Story

Unfortunately, you didn't pay attention to the itinerary today and didn't notice this street was in it. It's a lovely street by day, but kinda empty as night approaches...

Changelog

May 5: Fixed issue with players not being able to select Yes/No when Hitchhiker lady talked to them. Confined mouse to screen to avoid problems for players with multiple monitors.

How to play

WASD / Arrows - Move

F / Left mouse button - Drop package

Ctrl / Right mouse button - Run

Enter - Choose dialog

Esc / Start - Pause

Move near house doors and drop packages, once you're close to the right house, dropping action is enabled.

:warning: IMPORTANT :warning:

In some cases it seems Unity gives priority to game pads and the keyboard movement does not work, unplugging and reopening the game seems to fix it!

Nice job! It's pretty nerve-wracking when she starts chasing you. I will say she's a little goofy looking but én-general the game looks good and controls well. A bit more polish would really put it up there but even so it's a great little experience!

@emily-ttg Thanks! I planned on making her twist her bones while talking to you, to justify the creaking sounds but... I got no time to do it at the end. It was my first time working with 3d models, so I tried to go as basic as possible.

You could actually talk to her ? I just ran the f off whenever I saw her xD Nice little game !

Spooky lil game, always hard making a horror game feel right in a jam but I think you did a great job; especially with you mentioning this was your first time working with 3d models. Great job, Niz!

Nice creepy twist. This hit the theme 100%. I like how it looked. Choosing Yes or No didn't work most of the time but this is a good entry. Great work!

I loved this game! Super fun what a rush. I like that the sticks were hard to see making it challenging to avoid them but not to hard. This game had just the right amount of challenge. It was very well balanced and rewarding. Loved the note pad with pencil scratches on the title screen with the controls and extra tips. Clever! Great work :D

@stalemeat Thanks! When she reaches you and talks, answering no leaves her "stunned", but she'll always try to latch unto you whenever she can! Answering yes should lead to game over

Seems very nice but sadly I can't play, WASD or arrows does nothing

Really enjoyed that, the bright lighting and art-style of the houses at the start of the street lulled me into a false sense of security which made things a lot spookier when certain *things* started to appear :open_mouth:

@liven Damn:/ I dunno what could have happened, you just freeze with the package upon starting the game?

I just have this to say. 1, 14, 9, 40.5. Thanks for the great play. I never did get back to the end of the street

I can't seem to move at all. The game loads up but I'm just stuck looking down the street. I don't know that it matters, but I'm playing on an ultra-wide monitor and some of the main menu text is misaligned.

@rjdrag @liven I just watched a streamer play it, and he had this stuck problem too! He fixed it by unplugging his game pad. It seems Unity gave priority to that input over the keyboard or something like that!
🎤 niz
03. May 2023 · 16:37 UTC
@aloya yeah I didn't sync the movement and the sound effects at the end, I also should have made the steps less louder. Watching streamers play almost makes me regret putting the footsteps.

@beebster-games glad you liked it! Some people thought the game forced you to die, maybe I should have made it clearer that you can escape after the last package

@rjdrag oh, I noticed the UI gets a bit wonky depending on the resolution... didn't have much time to work on that at the end. But it should not affect the gameplay

Creepy. But I'd love to elaborate and see if anything goes fun and interesting, if said Yes. Anyway, the creature appears out of nothing, need to seetle more mood first, then add the creeps, however the whole town seemed fishy at the first glance.

@ardorugus Oh, she just takes your soul if you say Yes. It's sort of like that Kuchisake-onna story, in which she asks you a question! A background story for every monster would have been nice but I spent so much time learning 3d stuff for this one that time was scarce at the end.

@m0zrat Did you check the game pad warning? For some reason Unity was messing with people who used game pad. Unplugging and restarting the game seemed to do the trick!

Damn that was creepy. Nice work! The yes/no option doesn't work very well though, I had to pause the game to see my cursor and click on the buttons. Would be cool if you expanded this into a longer game.

@koyaaaa Thanks a lot! I kinda enjoyed working on a horror game for a change, though I rarely play them due to my hate for loud jumpscares. Maybe I will work more into it!

Honestly this was really cool, but I have a major problem and that was the fact that I really didn't know why I would die sometimes. I read the comments and stuff and apparently stepping on the sticks had something to do with it, and I'm imagining running around also had something to do with it too. Unfortunately, when I played I had no idea that this was the case. If there was a better indicator or your noise level, or even just some explanation saying what you're supposed to avoid other than a very generic text at the beginning saying to be quiet, that could have been nice.

Anyways, the mood of this was fantastic. There were some parts, especially during my first attempts where it was genuinely really creepy. The music and sound effects seemed to fit extremely well and really sold the experience for me. I think if you fixed the gameplay issues I had, this could be quite a cool game jam game!

@mateu Thanks for the feedback! Actually the idea of the branches was to trigger a rabid beast coming from one of the lots. But I had no time to add one that felt fitting to the game, so I decided to just keep the footsteps of a dog-like creature running towards you and then biting. But the footsteps felt too brief, I guess people barely notice them before the bite. And perhaps the footsteps are too loud...

Overall, kind of cool!
Could use more polish.
Camera was jittery, at least with the mouse controls.
The package address changed from 14 to 9 at one point?
I didn't like the insta-kill when I delivered the package to the haunted house.
The shadows didn't reach more than 20 feet down the street.
🎤 niz
04. May 2023 · 21:32 UTC
@fruitflinger Thanks for playing! Yeah, I put the package 9 after the 14. There's a text showing up right after you deliver 14 saying the player mixed the packages, but I think it was too short and people couldn't read it. The idea was to force the player to look back and see the hitchhiker lady! The haunted house activates the last ghost, which pursues you and you have to run. But stepping on branches activates the rabid dog, stepping on a second branch pretty much guarantees you're dead.

well done! I liked the youkai influence when it came to the monsters. only issue I ran into was that I couldn't figure out which key/mouse button to press to select yes/no when talking to her. the art design was good, very creepy at night. great job working in 3d for the first time!

This is what the mood rating is for! Really nice atmosphere. I guess I shouldn't let people come with me. The stick mechanic wasn't immediately obvious to me. Not sure if I would have figured it out if I wasn't told.

I like how the mood slowly changed as you walked down the street.

The way the first statue walked felt a bit jagged.

@cheesepencil I wish I could:/ I battled at the last one hour and a half of submission to make a working web build but to no avail. The game simply didn't accept my inputs for some reason
cheesepencil
06. May 2023 · 17:12 UTC
You don't have to sweat through submission hour to get a port working, the rules are very clear about that:

> Porting (especially to Web or Windows) can happen after the initial 48 hours. The longer you wait though, the less time participants will have to play your game.

Quite atmospheric! I loved how the mood, the light and the whole surroundings changed the closer you got to 40.5. The sfx are quite juicy and well-made/well-chosen. The first time I heard the roar, I literally jumped a bit in my chair.

The fact that the mouse cursor is not caged to the screen in the web version is a bit of a bummer (I see you fixed it in the notes, but I'm guessing you left the web version as originally submitted). Had to disconnect my second display to move around normally. Not a huge bother, though.

The sneaky hints on the main menu screen are brilliant :smiley_cat:.

Very good entry!

07. May 2023 · 23:38 UTC
@fabula-rasa Glad you liked! Did you think the roar was too loud, though? It's my first try at horror and the only single objective I had was to not make a loud jumpscare as I hate them! Didn't help that my headphones died recently so I depend on the monitor speakers (nothing ever gets loud on it).
fabula_rasa
08. May 2023 · 07:09 UTC
@niz I don't think it was too loud. No bleeding eyers or anything like that. Volume level was just fine.
I think it may not be possible to avoid a bit of potential tiny jump scare when you introduce something sudden and incongruent with the environment (in this case, a roar on a street that is peaceful and quiet otherwise).

Interesting game! I enjoyed the vibes and thought it was a unique entry in the jam. The comments seem to suggest I could talk to someone and make choices? Maybe I was too much of a wuss because I just ran from everything until something at the end killed me! Good job on evoking the mood and the fact you've had to walk up the street really sets up some tension once you realise you have to run back down it.
