What's The Deal With...? by Robertthebastian

[raw]
made by Robertthebastian for Ludum Dare 53 (EXTRA)

A deck building game where the combat revolves around delivering a "killer" joke to hecklers in your audience.

As my compo entry turned into a jam entry turned into an extra entry I did run out of steam a bit... This is more of a proof-of-concept card combat idea than it is a playable game, (Also a few of the stage (blue) cards don't actually do anything at the minute...)

I will be doing a write-up about my experience this Jam and will upload that in the coming days and hopefully will build on the concept a bit - I think there is a fun game in there somewhere...

Fun! It's a bit hard to read the cards while they're in your hand, and I couldn't tell if you could edit your deck at all, but overall it was easy to understand and the blue/red/green card split made it feel pretty fun. Good job!

Lovely game, I wish there had been more of it. It has all the basics working well and just needs more cards and enemies.

Loved how you converted a comedian's job into cards, especially the clean/blue/dark damage types. You definitely something here!

Really interesting game but it was a bit too overwhelming at first. Being given less cards at once or being explained the types of damage and what the goal is would help. Love deck builders tho and this is a solid jam one

I kinda wish you hosted the game somewhere rather than only use the LD hosting thing -- right now the screen is too small to really read the small text on the cards and I can't make it full screen.

I dig the concept of a meta card game about comedy, without any of the actual comedy, but I couldn't whether my jokes were yielding positive or negative reactions. At some point there was only one Karen left. Is that good or bad?

The comedian's walk animation is hilarious.

Oh my gosh, have you played De Tres al Cuarto from Essays on Empathy?? just conceptually, this reminds me a TON of that game.

Either way, this is a very cool entry, and it would be cool to see it expanded. I love the theming of the card types and the overall vibe of the game world. The music is also great. Nice work!

The walking animation alone was already worth it. Fun little card battler! Nice solution for the theme, nice job!! 👏👏

Thanks for all the amazing feedback guys! I had kind of lost a bit of love for this nearing the end and wasn't sure if it was even a good idea but decided to post it anyway. I think it has potential as a concept and I'm glad some of you guys agree!

@flaterectomy I agree with the hosting thing, there were actually quite a few issues with the WebGL build altogether really, a lot of rendering issues that I couldn't find workarounds for so just ended up removing a bunch of visual features instead, it for sure messed with the visibility and overall cohesiveness of the visuals. And yeah the combat system needs work for sure, especially with regards to the actual flow of combat and feedback. I was running out of time and tried to make a sort of quick visual feedback thing with the callout bubbles but its just a bit clunky really. Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad you liked the concept :)

like the concept a lot, alone the walking animation is awesome ^^. Maybe some croud reaction or actual placeholder jokes would be nice. All in all very nice entry!

I like the concept. It's a great prototype, and a nice start to a unique game. The cards were a little hard to read. Maybe it was to do with compression.

Loved the rooms flying off as you walked through them. As I went through the game I wasn't really sure what it was I was doing or trying to do. Music fits well.

lol curiousity got the better of me and I tried to go back to the start room just to see if the room comes back into place, it did but not fast enough to prevent me from falling out of the world. the idea of this game is really interesting but I found the cards a bit confusing to understand especially at first, I wish there was some king of tutorial or simple guide to get you started, needless to say I suck at this game lol and the funky movement is all that kept me engaged, note to self: I'll never be a comedian

Very interesting take on the theme of delivery haha. I like the overall idea of a deck builder and I think the card abilities were really good. I feel like there might be one too many damage types though. Overall really impressive submission!

Really interesting game ! Too bad some cards doesn't do anything, but the general mechanics are nice :)
Special mention on the walk animation ahah
Would have been great to add numbers showing how much damage was done on the round ^^

Anyway, it feels good trashing some karens, thanks for that :)
