📖 Game History

Yet another space exploration game aka Starvesters 2D 🚀

The jam started in the night for us as we are in Paris. We rapidly converged ideas during the night and started to build the game the day after. About 1day in the making of it, we randomly thought that our game really resemble our previous game made for a Ludum Dare, driving a ship across planets with cool visuals! We thought of adding this easter egg somewhere and it finally happened to be in the game title, welcom to the Starvesters Cinematic Universe, SCU.

Godot4.0 x CSharp x HTML5 = đŸ’Ĩ holy fit đŸ’Ĩ !

We did originally chose to try godot for the first time so we started with Godot4.0.2 We wanted to build as a web game as we know more users will try our game and it avoids us to compile the game for every platform.

In the middle of the jam we decided to build to check everything was alright, and POM POM POM... We discovered that using CSharp for Web with Godot4.0 is not yet available, at this moment we were really disappointed and then came the idea of rewritting the code we had to GDScript (we did not have much code to convert, like 470lines of c# at the moment).

The other idea that came was, why not looking if there exist a tool to automate that ? We did note found anything usable, then we thought, well, why not right it ourselves ? That's how we decided to create a transpiler to transform C# to GDScript. Hopefully both languages are really close semantically, also their typing system works almost the same. The thing works and is opensourced so give it a shot and do PR and post issues !

Our game is currently built with the following process : Godot4.0 C# → CSToGDScript → Godot4.0 GDScript → Web 😀

LOVE this concept. Space courier delivering between planets! I wish that the walking on the planets was a bit faster since that's not really what I'm excited to do in the game. If walking around the planets at large scale is relevant, I hadn't played long enough to experience that -- but it would be a great addition to have large explorable planets. Imagine traveling to the depths of one planet to collect a rare ore that should be delivered to a weird mole-person on a different planet. That sort of depth / world-building could be very very engaging :D

Loved the concept! The art direction was awesome as well. I had fun with this one! Nice to encounter a fellow Godot C# user :)

This was really good! really liked the idea of flying between planets and then getting to explore them! only thing i would have liked was to be able to move a bit faster on the planets.

Great concept, I loved it !!! Walking on the planet is a bit too slow and can be a bit frustrating, but I loved the experience overall !

Fun idea. One thing that would improve the space travel part is zooming out the camera a bit, because I found it very difficult to avoid asteroids. Good job on the feel of each planet!

Really neat game, music and graphics really contributed to make the game feel special. Kind of reminded me to Outer Wilds in some way. Would have liked it to be a bit longer and with more things to do.

Porcelanius was my favorite planet, with all the worm-like things popping in the foreground. Nice idea to have a photo of the team at the end. We should start doing that for our games as well.

By the way, we had the same issue with Godot 4 C# and Web exports, good thing I tried to do a web build a few days before the jam and noticed the lack of support, and ended up using Godot 3 instead. Your transpiler tool would have been really useful

I really love the vibes and mood of this! I loved the music and muted colors, and the pixel-y designs for the little guys. I don't know if it's just me but I kept getting lost in space! But I almost didn't mind because it was so beautiful there.

Great game. I wanted to play moar!
I did mine in GDScript with Godot 4 and while I could post to itch.io, I can't put it anywhere else.

The design of the planets are really good! And well done with the mechanic of navigation into the space.

The atmosphere is amazing! It's touching to travel in space experiencing various landscape in different planets. I love the design of every planet. The soundtrack also goes well with the environment.

The asteroids might be a little too random and it was really hard to travel at the beginning. But soon I got the hang of it and it starts to be satisfying. Nice job after all!

Awesome graphics, I love the look on the planets and the concept is really nice.
The navigation part can be quite unforgiving. Maybe some health/repair system could have made it a little less frustrating but I got better after some retries :D

Neat pixel art! Each planet definitely cultivated a unique vibe. The space navigation is fun, but walking around on planets felt a little slow by comparison. Good job!

Where to be begin. The idea is quite trivial, but the implementation really drives this one forward. I love the different planets, the the option to actually go into space, the button layout which reminded me of old arcade machines, the soundtrack that just sucked me in or the nice surprise at the ending. I felt reminded of other atmospheric games about calm space exploration, like No Man's Sky or Astroneer.

It's just beautiful. Great work all of you.

Great game, I was struggling with the asteroid field but once I slowed down to take my time I made it. I thought the clouds looked a bit out of place with the rest of the art style but just my opinion. Well done!

Concept is pretty classic for this theme. Your strongness is in the mood. Each planet has an identity. Music fit well with the space travel. Once in space , it's not easy to avoid an asteroid that goes directly in your direction, there is perhaps something to work on the visibility or maneuverability of the ship.

Beau travail pour un bon jeu !

Nice graphics, but between the instant death in space and slow walking on planets. the gameplay is just frustrating.

The graphics for the planets were really cool, I liked the eyes moving and blinking and the trees swaying. I echo the issues with the speed of walking and the danger of flying. It felt like the most efficient way to get money way doing the mission on the home planet, which was fairly uninteresting, but atmospheric.

It's not entirely clear to me where to go and what the specific objective is in the game.

@denka Yep you're not the first to tell us, the goal is to deliver packages, you can pick "missions" on the crate located on the right side of the planets, and the person to deliver at is always on the left side. You have to gain money to reach the end of the game !
