Rayna Runs by eeperdeheap

[raw]
made by eeperdeheap for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

You play as Rayna the office girl who got transported to a dangerous dungeon. She will need to reach the stars to claim her victory. To reach them she will need to run and jump!

Remember, the floor might be lava...

Jam notes - First try of a third person action game. - Some minor issues with the camera clipping in certain angles. - Sound effects didnt turn out so well.

pretty fancy title screen and neat music. but i have to say the control is really weird, and in the lava phase the best thing is just do nothing for 10s, i think it might be nice to there are something that can only get during the lava phase

Cool visuals, controls were a little hard to get used to though.

I could've enjoy the game if it was on WebGL, because Im using mac. If you can add it on itch or embed here. Giving you appreciating rating!

I forgot about the theme at first and was getting frustrated. Then I realized that 10 seconds passes and the floor turns to lava for 10 seconds before returning to grass  I think having coyote time would help with the platforming, to give it a little better game feel when jumping last second. I found it frustrating that I couldn't jump onto platforms when starting the jump too close, I'd bounce off them or not be able to get on the platform for some reason. The camera lagged behind too much, I would much prefer being able to control it myself. For a first try at third person it's not too bad! Reminiscent of early third person action games.

The music is kind of repetitive. The camera is a bit clunky (although a lot of coin collector games have the same issue though). The jumping collision when you go onto a ledge is a bit off either because is not any air strafing or the collisions on the player are kind of weird. Decent game. Some room to improve though

Thanks for the feedback @haotian-chen. I had planned to do some crafting/shopping during the lava phase, but I ran out of time and added the heart pickups instead.

Thanks for the comment @khaotom. I couldn't get the camera to both follow you and be manually controllable. Kind of the best I could make it. It glitches around the edges of the arena as well which is too bad.

Fun game, too bad it wasn't designed for PC's :(

I was not able to get onto some platforms that I looked like I should have been able to as I keep clipping onto the edge. The idea is interesting though

This is okay little jam game. I would have liked a bit more gameplay, but it's okay for a jam game. The idea with the lave is fun.

Cool idea there! Sadly, the camera takes too long to adjust and I couldn't reach some of the platforms in level 2 (tried keyboard and controller). I like the soundtrack and the sfx style though :)

Congratulation! You've finished the game on Ludum Dare :)
It has some problems with the camera and colliders, but still pretty fun!
Cheers!

Good job with your first Jam. 3d can be tough, but it was pretty good. Probably could have included a reply button.

The controls are a bit of a challenge to use, which was already called out. I think there are also problems with collision where jumps may not clear if the player is jumping up while near a platform, leading to have to do a running jump at all jumps. Most 3D platformers provide a second set of inputs specific to allow control of the camera, but I'm grateful there was any camera control at all, even if delayed and limited to where the player was facing.

Still, good job with a first jam! The song was pretty catchy, even as a basic tune. Hits a DOS game vibe.

Thanks @davidsheadgames for the feedback. The tune was a last hour addition. Having to run up to most jumps is intentionally, it's called Rayna runs for a reason . I failed to add manual camera rotation control in time. I tried by fixating it to your own rotation but that made me motionsick so I dropped it.

Collisions seem quite broken, you can't jump on a platform if you are too close to it, and sometimes the character makes some little hops on the platforms that avoid jumping!

Aside from that, make a floor is lava platformer game is a cool idea, also your camera is good, well done!

Funny game, reminiscent of "Mario", funny sounds and music, and the character runs funny) At first I did not understand that after 10 seconds the floor turns into lava. And the animation of the main menu is also interestingly done. :)

For myself, LD is a way to learn and to try stuff i never used before or never have done before. Many kudo's for challenging yourself taking a step into 3rd person action and it's a good step. you are getting there. most comments above higlight eveything i wanted to say so i just stick to keep up the good work and keep challenging

Good job! I had an XBox 360 controller to hand so I played it with that, and I was instinctively pressing LT to try and centre the camera. I played it through to the final level, although as other people have said, it can be quite hard to control at times. Just goes to show the amount of work and subtle tweaking that goes into the controls of a proper third-person platformer!

I like the graphics, was very fun to play it, mostly for the funny music.I think you can work on some upgrades. Good job overall. I would like a web version too.
