The Artist by Tomga

made by Tomga for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Play your cards wisely and defeat The Artist. But be careful, as he likes to paint on your cards!

I suggest downloading the game, as the web version is missing some assets. If you do play the web version, make sure to fullscreen it!

You can also play it on itch io here: https://tomga.itch.io/the-artist !

It was kinda hard to figure out what was going on, but it seems to have potential

Seems like a pretty cool game, some UX improvements would go a long way!

I played this for you on [stream](https://www.twitch.tv/timbeaudet) and I think I gave good feedback there, though I was quite confused! If so give a heart, and if not, don't!!

Neat game. Reminds me of Inscryption a bit. Figuring out how to place the cards was a bit confusing, but it has a lot of potential. Good job!

I'm uh...really bad at this. I don't think I ever managed to do even a single point of damage on the Artist. Maybe I'm not fully comprehending the rules, but I tried a few times and really struggled to get through his defenses.

I like the idea of the Artist drawing on your cards to give them new abilities! It seems like I'm just incentivized to play my entire hand whenever I can though, otherwise I'll be at a disadvantage.

Neat idea though! I always like seeing card-based games in LD. :)

Was a bit confused at first but I think I got the hang of playing cards. However it was very difficult. Interesting concept though, I do like how you incorporated the every 10 seconds mechanic.

The first play of the game hard to understand and turns was confusing that I had the feeling that the Artists got a better board than me.
I think you got a nice idea, but the user experience need an improvement for player to understand how to play correctly the game.

This was hard to play, not sure if it was bugged or something but I seemed to only be able to attack with 1 card at the start of my turn and my opponent could use all of theirs? Also, cards seemed to randomly disappear.
It's a shame because I love the concept but couldn't make it past the 3rd move to experience much of the game.

Cool little board game.
I didn’t understand right away that when my cards are highlighted, I can attack. As a result, he lost. Good graphic design in the style of the 90s.

Overall good art. I generally like the effects that the artist gives you and that they're good as well as bad. The rest of the game is a classic card game. Its playable and beatable, so good job
Now to the critique. Sometimes the enemy cards were attacking in random directions. The visual effect of the artist drawing on your cards could be more pronounced/indicating that its the artist drawing on your cards somehow, at first i wondered why my cards kept exploding :joy:

Thank you for all of the reviews! I agree that the tutorial should have been made much better and I'm trying to fix all of the bugs. I'll deffinetly try to make this a much better game after the jams ends. Thanks again!

this is one of the more interesting uses of the theme - the idea that your cards change if you are not fast enough is nice. The game could be slightly more balanced (it seems easy once you figure it out)

It took me a little bit to figure out what I was doing, but I really enjoyed it! The monsters were well balanced, and I liked the artwork!

I recorded myself playing so you can have some extra feedback:

Reminded me a lot of Inscryption. Having to figure out what/how the card types attack took a bit of time, some indicators on the cards could help here. Otherwise the art is very nice and the game is nice to play. I couldn't find a way to get back to the main menu or close the game after a round though and restarting the game everytime you finish a round is a bit annoying.
