Shadow Nightmare by Kaltic

[raw]
made by Kaltic for LD33 (COMPO)
Shadow Nightmare, or a nightmare of shadows.

You play as a shadow lurking behind unsuspecting souls waiting for the right time to turn them mad. If you can avoid their flashlights and make them truly insane then you may just be able to win.

Look out for chain reactions. Raving lunatics can make even the most sane people mad.

Move along walls and jump between them to get closer to your prey!

Controls:
Move - Arrow keys
Spacebar - Jump between close walls
E - Attack a targeted person (must be within range)
ALT and Enter - Toggle fullscreen

Tools Used:
Engine - GamerMaker Studio
Audio - BFXR
Art - GIMP 2.8

Fun game! lost once, but got it the second time :D It's so satisfying when you get a good chain reaction!

Once I figured out that I was stuck to the wall it was way more fun. Not sure how you could make it more obvious.

I think a highlight on the wall that you are currently attached to could have made the central mechanic more obvious.

Good Game! Way better than mine haha. Did you use the free version of GameMaker? If so ill use it next time.

@Somfin - Definitely. I focused on other stuff and it was a bit too late before I attempted to fix that issue. I tried modifying where the player was and that just didn't work (or broke too much).

@haloguy397 - Yep, free version.

Neat! Controls feel a bit wonky - if instead I kept moving along the the same wall around a corner as long as continued holding a button, it might feel really smooth.

Really innovative idea, and pretty well balanced! I feel as though the game moved a little slow -- speeding player and enemies up might not be a bad idea, and the game started to drag near the end (especially as it's a bit too easy right now). Soundtrack really got on my nerves, but the sound effects were good.

Intresting. Harsh images and style, but also have a lot details made like the fail sound, all the little animations.
The game could be better is have some focus, like a powerful pickup somewhere or a critical enemy.

I like the mechanic of the chain reaction, it wasn't necessary to use, but was a nice addition. I would love to see some level designs were you had to think through the level layout and use the chain reactions specifically to hit all the humans (for example, placing a human far enough out of range that the only way to attack is through a chain). Other than that, the controls and gameplay were smooth, though if you play cautiously it's a fairly easy game. I will admit though, balancing a game with this small an amount of time is super hard.

It took me a bit to get used to it but it felt satisfying when I finally got them all. Good work.

I was confused at first. But once I understood the objective, i found very interesting. Metal gear meets stuff of nightmares. Nice. Congrats on submitting your entry!

Nice. I concur what dalbinblue says about level design. Could be a great action puzzler. Thanks!

I really loved the mechanics for movement, hugging the walls is a really cool way to move around. A slight increase in player speed and the ability to continue moving around a corner while holding a button would just give that little oomph to controls. All in all a really cool idea & game.

Very fun game! Unique mechanic, and very well executed! Jumping is a little tricky at times, and takes some trial and error to get to the correct wall. Overall I enjoyed this entry, 5/5 for fun.

It also took me a while to notice that I am on one side of the wall xD
Keep up the good work!

I'm not really sure I understand what's going on, but it sure is mechanically interesting.

Pretty cool idea! Really makes you feel like you're playing a shadow :)

A bit easy maybe, but besides that I really liked it!

I liked being forced to move along the walls. It made me carefully strategize on how to approach the enemies. I think the game was a bit on the easy side. Maybe the e-attack range was a bit generous. Either way, had fun!
