equniox - the harvest moon by Dawnreaver

[raw]
made by Dawnreaver for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

Welcome to the days gone by!

You are the oracle, the seer, the elder of a tiny village that still holds true to the old gods. Will you manage to gather enough offerings before the equinox, the harvest moon? Or will your village fall victim to the whims of the gods and violent bandits?

Synopsis

Equinox is a minimalist puzzle and resource management card game.

The game progresses at your pace, so take the time to think what the next play should be. Once you decide to continue to the next turn, all effects (from events and regular resource gathering) will resolve.

You can use miracle cards to stop bad events from happening. Miracles have an immediate effect, but be careful. Using miracles will increase the tribute the gods want, and they might just stop supporting you all together.

The Tutorial should cover this, so I would advise playing at least the first time round.

A word from the designer:

Hi there :)
Thank you for taking the time for looking at this entry! This is actually the first time that I built a digital card game :D I had some more ideas for additional mechanics, but with the scope of the game jam, I decided to play it "safe".

One thing that unfortunately didn't get as much attention as it should is balancing.

You will face some game sessions that seem quite easy and others that are punishing hard.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy :) Feel free to leave a comment with some feedback, advice or questions!

Known issue: - Balancing :,( [Addressed in separate build] - Running the webplayer in full screen mode will cut off interface elements [fixed] - When setting the webplayer to full screen mode before you start the game, miracle cards are scaled incorrectly [Under investigation] Workaround: Start the game first and then go to full screen mode.

==================================Update========================================== - Fixed cut off elements for webplayer - Corrected some typos - Fixed some cut off UI elements - Added standalone player download - Added a rebalanced version, has weighted events so catastrophic events are less likely to appear :)

Lovely game! Reminds me a bit of "Reigns" games. I really liked the story of it and how it unfolds as you play your cards. I think what could be improved besides what you already mentioned in your description would be to introduce game states to make it clearer when a certain card is played and what visually show what happens (your crop increases, a certain effect takes place, etc). All-in-all - really lovely game. Good job!

EDIT: Forgot to mention - very well done tutorial, good job on finding the time to include it in the game!

@boostas Thank you so much for your feedback! I am glad you enjoyed the game :3 I know there is lots that I could improve :o I didn't have enough time to implement more feedback, so I tried to focus on the things I had. Deffinately need to look into some improvements post jam :)

Interesting but lot less interactive than I expected. Is there a reason to not just play all miracles that just give stuff as soon as possible?

@unentokku Thank you for playing the game! Yes, I would have loved to add more interactivity, but I was lacking the experience. Will deffinately look into this a bit more :)

This is actually an interesting and fun game! I like the different cards and there was a little bit of strategy involved. Honestly would have like to see different seasons but was great either way. One little thing was that sometimes the miracle cards would glitch out and display in the middle of the screen along with popping up for only a fraction of a second when you would hover over them.

@turtleflyte Thank you for playing! Gald you enjoyed it ^_^ Yes I did come across this when the scaling issue (see known issues ) happens, but I couldn't figure out yet why that happens ^^' I do want to flesh this out a bit more mechanically in the future, but your suggestion of more seasons is an appealing idea ^_^

The music was pretty good and I liked the card system. I would like to effect things more since it felt a bit to Rng based but I think this game has potential and is pretty relaxing.

Very relaxing music!

To be honest I didn't get the game, what decision could I make to help winning? In the end I just ended up spam clicking the deck to get to the end.

@christian-zommerfelds Thanks for giving it a shot! I am aware that a lot more balancing needs to be done to make using the miracles more meaningful! I had some coo ideas to make this happen but alas, I ran out of time :D Thank you for your feedback!

Cool concept! I couldn't see all the info at the top in the browser (maybe an issue just for me) so I was trying to keep track of my harvest in my head for a bit! The idea of miracle cards is a nice additional mechanic that adds an extra layer. I think the game would benefit from more cards overall (I saw a lot of repeats), and maybe a slightly faster deal - e.g you could get three events at once maybe, which would make things happen quicker and also add an interesting dimension to the divine intervention card where you've gotta weigh up if it's worth losing the good to get rid of the bad. Good music!

Really cool, I love cultist simulator. For this kind of project you really want a lot of flavor text and writing, also fixing possible grammar/spelling mistakes. It's really impressive and appreciated that you managed to get a good tutorial into this game :) good job!

@adam-burt Thank you for playing and your thoughts on the game! The web player has been nothing but trouble XD When the game has started, you can use the scroll bars to use the full screen button :) Definattly planning to expand more on the gameplay and events.

@nullval Thank you for playing and your suggestions! I was struggling a bit with the screenspace so I tried to keep the texts short ish. Deffinitively love myself some flavour text (been playing Magic: the Gathering since 2001). I also tried to keep the setting a bit vague so the player can choose what pantheon this is about :)

What I liked :
* The story telling
* How it has been kept simple in the design
* How the tutorial has been implemented
* The music

What I liked less :
* The behavior of cards in your hand. It did not show up all the time when I was hovering them.
* I found that the game lacked interactivity. It feels i had low influence on the outcome. Maybe with a bigger variety of cards, this would be different ! :)

Overall, I liked playing the game. Good job !

Interesting game. I didn't feel my actions doing something in the story, that I think it's little bit sad.

@yamzho Thank you for the feedback ^^

"The behaviour of cards in your hand. It did not show up all the time when I was hovering them." <- Yeah I encountered this bug that can happen in full screen mode due to scaling, but was unable to isolate the issue :<

Nice concept, kinda reminds mine. As other stated, it lacks a little bit of interactivity. But it's a well done entry! Congrats!
