Crop Rush by Multipixels

[raw]
made by Multipixels for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

WARNING: Crop Rush cannot save game state on Ludum Dare's game embed. If this is something you care about, I highly suggest playing on the itch.io embed (linked at the bottom of the page).

Ludum Dare WebGL version has remained on V1.2. If you wish to experience the post-jam update, visit the itch.io page instead!

GAME

Crop Rush is a short puzzle game in which the player has to harvest all the crops in the least amount of moves possible. The game is inspired by Club Penguin's Thin Ice minigame.

There are 10 total levels, as well as a "Level Rush" mode that's unlocked when the 10th level is finished.
Try and get as many 3*s as possible and let me know how you do!

CONTROLS

Only mouse and keyboard is supported. Volume can be adjusted in the main menu and pause menu.

Movement: WASD / Arrow Keys
Pause Menu: ESC / R

EXTRA

All feedback is welcome, anonymous comments are enabled if you prefer. This is my first game jam in two years, so my skills were rusty, but I'm happy to have gotten a completed product on time.

V1.2 is the version released for the game jam.
V1.3 is the post-jam version.

Thank you for playing, please enjoy!!

V1.3 CHANGELOG - Removes time from regular levels. (Kept for level rush) - Level # is displayed instead of time for regular levels. - Pause button added at top right. - "R" pulls up the Pause menu. - Key counter added when picking up a key in a level, and permanently in level rush. - Adjusted movement sensitivity.

Chill puzzle game. The music was simple but good. Though, I really wish that there was a reset button.

@accatosh There was! I might have needed to give better indicator though. Clicking the escape button while in the game brings up the pause menu, allowing you to go back to the main menu or restart the game. I'll make that clearer in the future, thanks!

Fun game, nicely executed, good graphics, and the music works really well with it.

nice puzzle game. i started playing thinking you HAD to move over crops only once so i got perfect scores for the first 6 levels before running myself into a corner haha.
the music fits the game pretty nicely.
if i were to change anything it would be the timer, it doesn't seem to be used for scoring but it works against the otherwise calm gameplay

Interesting game, but without some stimulation, single mode will make people tired

@sonicpixelation, @fullmetal-automaton, @rainsong Thank you for the nice comments!

@togo-sepultraut Thinking more about it, I do agree with your remark about the timer. In a future version I'll make sure to remove it, or at the very least make it a toggle. Thanks for the feedback!

@leorototo I've never heard of Quell, but I just quickly checked it out. I'm glad you had fun with the game!

@harmofish Could you elaborate on what you mean by single mode? What could I do to make the game more stimulating?

For being such a simple-looking game, this is a surprisingly enjoyable gaming experience. Nothing fancy, but extremely well executed for what it is, and it successfully induces the "just one more try" compulsion from the jump.

Graphics aren't mind-blowing but work very well with the format, and the sound/audio is simple but effective. The little snip-snip sounds are very satisfying, and the minimal musical backdrop make it easy to zone out (or zone in?) on the gameplay itself.

Well done!

I really enjoyed this lil game! I found myself in the earlier levels replaying to keep to the lowest move count, which was a lot of fun! I also didn't realise there was a reset, by default I tried 'R', didn't think of trying escape! Overall a fun chill game that I got lost in!

@rincs @pete-valeo Thanks for playing the game!

@harlow I got the same comment from someone else about the reset button. I'll make the controls more clear in the future. Thanks for checking Crop Rush out!

Took me a few restarts of trying to complete levels as fast as possible to aim for 3 stars, before I realized it was the move count that mattered. After that I realized it was a puzzle game, not a speed action game. My puzzle brain then engaged and it was really enjoyable trying to plan out my routes.

Nice small scope for a jam, and very well executed. I had no bugs or anything, just good pure harvesting crops! Well done.

I like it, I love games like this. "Level" games where you try to get 3 stars, I always have to get 3 stars. And it fits the theme perfectly!

Nice job! A well balance and thought out game with a fun central mechanic that increases in difficulty throughout. It was a fun challenge figuring out the path for each level - so close to a full set of three stars but fell right at the end!

This was a very fun entry to play! I love having to put thought onto the moves, and the difficulty kept getting harder on a very balanced manner. Maybe just the last level is a bit too much for me personally though haha. Great stuff!

This was a fun one, Thanks,

Felt like the combine was a little sensitive to move (maybe that's a me problem)

liked the challenge of figuring out the route!

Well done

@mhorth Thank you for your kind words! I do agree that incorporating the timer created confusion for some, so I'll make it more clear in a future update about how stars are calculated

@qooorti @alex-de-la-cour @gabrimer I'm glad you had fun! Thanks for playing!

@phillip-scott I haven't gotten that feedback from others, although I'll still take that into consideration! I felt the same way about it at first and modified some movement values until it felt right, but I might toy around with it more. Thanks for playing!

Overall I love the simplistic pixelart style of the game, however I think what would make this concept really good is when you can only move on wheat tiles so that you must always optimize your movement rather than aiming for a star grade. I like the music, it gives a nice chill farmer vibe. I also really like the UI btw <3 ( I am a UI conosiour (however u spell that) )

@jakubbala I initially wanted to do that and couldn't decide whether to do it or not, so I stuck with the safer option. I couldn't come up with a logical explanation for why a harvester wouldn't be able to go back on harvested tiles. Also, since I went along the lines of having to harvest every crop as opposed to having an end destination, that would always force players to aim for what's currently the 3* goal. I wanted players to be able to experience all levels without having to get the perfect path on the previous level, which is why I opted for the star system. Players who want to see the entire game can breeze right through it, while players who enjoyed optimizing each level can also feel achieved when getting 3 *s.

Thanks for the compliments on UI! Most of my experience in Unity is making games with heavy focus on the UI, however the UI design isn't my strong suit. It means a lot to get that compliment, thank you!

I like how it teaches stuff before requiring you to do something more complicated.
No key count or level number would be the super minor complaints I'd have.

Well done simple game with clear graphics. I liked the retro look.

The game genre was not my kind at all and after a couple of levels it felt more like a chore than fun but that's probably just me. Still played it through to see if there was more mechanics to it.

Sound effects were good retro stuff, but the music got old fast and made me want to turn it off.

Overall the game worked solidly and was up to theme. Nothing mindblowingly innovative, but a classical puzzling game with harvest theme and also replayability in the form of trying to get all the stars.
