Trogg Village Defense by thebrickanator

[raw]
made by thebrickanator for LD33 (COMPO)
This game is constructed of two rounds. In round one you play as the villagers while in round two due to a revolt of a monster named Trogg, you play for extra points as Trogg.

Your Instructions:
Your village is upon attack from a green slimy hungry monster. You must form and battle this monster with the strongest villagers you can afford. Coins are earned each time a villager succeeds in hitting Trogg.
Each time Trogg eats one of your village's loyal citizens, he will grow.

Once you take control of Trogg all points will be earned by eating villagers.

My personal website: www.qsdevelopment.toppysites.com;

Entirely created within the 48 hour time frame.

After notes:
I apologize for any poor performance... It runs on 60 fps on my pc (limited to 30) however I am sure that this will be less on some computers so I apologize for that :D

%80 of the lag is caused by the tiled background being drawn every step and I will change that in future iterations.

I filled the screen with villagers soon to be destroyed, and encountered a crash. In any case, I love the visual style and the hands-off approach to it. Very unique!

Really really cool. I wasn't sure what happened when I became the monster (I think I was under a house or something), but I quickly caught on. Awesome all around!

This game was VERY fun. My final score was 11225.

This type of gameplay, where you play two opposing forces but doing better in one is not counter productive to the other, is really neat. Not something I've seen a lot of before (Nothing comes to mind).

Besides for the lag, this game was great! It was a lot of fun, the music was kind of catchy and i really liked the look of it, especially the monster. At first I didn't know how it had anything to do with the theme, but it was cool to be able to be both the villagers and the monster. Overall, really great game!

Haha, I thought the game would be like mine, because mine is a village with villagers (which I didn't got time to implement too)
But it is way better than mine ;(
hahaha
Awesome job!
Best game till now, by far!

I want to play this game. Looks pretty awesome! But I'm not sure why I can't click on the button that says "Build more houses here" and it appears to be a bit off the screen for me.

@ranmaru90 yea that is a bug I found after the 48 hours that only happens I believe, if your screen is too small to fit the game window. if you click within the actual game zone (where there are no black bars and where the button was supposed to be) the button should still activate.

fyi: The bug occurs because I'm drawing the buttons on a gui layer whereas the mouse position is checked on the game layer and so I had to do calculations to check the location of the mouse's relative position. When the window gets shrinked, the gui layer scales but the game layer doesn't, hence why this bug is caused. I believe that the ludum dare rules allow for small bug fixes on things like this so I will upload a fixed version now.

The first half was a lot of fun, and the second half felt a lot of fun, but for some reason I always dreaded the switch.

This is a fun set of mechanics. It's an interesting trade-off on building enough buildings to score high on the round 2 but not so many that you just get murdered immediately. Well done.

Really fun! I love how it turns from a strategy game into a feeding frenzy. Really satisfying.

Love the fluidity of the green blob and the deep satisfaction of destroying everything I made.

I loved the blob effects. I liked the mechanic you came up with. It was fun trying to build up the town as best as we could before just destroying it ourselves. The splattering effects and blood and chomps made the game feel very satisfying. Great game!

Final score 10064. I liked the idea of building out a force to take on the monster, especially with some of the crazy attacks (not sure throwing fish was actually helping), but was slightly disappointed that the game ramped up the money so quickly that by the end I was building the most expensive dwellings as fast as I could click the menu. I also definitely enjoyed the switchover from villager to enemy. It looks like there could be some good strategy in creating villagers that are good for initially defeating trogg, but wouldn't hinder me as much in the second half. I ended up in the end funneling the villagers through a narrow passage between two vouses and some trees such that I could keep going back and forth killing a ton of villagers without giving them enough room to attack. Nicely done.

The graphics and smoothness of the game is impressive. It was kinda confusing for me at first. Had to re-read the help in the help menu. Congrats on submitting your entry

Very cool game! :D
I think the monstro phase could be quicker, once you eat all the villagers, is kinda boring having to wait them to respawn.
Good job!

Really nice game. It'd be nice if, when you built a new type of character, the game paused to show the character and explain how it works (sort of like when you transition to monster).
