Deliver the torch and keep the fire alive!

Thunder is roaring and heavy rain clouds cover the sky. Four unlikely heroes light up their torches to fight the darkness with bright colors. But the rain threatens to extinguish the flames on their blazing journey around the world...

Will you deliver the torch to its destination and ignite the fireworks? Be quick, pass on the flame, don't let anything stand in your way and don't let the clouds catch up with you!

Light My Fire is a sidescrolling jump and run game.

Disclaimer: No torch carrier was set on fire more than once during game development.

Controls

You can play using arrow keys or WASD.

Jump: ↑ or W

Slide: ↓ or S

Slow down: ← or A

Attack: Space or Q

The rain cloud constantly chases you. Hitting an obstacle or running into a moving creature slows you down. Jump on platforms, slide below obstacles and use your flame attack to clear your path in case of emergency. (Theoretically, you can also use your flame attack to set everything in your way on fire. Unfortunately, this wastes your torch and it will burn down very quickly.)

When the rain cloud catches up with you or when your torch has burned down, you lose the game.

The cutscenes move a bit fast, but overall I loved this! the art work for level 2 is by far my favorite! The "voice acting" of the alligators, whirlwinds, and Romans are amazing, and I loved the ambient background noises too!

I recorded myself playing to provide as much feedback as possible.

Thanks @100th-coin for playing and for the kind words! I watched your video and could really feel the pain of having to read faster every time a new cutscene came in :D We extended the duration so that people now can actually read the text. I will update this in our game description.

i kinda understand the concept ..
and truly have fun with it..
but it's just not that user friendly at all..
because ur character is too fast..
keep it up dude..
i love the effort of the drawing.. but make sure the other obstacles such as wolf, bear, and crocodile can be wake up if we too close..

Funny game, but i'd like more dynamics, it seems too slow and viscous
Sound of dog's barking is awesome 🤣

I got excited by the description and I am really trying to launch it from itch.io but it keeps crashing in my Chrome :(

I must say, your game reminds me of the good old days of Miniclip games! Despite its simplicity, the sound effects really helped me focus on the game. I found myself playing it multiple times, I must have had around 10 runs, and it definitely kept me engaged.

Was the barking your own voice? :)

@snory Thank you for your feedback, glad you enjoyed it! And yes, all the sounds were made by myself, rattling things, blowing over, or in the case of the dogs and crocodiles indeed growling in front of my microphone.

@freakyzelga Sorry to hear that the game crashed in chrome. We found a bug that made the game crash in chrome on macOS and tried to resolve it. For some reason, the game now loads quite some time but eventually starts on chrome under macOS. On Windows we did not find any issues.

I really liked the art in this game, wanted to keep playing just to see to see the next stage. It would be nice to see some more mechanics to keep it interesting but overall i really enjoyed this one

bit silly. the controls need a lot of work, maybe tighten up hit boxes make everything less floaty etc etc. check out my live review at https://www.twitch.tv/scalphamission

I wasn't a very good torchbearer haha. Red riding hood got that fire background beat though.

@hmrpf Thanks a lot! I'd say it was around 100 assets (some of them as simple as sandstone blocks, of course), all frames etc. included.

Good entry, love the story aspect of it really adds a lot to the game. Also impressive to see how many different settings you managed to include in such a short time. Congratulation!

YEAH !
Just finished your game, last level pattern was a blast :)
Great platformer, nice soundesign ("ah wouh, ah wouh" !).
With a nice music theme (and a jump animation), it would be perfect !
The fact that every level is different and get is own atmosphere is awesome, you rocked it !

I really liked this use of the theme! I struggled to get very far in it, but I'm not very good at these types of games haha

I'm super impressed by how much content you managed to fit in! I love the huge variety of level art, and the sound design is fantastic. I wish it had been a bit less punishing, though, I had to try many times to even get through the first level. I think just slowing the rain down a tiny bit would have been a big help for me!

Neat platform runner. Minor gripe: Space is restart level but also throw fire so whenever you respawn you throw a little fire. Might want to switch that to a different button or change it so fire isn't thrown if space bar is already down. I was surprised every time I passed the torch and there was all new art the next level. Music got me in the zone. Great job!

I like the story idea of this runner.

It has lots of content visually, it's nice that you managed to deliver 4 different unique environments. But some of the obstacles are hard to understand if they are really an obstacle at first or part of the scenery. The character running also felt somewhat juddery, as if the cam couldn't keep the same pace as it.

The music was a bit repetitive. Though I liked the spartan warriors scream. The crocodiles sound seemed a bit over the top. It felt like the rain cloud was constantly snarling at me.

The game is quite hard due to the hitboxes. It becomes a test of luck to see whether you'll make it over a platform or stumble on it and die. It's quite punishing, especially in the second level which felt quite long. The cooldown between jumps didn't feel very intuitive either, it seemed to take quite a while before I could jump again. This became problematic in the desert environment as I could do some jumps to go over the platforms but never could time the jumps.

There is also a minor glitch, that didn't seem to affect the game: once you press space to start a new level, it seems to activate the attack with the torch. But it doesn't seem to affect the torch gauge, so not a big deal.

Nice story for this theme!

Fun idea, I like runner games. The movement was mostly pretty good, however I got stuck randomly from time to time.
The sound effects were epic and the graphics were drawn nicely with variety. Good job, overall this is a decent game! :D

The themes and vocal sound effects had me grinning the whole time... I'm especially a fan of the wolf and tornado noises. Difficulty and pacing was good and I genuinely had a good time with it

I liked the variety in the environments and the funny sound effects. At times you could easily get stuck and some of the jumps were hard to make, but I enjoyed the game from beginning to end.

I love the art and the foley work! Unfortunately during the second level the crouch button stopped working and I had to refresh the page and start over to get it working again. The jumps felt a bit too floaty and slow, but overall it's a fun runner!
