Collect-o-maniac by Surfa

[raw]
made by Surfa for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

Oh boy do you love collecting things. You know like bugs, stamps, rubbish, hidden treasures, gambling winnings, and debts for the Mafia. All totally normal activities.

Complete tasks within a time limit to grow you collections!

We recommend the desktop builds of the game. You may experience some mouse control issues when playing in the browser! Web build on itch.io works best with chromium based browsers. On Firefox the mouse sensitivity seems low.

Controls: * Mouse * Escape - Pause menu

Music/voice/effects volumes can be adjusted in the main menu and the pause menu

All art, music, sfx and code created for the Jam. From the twisted minds of:

  • Surfa
  • Mista Giggles
  • Tommo

Linux:

Linux build has been tested on fedora 42 with kernel 6.16.9-200.fc42.x86_6. Your mileage may vary.

Extract executable from tgz file (tar -xvf collect-o-maniac.tgz) and launch as normal. You might need to chmod +x the file to be able to execute the file.

What a nice weird game. Managed to complete everything on the first go except the gun because I couldn't pick up the rod. Points for great audio design.

*God bless you guys* — I laughed so hard! Thank you for making my day.

The mini-games are really funny. Though, if I nitpick a bit, some are super easy while others are really hard — I’d love a bit more balance. For example, in the one where you’re supposed to pick up trash with a stick, the stick mostly just scatters the trash instead of helping collect it (at least for me XD). But I think that’s because of the crazy controls… just don’t tell me my hands are the problem :D

Also, the art style is cool, and the voice acting too — great job!

We’d be happy if you check out and rate our game too ^-^

Well done. I love the art style of this game. Humor and voice acting is top notch.

The hands were the worst (especially the marbles), but the game was merciful since it gave me some tasks that were doable. I appreciate that.

The audio design is divine.
The number of mechanics per square meter is astonishing!
And how often I laughed! The stamps were my favorite part.

Excellent work!

What a weird bunch of minigames. I love the kinda cohesive art style but still all of the games felt like their distinct art style. Most of the games were pretty intuitive to play but grabbing the barrel scrubber was hard and i was slightly confused by the metal detector game first time. Punching felt really satisfying xd

@6knowledge: Thanks for playing our strange little collection of games. I wanted the player to have to grab the end so it doesn't stick all the way the barrel but I think in hindsight I should have made it easier to grab.

@solvenoff: Yeah difficulty levels were all individually done and there was no real consistency. I originally made the stamp mini-game way too hard. So hopefully all the games were completable at least once.

@gamebuilder: If you played the web-build were you using Firefox by any chance. I found that this made the two 'arm' based games a lot harder as it seem to affect the mouse sensitivity.

@sylf: Thanks for playing our game. Glad you enjoyed it.

@harujam: Thanks for playing glad you enjoyed it.

@wouterk12: Thank for the kinda comment.

@prunus-padis: I think, especially with Jam games, it is very easy to overlook stuff that is not that obvious to most players as you have spent too much time developing and playing the games over and over. I think the two games you highlighted were probably the least explained in terms of gameplay.

@nanaschi1984: Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed our voice 'acting'.

Impeccable sound design and tons of fun. Reminds me of Dumb Ways To Die without the dying part. The amount of content is staggering. I can see every team member had a hand at the graphics, and I think that brought a lot of charm and positive chaos.

I don't know what kind of dystopian monstrosity of a game I just experienced but I did play the entire thing. Don't really know how to give feedback on that... maybe that means it was perfect?
The constant conga drum in the background was a bit grating, but again, was that part of the art?
Well done boys, you've made me question reality.

🤣 What an absolutely wacky and wonderful entry. The silly voice lines easily doubled the enjoyment! I'm happy to report that I was able to collect 21 medals. I'm glad you didn't need to get a gold on every single game, because I definitely struggled with the marbles one, and the spiders seemed impossible for me past silver. I think my favorite was slapping the mustachioed man! He better give-a-me the mo-ney!

My only nitpick is that the music got a little repetetive after the first 10 or so mini-games. I did see the option for selecting a music track in the menu but I only saw the one track, so I'm not sure if there was a way to change it that I missed. Not a huge deal though, everything else was spectacular in a strange and amusing way.

That was certainly something! I am impressed so much was packed in and was still really fun. The gun minigame confused me the first 2 times I got it, other than that the games were pretty intuitive.

Love me some microgames!! This artstyle was so unhinged, but every minigame meshed together really well. I love how the music is always slightly different between them, and each of them also has a slightly different way to show how much time is left! The difficulty felt just right, didn't struggle but also had to pay attention. Very funny and cohesive entry!

Very unexpected, but I couldn't stop until I collected 21 badges for my collection! Only failed a couple minigames along the way, very well balanced difficulty curve!

I had a lot of fun playing, I really liked the art and the voice acting, I played until the end. I didn't expect to find a coffin with money, a tick, and a marble. My PC almost exploded at the end, the physics glitched xD

Want to say thanks to everyone that has played the game and left a comment we appreciate it very much.

@jordan-neff: Yes the music is a little repetitive. We ran out of time. The music choice options is a carry over from the last game we made for LD JAM (hairdivers). We unfortunately did not spent enough time on the backing music. The plan was to have a base track with individual music over the top for each of the games.

@aldenwitt: Yeah we wanted to have more backing tracks but ran out of time. Also we find the music creation the most difficult part of any game jam.

@gaverion: The gun barrel scrubbing is definitely the most non-intuitive part of the game. In hind-sight I wish I made it so you can grab any part of the handle not just the end.
