Low On Power by Tatha

A robot finds himself in a world that doesn't want him to exist. Fighting his journey through an abandoned city looking for the infinite power source.

How the batteries work

Your energy is slowly running out, and you can only hold 3 batteries, each holding power to keep you alive for 10 seconds. The currently used one is displayed with 10 parts, while enemies attacking you can damage some parts of it, reducing the remaining energy faster. Once the current battery is empty, it will be replaced with another full battery if you have one (or you die). Killing an enemy grants you full batteries, but if you don't have space for another battery, the overflowing power will grant you greater strength for a limited amount of time (right upper bar).

Controls

  • Move: WASD
  • Jump: Space
  • Attack: E
  • Dash: Shift

This is really cool! I so desperately wanted this to keep going after the initial few screens. The vibe is great, helped especially by the lovely backdrop and truly excellent music. It's a shame there was no opportunity to expand upon the mechanics, especially since after that first stretch, there is rarely ever the tension of whether you'll find enough fuel. Another minor issue is that going left at the start has you sinking through the floor. Nevertheless, what's here is very compelling.

The athmosphere created by the graphics and the audio is really nice.
The weapon has an interesting look and feel.
It would have been great to have some variation with the enemies. Just a little variety in appearance and/or behaviour.

Pretty fun to play. Though the controls seemed a little cramped for often I had to use them. The dash was just a little off for me, but that could just be my broken brain ;). Congrats on the submission.

I didn't really understand the UI at the top of the screen. The battery bar going down makes sense, but there's two battery icons beside it too? And I have no idea what the percentage bar means.

Art + sound were cool though. And I liked zipping about with the dash.

I enjoyed both the desperate, desolate feel of the premise and story, and the delightful zapping sound as I siphoned electricity to stay alive. I'd love to see more of this world!

Thank you for your feedback, everyone! @wheybags I've updated the description here to include a small explanation on how the batteries work. Unfortunately we did not have time to make a tutorial

Cool playground for this idea of feeding off enemies to survive! It's perhaps a bit too lenient in that running and mashing the attack button renders you virtually unkillable, but that's nothing that can't be tweaked. The addition of the kind of... full power overcharge mode? is something I really enjoyed. It's a very fun and satisfying reward for staying on top of your power levels. Thanks for make!

A nice little game that has an interesting mechanic incorporating the 10 seconds, great visuals as well! The only thing to improve the hit mechanic as it took several hits to kill an enemy, unless ofcourse the enemy simply takes several hits to get killed, but if thats the case than I think there needs to be a better way of communicating the enemies hit points

I think my health/power bar broke, it wasn't contiguous. I didn't really understand attacking enemies, it seemed a bit luck based as to how I could minimize damage, I sometimes couldn't tell if I had hit them. I really liked the animations and art though, also good sound design.

Very fun and atmospheric game. The sound design and graphics are just amazing, but the combat feels a bit lackluster, as I was just spamming. Also encountered a bug where my battery started draining from the random middle parts. But overall a very great game!

At start the game is a bit confusing but after looking at the How the batteries work section in your post I was able to figure out how it works.

The game is fun, even if the fighting can be a bit annoying sometimes.

Good job making that game I really enjoyed it !

Cool game! I struggled at the beginning multiple times as I was not used to the controls and had to check them multiple times from your page. When I figured this out it was pretty cool to jump and dash forward. I did not feel much change when gaining batteries when my battery storage was full.
Sound effects were nice and they gave a cool robotic feel to it all.
Overall good jam game!

Simple but fun. The setting kinda reminds me of Machinarium which is good. Nice little game!

I really liked the art of the enemies and the player. Also, the music / sound effects were crisp!

Really liked the character art. Took a while to figure out what was going on with the battery mechanic (didn't read the description to begin with), but was quite fun once I understood.
Did find it strange that you could stand on top of the enemies which stopped you from getting into the put that had lots of them.

Nice! If I can make some comments: You should put the controls somewhere in the game: classic solution put them in the sky at the beginning, the hitbox of the weapon and the enemy is bit complicated to apprehend and there does not seems to be a way to hit without being hit. Last thing, the energy gauge is bit bugged out (with light turned on and off at seemingly random point). Apart from that, the graphics are nice and you could do something with the idea :)

Agree with @epeachyband, thought of Machinarium too. Very nice visuals. Title music theme is so groovy, I love it! In-game tutorial is a nice touch, it probably should be more forgiving (i.e I died from walking in different direction, huh), but considering the time it requires to polish such things, no complaints here :)

Nice visuals, loved the setting! The gameplay based on the theme worked well, loved the animations when depleting and re-charging the batteries.

I liked the story telling of the game. Overall very solid entry. Struggled a bit at the part where there were a bunch of enemies... I wanted to defeat them but had trouble getting to the ground 😅
