Stop the Eye by squashi

[raw]
made by squashi for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

You play as a sorcerer who has to stop the ferocious eye-beast before it's too late!

Controls - F -> Toggle fullscreen - WASD or Arrow keys -> Movement - E -> Attack - Enter or Space or E -> Ui accept - W-S -> Ui next

How to play - You can attack by pressing E - Check out your Health on top-right corner. You are Blue and monster is Purple. Whoever surpasses the other one wins - Every 10 seconds - 2 bullets will be added to your ammo. You can see the amount of bullets you have at the bottom - 3 pillars will emerge, existing ones will disappear - Monster will send projectiles at you. Tip: destroy Red pillar - Each pillar has a different effect upon it's destruction based on it's color - Yellow pillar: gives you movement speed for 10 seconds - Blue pillar: adds 3 bullets to your ammo - Red pillar: small aoe explosion, destroys enemy projectiles - Purple pillar: sends powerful magic attack towards the enemy, dealing big damage. also destroys half the enemy projectiles - You can destroy pillars by hitting it 2-3 times - You have a limited amount of bullets so use it carefully! Tip: destroy Blue pillar - Your projectiles will move towards the monster so position yourself accordingly

Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/lgZpDvlkDQI

Known issues / missing features - No sound, can't tell the 10 seconds interval - You can go and stay inside the monster, finishing the game effortlessly (please don't do it lol) - You can get stuck in pillar - First 5 seconds laggy/freezing due to shader compilation

wide_ss.png

Tools used - Godot game engine - Krita for 2d art

Theme?? - Every 10 seconds the enemy does an attack and sends projectiles, also 3 random colored pillars spawn. Due to lack of any sound effects or any visual clue about the timer the games relevance to the theme is very easy to miss.

Visually, this game looks amazing. despite looking sort of blobulous all the sprites are really good! however, i had one major problem with this game. This game REALLY, REALLY needs a tutorial (even if it's just on the page, and not in the game!) it took me a solid 15 minutes to figure out what i was supposed to do! this really brought down my enjoyment of the game, as i couldn't tell what i was doing.

however, once i figured out what to do, the game was incredibly easy. the boss went down in 30 seconds, which was no time at all. would've like if it had more attacks (maybe some that could be dodged) too.

@jamersjam hello, thanks for the comment!

i'm glad you liked the visuals, 2d art is really not my strong suit.

i tried to keep the game simple with just WASD and E input so there wouldnt be any need for a tutorial, you would just hit the enemy once, move around and learn how to play the game by yourself but i should've definetly added a tutorial.

also the game balance/difficulty is not great because pillar spawn type is rng and i didn't have time to tune all the rng stuff.

i will add some explanation in the description soon so that others don't get confused as well. also gonna make a small psot jam version to fix minor issues but idk how post jam versions and rating works.

I like the concept and would be up for playing a more fleshed out version again. More kinds of enemies/attacks and pillar types would take it a long way

i was able to beat the game instantly, when the blue pillar spawned right infront of me and i spammed a full volley unto the enemy! 😎

Looks great, but a bit confusing to play. Sometimes I can break stones to get blue things back and sometimes I can break the purple ones to do more damage? It's not clear why I can't do this sometimes though.

Fun little thing. Some more clarification on the pillars would have helped. I beat the game in 50 seconds by standing on top of the eye and the projectiles circling around me.

Good effort!

I really like the graphics, but a few things to note. There aren't any instructions as to what the blue things at the bottom do or what the spikes do. Secondly, you can just stand on the eye and win in 13 seconds.

ehem, i knew that player could walk into the eye-monster but i've never done it myself, it's actually pretty funny seeing that.

i know there are no instructions or tutorials, i can't change the game now, but im writing a **how to play** section now and will upload and link a tiny gameplay video to youtube, hopefully that will help.

also thanks everyone who played it gave feedback!

Very nice visuals, I also like the way screen shake and particles are utilized to make op for the lack of sound. Having the enemy rockets despawn after a while would be nice, as in it's current state you often have to take the hits regardless of what you do.

Trying to combo different pillars and running away from the rockets while getting all the buffs and unleashing all that power next round feels very good, it's a very promising game loop that could easily be expanded further.

kinda unrelated but I don't like the idea of attacking an enemy while they are sleeping >:[

Good game overall, my best time was 62 seconds

@kizilejderha haha thanks, feedbacks noted! i actually attack the enemy once and wait for it to wake up, it's only fair you know

Juice in this game is satisfying. Gameplay is not super balanced but still enjoyable. It feels like it's a great prototype where it could be a part of a boss-battler game. Sounds are in harmony with effects which I appreciate. Thanks a lot for the entry!

Nice innovative concept, but quite a difficult and not forgiving game. I managed to press e by mistake without hitting a stone and it made it really hard. But overall nice game, well done.

This game was compelling enough that I gave it many tries and started to understand the different strategies. Healing when you hit the eye makes for a fun "tug of war" dynamic! I think it's a bit too easy to run out of ammo - I ended up just hunting blue pillars. But maybe I have more to learn!

Good work!

It took me a moment to understand but I like the concept very much! It needs a bit more balancing (or an easy mode for people like me)
The graphics are simple but effective
