NOMAD by kukaracila215

[raw]
made by kukaracila215 for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

"Man go into big field. Man see cool thing on rock. Man collect. Good."- Sun Tzu or something idk.

Anyways, NOMAD is a short horror game about a simple man wandering the grim vast grassland of the steppe in search of relics. The goal of the game (and you would never believe it) is to collect relics and bring them to the idol at the camp. Also forage for berries or you'll starve to death and that doesn't sound nice. Oh yeah and the monster. The creature feature. Featuring the creature. He's there too and he doesn't like you OR whatever it is you ae doing with his stuff, so be careful or he'll bite ya.

Notable features: -the spooky creature -the limited inventory (literally your own two hands) -the hunger meter (you shake violently when hungy) -the interactable idol

Controls: WASD - movement RMB and LMB - pick up, drop items in hands or put relics in the idol Spacebar - eat Esc - exit the game

A lot of borrowed assets, models and textures from Sketchfab, Unity Asset Store, Pixabay and many others. Thank you for the contribution.

This was a complete mess

Changelog Day 1: -added wind effect that leads to relics -added an actual ending to the game (fade out to black when enough relics are put on the altar)

Changelog Day 6: -reworked the visual by adding dithering, adjusting saturation and temperature -slightly reworked the creature feature, changing it's AI a bit

I like the atmosphere in this game, especially the fog. Is the monster supposed to do anything besides appearing in T-pose and not moving? Apart from that, I couldn't find any relics other than the first one in the camp. All I could find were stones and bones :D

@evil23 thanks for the review! We did actually have a couple unfinished spots in our game like the complete lack of any ending entirely. But now you can find relics easily with the wind particles so it's not nearly that impossible anymore. The monster is indeed this giant t-posing thing, but it does have a couple different states that appear more often the more relics you get.

I liked the atomsphere, the way the audio was done was great and kept me immersed. I did start to get worried when I found the first item and realized I walked very far and didnt know my way back. Otherwise great job!

Its atmosphere looks pretty cool. It’s a smart design idea to explore around a center, but it seems that there is still a lot of scalability. Please keep working on it!

I like the same thing as most people do:
Games atmosphere is on another level, while having 'good lore' and pretty good sounds!

I think you didn't make a game, but a beautiful location where you can just wander around. The visuals are undoubtedly one of the best I've seen so far. But how should the player know where to go and what to collect? It's also unclear why the player dies, as if I chased away the scarecrow but still died. Additionally, it's frustrating that a game where you can die simply closes.

I got so lost that I didn't even encounter the enemy. I liked the idea and found it enjoyable.

Got the Pathologic experience. Is this finally the new bachelor's chapter? :D
Anyway, I liked the graphics and the sound. Thank you for the work done!

Cool game. The sound and the vision of giant scarecrow drove me walked towards somewhere I don't know for minutes.

The game has a nice visual, but it's completely unclear what to do in it. I spent 10 minutes running around, but I still didn't understand what the game wanted from me.

Couldn't get the itch.io build to load on any of my browsers, weird.

Just for future reference, from the rules: "You’re free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but we ask that you OPT-OUT of the respected voting categories (Graphics, Audio). You can opt-out of a voting category when you submit your game."

I have full my pants. Is that what you wanted? Very scary game. I think the goal you set has been achieved.
The atmosphere and sound are top-notch 10/10. Theme has been reached. I want more!

Wow! The graphics are stunning, and that tall monster in the background gives the scene an incredible atmosphere. Truly impressive. The game fits the theme perfectly. It’s true that having a short tutorial or an initial guide to learn the controls would be helpful. Other than that, my sincerest congratulations. This is a high-quality entry. Great game!

Nice atmospheric game, but it's rather confusing.

@6knowledge you are completely right, sorry, we definitely did not give our submission enough thought. Thanks for bringing this to our attention

Thumbs up for the atmosphere — and that T-posed monster honestly made me laugh more than it scared me 😄

But the mix of 2D and 3D elements — respect, I really like that style.

It wasn’t clear at all that there’s a hunger mechanic; I only figured it out from the description. And the fact that we start shaking when hungry felt a bit strange too :D Maybe I’m an alien — do humans really shake from hunger? Who knows XD

@solvenoff thanks! We are still working on fixing and polishing parts of the game, like the monster or the hunger mechanic! And speaking from personal perspective and experience - some people really do shake from hunger. Personally it is mostly low blood sugar, but there might be some other examples

It's a very atmospheric game with well-chosen sounds. However, it lacks a map or markers to help you navigate. Overall, I really enjoyed the game.

Mood is done very well. I love hands animations, especially how they communicate that there is an interactable object in front of the player. Unfortunately, I found only one relic and couldn't find a proper place for it. Then I ran into steppe until reached a death screen (I guess).
