King-Out by KillerB

[raw]
made by KillerB for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

King-Out is based on the real-life sport of Chessboxing. As the name and theme imply, every ten seconds the game swaps from a chess match to a boxing match. The match ends when either player is in checkmated in chess or knocked out in boxing.

Chess Controls: Left-Click - Select/Move Piece Right-Click - Unselect Piece (A work around for selecting the wrong piece)

NOTE: CHESS BOT BUGS OUT, SO BOTH CHESS PLAYERS ARE HUMAN CONTROLLED AS A WORKAROUND

Boxing Controls: Z - Punch Left X - Punch Right Left Arrow - Dodge Left Right Arrow - Dodge Right

Super fun game! This was a great idea! Something I thought might be helpful to mention; if there's supposed to be a win condition, I'm not sure if it's triggering (it's obviously fine if not, we didn't get around to having a win condition in ours yet).

@penguinmunch Thanks for the kind words. There is a win condition, but a bug kept it from triggering. I just fixed that, but you'll have to refresh the page to restart the game. Sigh.

Really neat concept- I only recently became aware of chess boxing so it was fun seeing LD game simulating it hahaha
I love the extra effort to animate the punch-out sequence. The music is a banger too 👍

Great idea! I was a bit confused when the opponent wasn't moving in chess, especially since there's an AI for the boxer. Otherwise solid.

@lunkums Yeah, I wasn't able to get the chess bot working before submission time, so I left the chess segment as two player. I'm going to send an email to (or tweet at) Mike to see if I can fix it or if that would count as adding a new feature. The code is there, it's just commented out.
Thanks for the feedback.

Fun idea, I dig the presentation and sound. Jank aside, I'd love to play a polished version of this.

Really great idea to use chess boxing. Sad that the chess ai bugs out, but was fun anyways.

Good job guys. Making either a chess or boxing game in a jam would be a challenge. You accomplished both. Playing chess against myself was kind of weird...

Switching back in forth between the two messed with my brain in the best way possible :)

Really innovative game! I wish some of the mechanics worked more smoothly (chess bot, anticipation frames for boxing...), but I had a fun time playing through it! The music does it's job fantastically, and I'm having trouble turning it off, so here's a little applause to whoever composed it ()! I've been playing the original *Punch-out* on the Nintendo Switch recently, so this was really fun to try!

A really fun concept of reacreating a totaly real sport as a videogame. I wish chess bot worked, but i totally understand that making a good chess bot in 2-3 days is insanely hard, heck, i cant do that)), the visuals look very good, the music is sick + i really liked that the change in games is perfectly in rythm, overall great job!!

Nice idea and pretty good implementation. Would be great to have the CPU working as playing with outselves sounds weird )))
