Inter-dimensional Asteroid Harvester by Deepfreeze
Readme:
Be forewarned, this game is admittedly poorly tested. I was running up against the clock, and I've been a bit ill, so I ran out of time. The game should function alright and be beatable though, but there may be some wonky bugs. I especially apologize for the mineral border sticking glitch.
-=HTML5 VERSION ON ITCH.IO=- Warning: This version is fairly laggy on weaker CPUs! If you are experiencing heavy lag in the HTML 5 version, please download the EXE version.
Controls:
Arrow Keys
Left: Rotate Left Right: Rotate Right Up: Forward Thrust Down: Reverse Thrust
Z: Shoot B: Fire your one and only bomb. C: "Space Breaks" (They're canonically ai-assisted thrusters and retrothrusters to stop your momentum, but not enough time for the graphics there.)
Key rebindings are theoretically possible in the options, but are very poorly tested. Same with gamepad support. I have no clue what the default bindings even are. You have been warned.
Goal: To collect as many credits as possible.
How to get credits: Grab Minerals mined from Asteroids! Defeat Pirates! Clear Stages with time left to get a bonus payment! Patch Notes
v0.0.4b -Original Release. Please play this version, if you are planning on rating the game for fairness, as version C is post-release patch. -Windows Only
Warnings: Crashes on using up/down on any menu, and generally not very stable.
v0.0.4c -HTML5 Support -Menu Crash Fix -Various Crash Fixes -Options text sync bug fixed -Removed bullet hit audio when bullet hits nothing
v0.0.4d
-Sound options work correctly now
v0.0.4e2
HTML5 ONLY
Changed the asteroid collisions from Precise to Rectangular with rotation;
This will likely lower the accuracy of the hit detection, but should have the lag improved slightly.

Only a couple small things—I didn't notice much feedback when I crashed into asteroids, so I thought it was safe (yes, despite familiarity with the original... maybe I'm just dumb haha). A little more knockback, a particle spray, or a more pronounced sound effect would probably clarify this just fine, since I didn't even notice my "shield" text (maybe better represented a a bar?) until it was down to 20/100.
That's all first-playthrough stuff, as I knew what to watch for after that, but it's what came to mind to comment on.
Thanks for sharing, and happy developing!
I'll try and circle back with a review as soon as I can get it running.
Nice GFX.
@falkreon Thanks for letting me know. I forgot how often I had it read from the ini file. Took your suggestion and moved it to itch.io. Had to make some mild adjustments, as a couple lines weren't HTML5 friendly, and there was a error that should have caused the windows version to crash, or at least give me a warning but didn't, which completely crashed the HTML5 version.
Overall great work!
@xaviarrob123 Yeah, I wanted to have it where the faster the collision the more damage/slower the less damage, but ran out of time and didnt quite have the knowledge to implement it quickly.
I didn't feel the theme very much in this game, but the visuals are great and the sound design was well suited. Great work! I hope you're feeling better!
PLEASE NOTE:
* Bugfixes are allowed after the deadline. You can't add new features but if you released and then realized something's not working, I'd encourage people to rate the fixed version. Just be clear about what you added/changed.
* Ports (Especially ports to web) are allowed after the deadline. In this case the download is a much better experience, but don't feel obligated to disqualify yourself for getting the web version working after the fact.
Thanks for letting me play!
The control are a bit stiff but i had fun !
A fun arcade game in the spirit of Asteroids. It's really satisfying to destroy the asteroids and watch them blow up into smaller pieces, and then collect the goods within. The game as a whole felt like it had an amount of challenge appropriate to an arcade game, the pirates especially felt fun and interesting when I realized they were aiming for the side of the screen to shoot me and I could aim at the side of the screen to shoot them.
I'd say the first thing missing from this game is a sound effect that plays when you take damage. At first I thought asteroids couldn't hurt me. I would have also liked to see more drops from destroying asteroids to better fit the theme—plus it would just be so satisfying.
Fun game all around, the screen wrap was fun to play with. I hope to see you in LD 53!

Try it now, I just uploaded version e2, onto itch, which should have some optimizations. Though it does come at the cost of the asteroid hitboxes being a bit jank. FPS is improved on my desktop to the point of having very few issues, but is still utterly terrible on my laptop (which I admittedly hadn't thought of checking until today), and I am not familiar enough with GMS2's HTML5 implementations to fix this further, unfortunately. Ill put a warning tag on the HTML5 version.
FYI my joystick worked perfectly right out of the box with no configuration although I didn't test the bomb button.
nice game, had fun playing it!
