Love the addition of enemies!

A nice game! It got harder as the levels went on which is great. I think you did really well. Nice graphics and controls! :D

Solid game, it took me a long time to figure out you have to hold space to deposit the seeds? It wasn't quite intuitive :)

Overall nice simple casual game without much depth to it. I liked the style, but I think in the future you should improve in graphics, and also I found the controls on arrows rather more uncomfortable than the usual WASD one

Thanks for playing guys!
@imos & @drikdrok: Yeah, I couldn't figure out intuitive way to tell player to wait couple seconds on nest to submit the seeds. So this is the best way I could made in time.
@samuli: Yep, we could make more game types with OpenBoR engine. As for destroying seeds, ah yes, never crossed my mind someone would do that. Might need to figure out incentive to earn scores. Thanks for the feedback.

I think this is a pretty good game. It's quite simple yet challenging. Overall, it's quite classic, and the entire game is very complete. Considering it was completed by one person from start to finish, I gave him a pretty good evaluation and praise. I'm looking forward to the birth of his new work.

Nice music! The graphics are cute too, but the game did not function correctly because I ran it on Linux, but still gave you max ratings. Wish you gave the source code so that people could compile it for their platforms, but great job though!

Cute crow! I liked that you had to weave between the seeds to pick just one colour at a time. I had trouble hitting the enemies and often ended up just destroying the seeds with stray feathers, so I just kept dodging them in the end.

It's a cool entry - playable, with good graphics and fitting music. It's nice to see a little bit of exotic/old school stuff like OpenBoR engine used.

The gameplay works for me though I'd prefer there was a penalty that would force me to actually avoid enemies, or even just a timer that I could race against to get some sort of value for optimizing my playthrough. But on the other hand, at least I was able to finish the game. 😅

That being said - and I know it's a limitation of the engine - it would be great to have a web build available as well. You can look into OpenBOR-WASM or something like that, though I'm not sure how viable it is.

Congrats on the finished game!

Haha, it's a cool and easy-to-understand game. I also really liked the music. But there are some issues: the enemies really could have appeared earlier, and the seeds weren't too easy to collect. The controls weren't very intuitive in some areas.
Overall, it's a really cool game for one person. Good luck with the jam!
