Split-Second Darkness by Edtg

[raw]
made by Edtg for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Introduction

This is my first Ludum Dare game and the first game I have actually (mostly) completed. I made the game with the Godot engine. The graphics and code were all done by me. The sound effects were made in sfxr and some with a broken microphone.

What is the game?

As the lone survivor of some strange event, you must evade monsters that can only move in the dark, which happens to be every 10 seconds when the lights flicker. Reach the exit and don't get caught.

How to play

Use WASD to move and press E to use buttons. Some buttons might require a colour code (which is given to you), just click each colour in order.

The game works with a controller as well except for in menus. I have only tested with and xbox controller, so I'm not sure about others but they should work. Use the left joystick to move and A to use buttons. The colour codes can be entered with ABXY with the colour matching the button.

The controls are also explained at the start of the game.

Changes

6/9/2022: Fixed the buttons in the final level not resetting after death.

Music may improve the feel. Nice visuals and easy controls.

Well done, some floors took me more than one try to clear.

What does the ending mean, though?

A lot of good stuff can be said about this game, I really like the idea, the puzzles are nice, the atmosphere is pretty darn cool as well. Great job!

Though the visuals aren't the greatest, it's detailed enough that the player knows what the graphics represent. The darkness mechanic is cool and creates some really tense moments. Though the player moves pretty slowly, the game did keep my attention. Pretty solid effort!

Great game. It was pretty hard. Nice challenging puzzles. Could use some music. Might be nice if the wires would show that they were active.

Cool little game! I like the idea that the creatures only move once the lights are off. I could see this being a pretty cool action/horror game with some more work! Good Job!

Very cool! I got stuck at the end because it seemed like they wouldn't move unless I was within death range, making it impossible to reach the buttons, but honestly the concept as a whole came out really well. Good job on the art and the sound :)

Ho ho ho. It was quite nervous. The game keeps you on your toes. It's cool that sometimes you need to lure monsters into the open space in order to go further. The puzzles break up the game well. Great job.
