Fruits? by PetitLu

[raw]
made by PetitLu for Ludum Dare 58 (COMPO)

Welcome worker! Today you will learn the essentials of fruit gathering.

The queen kindly asked all workers to collect fruits. Don't disappoint us...

Don't even try to put you headphones on, there's no sounds :)

All code and art has been created during the 48h jam.

The Gimp files I created for the art are all available on the source repository.

Really polished game and easy to play and understand! Insane effort for a compo, if you had managed to add some extra juice with some sounds this would've been even more satisfying!

@osh-studio Thank you! Gosh you're right. I wish I'd have just a little bit more time to add 3 or 4 sounds, and some VFX too, and some levels, and some fruits types, a music as well, and anim... Ah too many ideas. I hope you had fun playing!

That’s such a cool idea! With a bit more polish, it could easily become a worthy successor to Peglin. I managed to beat all the levels - even the one with 200 fruits. So when robots take over our jobs, I guess I can always become a professional apple picker! Great game!

Amazing! This was so juicy, and the bitter sweet feeling of seeing all the lemons go right past my basket got me hooked for all the levels

Neat idea, with more juiceiness and sounds etc, you could see it being pretty satisfying in that candy crush style dopamine hit of things triggering other things to give you more and more points. Some nicely drawn art there.

Great fusion of mechanics! I love that this game has a core idea and pushes it to the limit. The art is also very pleasant

very nice! big plus adding web, fullscreen and gameplay support. made use of all three.

spent way too much time juggling a single fruit on my cart to get couple of extra fruits :D

the last level was my favourite because of the bounces you could get using the branches and the cart!

I understand this was a jam and we only had 48h but a lot of expansion could be made on the gameplay; more levels, different elements on levels like extra bouncy walls or fire, more fruits with different properties, melons that are bigger and heavy, bananas that bounce strangely, grapes that split into many. could also add upgrades to the cart, size and speed and so on :)

anyway, good job, I had fun!

Thank you all for your comments, it means a lot!

@bereg Peglin was definitely a reference along with Peggle. For some reason I just thought I should make a game about collecting fruits and these two games came to my mind.

@upint hehe, gotta be sure not to miss any of these juicy fruits!

@ansjofaye I did not think about William Morris while making the art but now that you mention it, it makes so much sense, especially the color tones and branches.

@automatonvx thank you, I definitely took too much time on the art and not enough (none!) on the sounds :P

@torte478 @mdotedot thank you both

@notime4games the gamepad felt necessary for me to nail the controls and have a cosy/relaxing vibe (is it cosy though? ). I had so many of these ideas written down and so little time to make them realize. I'll add this bananas idea to the list in case I ever plan to add content after the jam (maybe I could even make the bananas explode into many and add worms into the game, I'm sure it has never been done before)

Cool idea, fun and original! Lots of potential for expanded content, too ;)

It reminds me of the old Nintendo Game & Watch devices, with an interesting physical twist. The controls are a bit tricky on keyboard, but it should work great with a controller. Nice work!

Great base for a full game, both in gameplay and aesthetic. "Do one thing and do it well" is something as a game designer I should think about more often :P

For the keyboard users around here: Left/Right arrows to aim, A/D to move cart, Space to shoot (from what I found out)

How do I switch level on a keyboard? I really enjoyed the concept and the tutorial level so if you let me know how to try the others I will

@linus-lindberg use the mouse to click the LT/RT buttons :P

Don't know how I managed to forgot to add these for keyboard when I making the inputs for gamepad

Sorry I collected so many fruits that It broke itch.io . Im just that productive, and I have objective evidence for that fact now. Long live the queen, and her reasonable taxation system¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really good game! I like the juggling/bouncing system where you can use the edges of the basket to keep objects in play. When I saw Vikfx's comment, it reminded me of the Nintendo game and watch too! There was one with folks jumping out of a burning building and you had to move a trampoline to make them bounce to safety. Its transformed into a nice risk/reward mechanic in your game and adds a little extra depth and interactivity to the game than it would otherwise have. The art is clean and clear as well. I don't know if it is intentional but it gave me a steampunk or Fantasy-Victorian vibe. Music and some kind of an end screen would have been nice but there is never enough time for everything with the tight deadlines so it's understandable that you decided to focus on the other stuff. Great work over all!
