Souls Keeper by basic_eagles

[raw]
made by basic_eagles for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

Souls Keeper - is a dynamic diffucult movement game where you need to escape from hell and collect human souls to extended your being in world of the living. We're playing as a low caste demon that trying to escape from hell.

You can adjust the sensitivity by pressing escape.

!!!YOU SHOULDN'T MOVE WHEN THE RED FACE APPEARS ON THE SCREEN. THERE'S A PROMPT AFTER DEATH IN THE GAME, BUT IT'S VERY QUICK, AND WE CAN'T FIX IT YET.!!!

Known issues:

1) The angel's attack may trigger if you're standing still on slopes.

2) After releasing the zipline, the character may begin sliding uncontrollably.

3) Sometimes you can get stuck in collision.

We're actively fixing these problems.

Cool game, I liked the parkour, it reminded me of the game Neon White

Sorry but i have bad mouse control so can't correctly play. I can't finish tutor because of little sensitivity. I tried to make it more in system settings but it won't help.

But game looks nice.

> Sorry but i have bad mouse control so can’t correctly play.

I know how hard this is to work around, but damn well is it worth it.
Unfortunately this made me quit at an instant, because this particular "implementation" of mouse controls is so abysmal that it renders anything unusable in my eyes.
(My multi-screen setup certainly didn't help the case.)

For 3 days of work its super fun movement game.

i had blast with it, learning ways to cut some angles and set the record (i beated 1st level in 29 seconds, believe me or not).

Second level was tough, i think one more soul to extend time is required, for people who skipped them at start. It was really cool, thank you!

For those who struggles in web version, you should try .exe, its run smoother and it helps your aim

An amazing game, well done, the only wish is that the dynamics of the game should not be slowed down so much by the restart screen.

Wow that is difficult. Great vibes with the metal and the speed. Nice smooth movements. The apartment building aesthetic looks great. The yellow and red targets really pop out. Even when moving quickly, I'll spot what I need.

this game has potential, we need to perfect the movement, work on the level design, and refine the mechanics with the "angel"

Wow! This game is amazing — it really reminds me of Ghostrunner. The graphics, music, physics, and mechanics are all top-notch. Definitely one of my favorites so far! I would like a faster restart though

I'm a big fan of movement games, and the style. However, I have two massive gripes, firstly for a movement game, you don't keep nearly enough momentum. Secondly, I would've played a lot longer if that demon that 'Has a choice for me' whenever I die didn't exist.

You should really just let the player restart as fast as possible in this style of game!!

Probably crafted well and fun to play if i knew how to progress beyond the 2nd soul in the first level

@nnnnneeeedddd Thanks for the feedback. Could you tell me where you encountered issues with the game's dynamics? (besides the death screen)

@korzhik so, rope was very cool, but I think just too much air-control (too much drag/air-resistance potentially?), wall running is very well done

(Sidenote: I think I'm judging this harsher than I normally would, just because it's such an awesome game otherwise  )

@korzhik Ok thanks, I managed to progress to the finish of the first level now. My problem was that I didn't know the hook would pull you towards the yellow blocks.

But oh boy, it feels rather punishing to be put back to the first level after failing once in the second.

@amunonra Yes, we didn't have time to properly implement the checkpoint system due to deadlines. We had to sacrifice it in favor of polishing other mechanics. What are your impressions of the game? (Leaving aside the lack of checkpoints)

This is probably fully a skill issue, but I couldn't figure out how to progress after the 2nd red guy after the tutorial. It seems like I'm meant to go up, but I can't really see how, not to mention even getting up the wall feels like luck, I couldn't find a consistent pattern for getting up there.

Really cool concept, just wish I could figure out how to engage with it more!

@hank-ather try looking up, there will be a yellow thing there that you can grab onto with the right mouse button. The tutorial includes a panel that teaches this mechanic, but we've found it's often overlooked. That's our mistake.

Super fun on the movement side. I love games like neon white so this is very much like that. Progressing level 2 was quite annoying with having to do level 1 over and over again to get it to again, also the start door opening inwards instead of outwards made the restarts take a long time. I think having the angel at specific points in the level or a specific time would have made it much more interesting. It randomly deciding to start while grappling is rough. I would have liked that mechanic much better if it was something you could plan for. My game also has some crazy momentum stuff in it so that was my favorite part by far. I also found it better to skip wall riding when possible since it actually slowed you down by quite a bit so i tried to maintain my momentum by skipping them. I read that you didnt get a chance to implement checkpoints, but I did get some crazy speeds and skip large sections of level 1 since I had to do it so many times so that was a cool side effect at least.

@sirred Thanks for the detailed feedback. We designed the levels with plenty of skips and moments where you can gain a lot of speed to add variety to the levels. A little secret: if you time a wall jump while on a wall, you can get a significant speed boost.

this was fun! i massively suck at parkour, meaning that i kept dying trying to hook myself up to the ceiling, but other than that even i enjoyed the game! at first look the graphics feel underwhelming, but they're actually just what the game needs. and thank god for the tutorial, one of the rare times when it is executed well on ludum!

Very fun parkour game. Figuring out what the most efficient route was had me hooked, although I'd appreciate it if the game let me retry quicker after I died.
