Pizza Dash by kdx

[raw]
made by kdx for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Pizza Dash is a puzzle platformer set in a post-apocalyptic world where you, Jean-Luc, need to deliver pizzas for a living.

You will have to traverse dangerous terrain in order to deliver the precious pizza to the door of your customer.

Controls

  • Left/Right: run left and right
  • Z: jump, hold to jump higher
  • X: directional grab, aim with left/right/up/down
  • C: throw pizza (once obtained)
  • R: restart the game
  • F (Windows version): toggle fullscreen

Alternative bindings: WASD + JKL

(gamepad players, we recommand AntiMicroX, works with web build too)

Game is very cool! design, sound, mechanics - pretty well!
id like it more if controls be another - e to grab and space to jump - my fingres cant press wasdzx - too small space for them!
Ty very much - one of best games this jam!

Awesome graphics & music! Player control could be a little tighter, but I still made it to the end & enjoyed the experience. Also miku

This game was very fun! I was not a huge fan of the controls but I got used to them, also, that last level was SO FUN! Most of the games in this jam feel too easy, so I love that I finally get to play a challenging game!

Had a lot of fun playing through this!

- The art is fantastic
- The game really opens up once you get the pizza. The way it interacts with the grab is really cool.
- Decent difficulty
- Regular checkpoints were a great idea

For possible improvement ideas:

- I found the controls quite hard to use. Might be worth tweaking around with the player's speed/jump height/gravity to feel a bit snappier. The button combinations are also quite tight- could the grab be mapped to a mouse button to make it easier to do e.g. the jump and down grabs?
- I would have loved to have seen more levels making use of the switch mechanic!

This is great! The art style is distinctive - I like the spikes (although I can't always tell where their hitboxes are). It's a fun mixture of platformer mechanics. I wasn't great at grabbing onto things but that will come with practice I'm sure. There was just a liiiittle bit too much inertia on the character coming to a halt - it was really easy to accidentally run (not jump) into hazards.

Very strong contender! Graphics stand out a lot, and work together with quirky animations for the overall enjoyment for eyes.
I also appreciated the game being hard enough. At first it was even harder, but after I realised that grapling hook goes in straight lines from where you threw it (and not moving with the player, as expected) it got a bit easier. Although controls are a bit floaty, and I would love faster X-acceleration (and decceleration).

Also music bangs and does not ask to be turned off, that's always welcomed :)

P.S. Hope our clients don't mind some footprints on their pizza.

thank you all for the comments and your valuable feedback <3

@dearkh: i didn't indicate it yesterday 'cause i forgot, but if you move with WASD you can use JKL instead of ZXC!

Wow the art is so pretty! Such striking colours, and so much detail everywhere! I really liked the final puzzly thing with the pizza, and wish that final level was a bit more fleshed out to make use of that mechanic better. The timer on that was a great change of pace, and I was hoping for just a bit more, it was very fun. There was a few times that I felt I couldn't possibly beat a section, then surprised myself when actually hey, I did beat it, what a great feeling. The music and sounds really brought it all together, excellent little game!

The team striked again, well done guys !
Very interesting mecanics, the only downside is that I suck at it and cant get past the first pissa level :sob:
Adding controller support would be awesome (w/o antimacro)

I've already commented, but I wanted to comment again: even after seeing lots of other games, I come back in my mind to this one. It is somehow stuck in my brain rent free. The character's funny jump. The hard level design and mechanics. The color palette. The music. The flying pizza. Oh god, please make more, I want to play more of it!

Cool game! Nice are and feel, I like how every level a new mechanic is introduced.
The game is not too short and not too long, platforming was a bit slippery sometimes but eventually I got the hang of it was able to solve the game.
Great work!

Really cool platformer. Way too hard for me though :frowning:. I think part of it is that the character does feel slippery to me too, but the ample retries and frequent checkpoints helped a lot. I think what might have helped is if at every turn there weren't spikes, like at least in the beginning.

The art and music are fantastic!

Pretty delightful, graphics were nice and music was great. I'll most likely listen to the soundtrack and see if I can find more by the maker of this track, I enjoyed that song quite a bit. Controls were a little tough once the hand got added and I might try and go back to find the "journals?" I think it was, but not sure if there will be a reward for those

I liked it, especially the music and sound effects which give very good sensations.

The mechanics are well developed. With a little more time, this video game could become a fun product.

Congratulations!

Great game! The movement is a little "weightless" for me, but the grab and throw pizza mechanics are really good. Pretty awesome level design as well, making the player learn the mechanics to proceed. Solid entry, great job!!

Such a good looking and feeling game, nice work! The aesthetics and sound design were on point in terms of building an atmosphere and mood, loved it. The gameplay took a while to get used to, especially with the movement and grappling. I found the movement to be quite heavy, but really flowy when you got the hang of it. The grappling however not so much, even after beating the game (with a reported 0 deaths, fun bug ) I still don't understand it fully. I also found the graphics, whilst gorgeous, didn't fully convey where to go or what to do next? I think a little bit more guidance around a level would fit the flowy heavy movement. This was fun though, and I did play all the way through it, nice work!

this had it's own little charm, the low gravity gave me some nostalgic rayman 2 vibes and it kept my hook longer then i think was reasonable  good entry!

The soundtrack slays. I also enjoyed the humorous sounds. Grappling felt good, once I figured it out. All in all, locomotion felt a bit too heavy for my taste.
