PolyGone by LabToast

[raw]
made by LabToast for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

A 2D platformer where every 10 seconds, you lose an ability.

My first time making a game completely solo, start to finish!

To play, just download the .zip of the game, extract all, and then run PolyGone.exe (a bit buried amongst the pile of files... can you tell I did this in a hurry?) XD

Had some struggles uploading, but looks like it worked out! Thrilled to be a part of LD51!

Completely passed the game, nice first game, but audio is too loud

This is a really nice interpretation of the theme! It's a nice inversion of the classic platformer gradually gaining more abilities formula and there are some well designed levels in here to get some interesting use out of the mechanics.

Nice one!

Great game! Loved charged shot and jump combo. Idea feels deep enough to have at least dosen more levels. If I could change one thing the charged jump indication would be it, just to hard to see sometimes.

Good game, nice mechanics, would've liked it if it was a little longer, but that's just me. gg! 6/10

Some cool ideas here that force you to think a bit. More levels would've been really awesome!

Too slow for me, feels more frustrating than fun. That said, the idea is quite clever. Graphic design is ok but it would be much better without mixing different sizes of pixels.

This is a fine platformer with some original ideas, quite good for a first game. I'm not sure I understand the first power that goes away. It seems like after I lose it, I can't accelerate along the ground, but only sometimes? On that subject, this use of the theme seems good on paper, but in practice it really just means you have a time limit before an essential function is taken away and you have to restart. In other words, I think this isn't really substantively different from just giving each level a 10-20 second time limit. Still, I love the graphics and the audio is decent, too. Good work.

It's a good try of gameplay, with very logical levels. A lot of ways of playing can be developed based on this. The actions of character (as a box) are also interesting

Great game! I really enjoyed the mechanics of charging up a jump or attack! The graphics look nice as well. Maybe reduce the super-jump charge time, as sometimes it can be difficult to make it due to the 10 second timer.

@quinn-patrick that was the idea, yes. The first powerup is basic lateral ground movement. In my testing, I wasn't able to break it and keep moving after it vanished, but it's entirely possible you found a bug there.

Thanks everyone for all of the wonderful feedback! I agree completely with most of the points here, particularly more levels, a more visible jump charge, and better audio balancing.

@madhumster Had I spent half the time learning and twice the time doing, I'd've had that dozen more levels, but this was a learning experience, and quite a valuable one at that. Definitely going to do better for LD52!

Great application of the theme!

As it is right now the losing of an ability functions as a conveluted timer. Would be cool to see puzzles that require the player to be in different stage of losing their abilities instead of it always being 'losing abilities is bad' to fully utilise the core concept.

Really fun game, good work.

First off, your toast icon/mascot is absolutely adorable omg. So cute!!
The game is really cute, and for a first time solo game it is incredibly impressive and it was fun to play, even though I am just terrible at anything platformer related :)

@shaunshepherd yeah, that's what I was concerned about with the mechanic. I had tossed around some adjacent ideas, like for example instead of losing an ability every 10 seconds, you _change_ abilities. I ended up settling on this mostly due to lack of playtesting time. :/

@weefairyfabi Thanks! I'm happy to hear the lil guy's well received. ^ - ^

Glad both of you liked the game!

Really like the concept here! The level design is pretty great, I like how it goes hand in hand with the abilities and how on certain stages you start with a limitation already. It was a little confusing at first figuring out how to use the laser to boost yourself upwards, but that's my only real nitpick. Nice work!

Nice little game! A lot of mechanics to play with, well done.
Loved the use of the theme, wished shooting've been presented sooner so you get more time of changes between the three.

Neat game! I like the concept of losing an ability rather than gaining one every 10 seconds. Makes me more likely to go fast which is fun, and I liked how you creatively used the different abilities to increase the types of movement. Overall good job!

Very cool game. At first i thought i can only lose one ability at a time, but in reality is was a bit harder ^^' Keep it up!

A good entry into your first game jam. Congratulations!

A very simple and challenging game.

Next time, put the instructions in a clearer way so that the players understand more quickly what to do.

I'm an old gamer and I'm trained to dig around until I figure out how to play, but today's crowd doesn't have the patience for that. If they don't get it right away they give up the game.

Congratulations again.

Loved the bullet jumping mechanic,
would have loved to see this mechanic expanded upon!
