Teen Detective Allegra Gumshoe in Temporal Troubles!!! by fizzbark

[raw]
made by fizzbark for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Teen Detective Allegra Gumshoe has once again stumbled into a reality bending plot. Can she outwit her most cunning foe yet... a future version of herself?

This game was hastily assembled over 72 hours for Ludum Dare 51 and it shows.

There's quite a few little unpolished edges, but the game is playable and finish-able. However, the time looping every ten seconds just sucks in retrospect.

So in order to get a reasonably nice experience, hit the 'P' key to toggle the menu as soon as the game starts and crank that bad boy up to 1=10.

There's some handy hints at the end of each loop if you get stuck, and once you've 'solved' the loop you'll need to wait for the loop to time out too*, so take advantage of the time controls in the pause menu.

There's also an overlooked feature where you have to type words that include the letter 'p'. The pause menu opens when you do this, so pretend this is a 4th wall breaking meta-joke - perhaps this whole game is occurring inside the mind of a sentient bear librarian.**

Post jam version on the way, probably with no time loop.* As it turns out, point and click adventures tend to be very measured and patient affairs where having time to linger and think enriches the world and the experience.

Results are going to vary if you decide to fullscreen, please let me know if specific dimensions are bad/good.

*because "someone" forgot to uncomment a test setting when they submitted the final version 15mintes before leaving for work

**this probably makes more sense than the actual plot

*As it turns out, point and click adventures tend to be very measured and patient affairs where having time to linger and think enriches the world and the experience. Who would've thought.

I like the artwork a lot. The 10 second countdown, as it is implemented here, doesn't lend itself well to this genre of game, unfortunately. Even when slowing down the time, the countdown just comes in the way of me wanting to read and enjoy the dialogue (which is quite good).

I have to agree with Shrill here.

There's a lot of charm and interesting dialogue, but the only seeming way to play is to just furiously click through it all, which further buries the lede since I can't figure out what I'm actually supposed to do. Even with the 1=10 debug setting, I can't sit back and enjoy the dialogue like I'd like unfortunately.

I also noticed some dialogues don't lead anywhere, like the "Pretend you have honey" option.

The art is charming and the music fits, the dialogue is fun too. This would be a prime candidate for a post LD version.

I enjoyed this a lot! There's some obvious issues which you've already gone over so I won't bother, but the puzzles were well thought out, there was plenty of humour and the art and audio were great. Flawed but still very fun!

Thiss will be a really good post-jam! As you said yourself, the countdown doesn't let you enjoy the game, but you still need to get shot by your doppleganger somehow... Anyway, you surely need to let the current action finish before your doppelganger appears. This way, at least people will be able to finish reading the outcome.

I did enjoy working out the solutions to the puzzles in this game! The searching for books feature was great, as it avoids the problem a lot of point and click games have of randomly trying everything for an answer. It was a good idea to extend the time for each loop, as ten seconds really is quite short even if you can do a bit in each loop. I would like to see the idea revisited in some way as looping games are fun to play!

A bit more feedback would help to denote changes in the game state. The dog playing with the toy, the coffee appearing somewhere, the books being highlighted in some way. Some audio control would be nice too.
Overall good work, the humor is great!

Funny idea, I think the theme could have been more effective if the time limit were in the context of the flow of the game rather than realtime. Love the art. Nice work!

The dialogues were nice to read but as many people commented the 10-seconds loop was against the best of the game in my opionion, even with the 1:10. It was also hard to know whether I'm going in the right direction and making some progress, some feedback would be appreciated. However, the game has potential and would be nice to play a more developed version!

Great madcap point and click, I'm not sure I can figure it out, but great mood!
