KnighToad by Wild-Babou

[raw]
made by Wild-Babou for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

This is our first game jam. We had way bigger plans but of course we did not have time to implement all of them. We programmed and created all the assets except for the player controller where we used taro ultimate 2d controller(see links) and modified it slightly.

In the end we created a fun 2D puzzle platformer with some interesting mechanics based on the topic "delivery". The game consists of fully custom pixel art. In our game there are two characters, a brave knight and a toad called Jonathoad. The knight gets the mission to deliver the toad to the princess to reverse its curse and turn back into a prince. During the game you can play as both characters to help you solve puzzles. To combat any enemies that come in your way, the knight can throw Jonathoad at them to dispose of them quickly. Many other surprises may face you when playing the game. Have fun! We hope you will enjoy the game.

Special thanks to: Valentijn van Zwieten (Character artist) Roman-James Zeph (Music Composer)

Very smooth knight movement, like that. Cool idea with the story. Great game.
The only issue i had were some bugs, among others falling under platform:

I liked the game, it was fun but for me it was a bit too hard. I couldn't get to the key and the black knights killed me a lot. I thought, maybe a few lives would be nice? I'll try it again later to see if I can finish it. The Pixel Art is nicely done and the movement felt really smooth

Confusing, somewhat, brilliant concept though, black knights killed me a bit, annoying, but I really enjoyed my time with this one.

Just finished it, great fun! It took me a little while to figure out that you can pick up the key as Jonathoad with `F`, just like the knight does. Generally a very solid experience!

Super fun and I love the lil knight character! Controls feel tight and the game felt just challenging enough. Great job to the team!

Short game, but pretty fun. I love his name, Jonathoad xd

Gameplay-wise, the collisions were quite janky. Cometimes I would collide with nothingness, jumping on the platforms from the bottom would also be cool. Jonathoad didn't damaga enemies, when they were going in the opposite direction and at the beginning I thought that I just can't kill them.

Jolly one, enjyoed the mechanics and the art a lot, though on the art side I'd go with curved tile connections instead of most being rectangles~ otherwise looks great, feels great and plays nice! Lovely work :)

Funny game! I really like the idea of holding and throwing the toad, feels like carrying a bomb, hahahaha! Not there yet, but I will make sure the knight can bring the toad to the princess so that the prince and princess meet each other! Hahahaha

it was a super nice game. there were a few bugs but that's understandable because you made this in just a weekend. very impressive. i liked the story and the gameplay. wish it was a bit longer because i went through it too fast. but overall i enjoyed it a lot!!!

Really cute art and great idea. I found that the collisions were a bit biggy. I got toad stuck in a wall a few times, and also found that the knights didn't always die when I throw toady boy into them.

The music is kinda basic but I found it suited the game really nicely, and once again I absolutely love the art. Really enjoyed this as a quick game and would love more levels and the few issues cleaned up. Super fun, and not really something I had played yet.

Impeccable frog vibes. Music was a transcendent experience and I waited in glee for the croak every time. Gameplay was nice and fun, throwing Jonathoad around to solve puzzles was great. I think the movement speed of the Knight could be toned down some, it was a little hard to control accurately especially as there were some platforming sections. Killing the enemies with Jonathoad was quite inconsistent too, a lot of the time he slightly touched the ground and then didn't kill the enemies. Graphics were great, nice work!

Like others have pointed the collisons have a few issues but overall I think it's a solid platformer. It feels like a good movement, the jump is nice and it's fun just throwing the toad around and I bet there's a cool mechanics that could be added based around throwing the toad. I really liked the music and the art was nice as well. One thing that would have been nice is a way to teleport the toad back to you without having to start the game over if it gets stuck.
