Čertík´s final stroll by Janinna21

[raw]
made by Janinna21 for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

After skipping previous LD jam, we, I and my girlfriend Jana, looked forward to this, autumn one, with hopes of having enough time to participate fully. We had preparation plans. We wanted to go full steam. Sadly, life events caught up to us. My dearest friends health conditions suddenly worsened just few weeks ahead of this jam. At times, I was not even thinking of doing the jam. I wanted to give everything I got to helping my tomcat Čertík recover. Sadly he passed away in the vigil morning. Even though we are still grieving, and we are still struggling to cope with the memories of seeing him pass away. I put my foot down and decided to create a thing, that would help us create more idealistic vision of him leaving this world. We definitely didn't follow the theme this time. We only created this little requiem for our dearest friend, whose company we cannot enjoy anymore.

Čertík or Čert as he was called means fiend or little devil in Czech. However his tender nature and friendliness definitely made him worth a voyage to Heaven.

Sorry, this game looks like a semi-finished product. The cat may jump on the platform twice and bounce high. I think this may be a bug. And there is no music or cover.

It's so sweet that we're bringing the cat to heaven. The cat's texture looks great. And the final cutscene is awesome. It's a shame the gameplay is a bit repetitive, but still, great job!

I am truly sorry to hear about this situation. I also share the sentiment that games serve as a valuable medium for recording life's moments and carrying emotional significance. Although the game's mechanics appear relatively simple, a certain, perhaps unintended, consequence of the design (or perhaps an unforeseen bug?) has introduced a unique layer of enjoyment. Specifically, when a player holds the jump button while rising to pass above a cabinet (or platform), they experience an unexpected acceleration. It's possible this effect stems from a lack of a maximum speed cap on the player's movement. Regardless of its origin, this particular and somewhat surprising characteristic has certainly contributed a distinct and unexpected pleasure.

The game was longer than I expected but worth it! The cat made it to the gate![Screenshot 2025-10-07 161955.png](///raw/3cf/56/z/6e99e.png)

Condolences for you loss! In contrast to @eggnisi, I think this is more of a feature than a bug, reminds me of Icy Tower if someone remembers that. If it wasn't for that, I don't think I would have finished the game. If you manage, you can skip multiple platforms in a row.

Čertík didn't need my help, but I got him to the pearly gates. It's a lovely little memorial, thank you.

This game is really sweet.

I am really sorry for your loss, I am sure Čertík lived a good life filled with joy.

I believe that Čertík would wish for you to remember the good times you had with him and not have his memory bring you misery.

Remember, you're also sparing Čertík the confusion and grief of having witnessed you pass away, death is a natural thing, it's the only prophecy that never fails, we can only embrace it.

@evil23 @eggnisi @shelter132 You are absolutely right @evil23. The final speed is actually capped. But it is intended still. My original inspiration was [Winter bells from 2006](ferryhalim.com/orisinal/g3/bells.htm) which we played when I was in high school. Icy tower was also an inspiration, however as far as I remember, icy towers movement was a wee bit more complex.
I also didn't want the player to not be able to finish the game, because we thought everybody should be able to accompany Čertík to the heavens gate. Because of that, we had to do "solid platforms" instead of disappearing bells. So the result is kind of mix, that is set up to be non-punishing. For that I don't really consider it a game.
I thank you all for giving it a go. Hope you have a great day.

In a fantasy world woven from pixels, a jet-black kitten with a pure white heart-shaped mark on its chest stands on a cloud as fluffy as cotton, gazing up at the magnificent golden gate ahead.
The sky is a rich orange-yellow, and the clouds are a pale icy blue, giving the entire world a retro pixel-game texture. It has just completed a long yet full-of-surprises adventure, traversing countless unknown levels, and finally arrived at this gate that symbolizes both the end and a new beginning. Every jump and every exploration has left its mark of bravery in this pixelated world. And now, all the weariness has turned into pure joy at the moment of arrival—this adventure, is totally worth it!
