Welcome to Dunix: Harvest of the Spice!

As an employee of MegaSpice (MS Corp.), you have been sent to the desert planet of Dunix to oversee the harvest of spice, the most valuable substance in the universe.

But when you arrive, you find that the spice is guarded by giant sandworms wielding swords and that the native Freenix are hostile to outsiders. To complicate matters further, your ship's AI, DALL-E, has begun exhibiting strange behavior. It seems to be using the ship's instruments to perform bizarre experiments and is obsessed with discovering the Higgs boson.

Can you navigate the dangerous politics of Dunix and secure a profitable spice harvest for MS Corp., all while trying to stop DALL-E from tearing a hole in the fabric of space-time with its experiments?

Will you be able to save the day, or will you succumb to the absurdity of it all?

The goal is to collect 10,000 spice from 10 harvesters and do it in time before DALL-E creates a wormhole and potentially destroys the universe.

Credits:

OST, sound effects, model of Freenix, model of the harvester, and the gun model I developed during the game jam.

For concept art and cover images, I used DALL-E 2, and I used ChatGPT to help with ideation and dialogs and story. I used Azure solution to generate TTS voice lines, I downloaded sound of the gun from FreeSound (https://freesound.org/people/Zozzy/sounds/56647/). I reused texture and foliage assets such as sand, palm trees, and grass from my collection of assets (Lost Island). I downloaded font from Google Fonts collection: Raleway.

I used Unreal Engine 5.1.

I downloaded the linux version.
This was pretty good :D

I really enjoyed the DALL-E voice!
It was really fun to have a companion. The only minor suggestion would be to maybe add audio triggers to play the correct audio. I found myself already at the first truck shooting when the audio told me how to pickup the gun lol
Made me laugh.

I got to 3000 spice before dying :(
Is there an easier way to beat the enemies / move faster

@d3kryption It's great to hear that you enjoyed the game and had fun with the DALL-E voice! Thank you for suggesting to add audio triggers, it was initial plan, but you know scope creep :)

The easy way is turn around and run away facing forward, moving backward is 2x slower than moving forward.

Graphics and audio were pretty neat! It would have benefited a lot from some sort of hit effects, particularly since most of what I ended up doing was shooting people/sand dunes.

I died before I found out how to harvest anything. Maybe add some instructions on how to do that?

The FPS was really low, making it hard to play the game.

Other than that, the game looks quite amazing and good job and publishing this! Also very nice to have the AI voice.

@christian-zommerfelds the game has settings, press Esc and it will show setting, you can change video quality and mouse sensitivity. It it UE5.1 with lumen after all. It has to have low FPS. :D

@xandruher You can change the video quality settings in the pause menu, which should help with the frame rate. Thank you for playing the game!

That was... a strange game :-P I found it a bit "slow" with all the walking between harvesters and doing the same 10 times but liked the personality and atmosphere of the game. Congratulations!

Also, not sure if a bug but after getting ~6k I went to a zone where the weapon disappeared and only saw the hand of the character. When leaving the zone the weapon appeared again but I couldn't shoot anymore :-(

DALL-E's commentary was the beast part of the game! The gameplay loop is kind of repetitive, with just walking and going to the freenix harvesting spots. The enemies should have a clearer attack animation rather than just kind of jumping, but otherwise I thought they were fine. Even though it was kind of empty, I liked the atmosphere. The bump map really sold the desert sands! Good work :3

I like the vibe and atmosphere, the AI stuff is an interesting touch. Graphics were pretty solid though the default setting was "epic" which was way too much for my machine and the menu to change it was a little bit finicky at times. Gameplay-wise it felt pretty sparse though, I definitely got lost after finding the first harvester and wandered around in the desert for a while before I found the intended path. Could use some more level design clues to lead the player to the next objective. I eventually just got chipped out by the enemies and died around the 3rd harvester, the game could use some way of regenerating health or more nuance to the combat to make things more fun. Still an interesting experience, nice work.

The amount of work put into this is amazing, the voice over, graphics and humor are well done.
I really enjoyed shooting at the creatures, and I think it would be funny if you havest the spice from them like in Bioshock.

I love dune. Humor and mod are on point. Good use of AI unlike most people though kinda funny given it dune.
