Click to shoot (hold down for continuous shooting)
Bosses spawn every 10 seconds
(even if you didn't kill the last one!)
Your bullets collide with their bullets -- use this as a last-minute shield!

I made this game in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 51, where the theme was "Every 10 seconds." This was my first Ludum Dare game. The source code is available as a ZIP file below. The game was made with Godot 3.5, graphics were made with GIMP, and sounds were made with sfxr and BeepBox. The font used is HelvetiPixel by pentacom (released into the public domain).
Please leave feedback including any and all comments, criticisms, and compliments! Thank you!

Changelog:

V2: Added support for other locales. If using an AZERTY keyboard, it should now allow you to play with ZQSD rather than WASD. (This update should have no effect if you were already using a QWERTY keyboard layout.)

The variety in the bosses was fun, especially the ones that make you aim *just* right. The explosions when the enemy dies is also a nice touch that may or may not have gotten me several times.

On the critique side, the audio's fine, and art definitely needs work, but there is never a question in how to play the game which is good.

@scidev I wholeheartedly agree. If I had more time, the first thing I would have done is redo the art. Any recommendations for software/tutorials for better art?

@cafebeef
For drawing, I personally use **Krita** (from KDE), which is optimized for painting, but it has pixel art tools too.
- **GIMP** is a similar story, but more popular.
- I've also heard **Photoshop** is good if you pay for it.
- If you're more interested in 3D, you can look into using **Blender**.

In terms of learning, go online and look for resources on the **basic principles** of art **(3d forms, composition, color theory, etc.)** and then look into each of those, **practicing each of those skills as you go**.

And finally, don't forget to **have fun**! If making art is becoming boring, try a new kind or take a break and come back to it.

I'm a big fan of bullet-hells so this game was very enjoyable. Sometimes the bullets were a little hard to see because the color values of the bullets and the bg were very similar (ie. clarity with some of the visuals, the blue boss in particular).

I like the little song as it suited well with the game. Very nice work :D

The simple joy of that one bullet that hits, good job on your first LD game ! As it was said art is bit simple, but at least you can now take some time to enhance that and learn so congrats :)

The last boss was hard to beat. My eyes were crossed. It was a little bit epileptic :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

When a new enemy spawns that you don't know it can be hard. But the Checkpoints are great!
Would hate to start over with the same. ha ha Nicely balanced overall.
As always I tend to focus on the bullets and not the enemies so I had to dodge too much to actually kill them... ha ha ..
Well done.

well done! I really like that each boss explodes into one final bullet pattern when you destroy them. It seems like you balanced that really well so it fills out the last few seconds before the next boss arrives. A lot of games in this jam have a little bit of a problem where you have to wait around for a bit until the next ten-second timer is ready. It's a very small problem, obviously, but I was pleased to see you found such a clean way to avoid it!

Fun game. Great concept and I liked that the bosses keep just keep coming even.

It's an interesting decision to make enemy bullets destroyable with your bullets. From most of the bullet hell games I've played, that doesn't happen. It's neat because you can block enemy shots coming at you, but it also blocks your shots at them, making them often pretty hard to hit.
I thought that was a really neat decision! Great job.

Interesting that you can shoot the bullets with your own bullets. This makes it easier as well as harder to fight the boss. Fun game!

Nice twin-stick. The simple graphics makes it easier to see and control the situation when you have multiple bosses going on. Great game.

Very smooth controls & cool effects, great first game! I like how the bosses were defending against your OHKO bullet more than you were defending against them

Love a bullet hell type of games! Well implemented and great to see many different bosses! This would go super well with some hectic music. Perhaps next time. Either way, nice one!

I did it \o/ that was tough  I had both the last 2 bosses at once and it was a nightmare haha ^^
I did suffer from some bad frame drops, but nothing I couldn't deal with ^^ great first LD!

@rickylee Thanks for the feedback! Would you mind sharing your system specs?

I tested the game on my laptop only after the deadline, and I noticed it could lag a bit (down to about 30 fps for me). But on my desktop (pretty beefy, AMD 5800X/RTX 3070), it ran at 144 fps no problem. I wonder if upgrading to OpenGL3 and using GPU particle effects would have made it faster?

@cafebeef mine aren't as beefy but they run current gen games ok, i5-11400 / GTX 1650
its could be due to the browser I used, OperaGX which is Chrome based.

Hope that helps

I loved it! It's an interesting take on a bullet hell game. It's really nice that you can just retry the current boss instead of starting all over. I really wish it was longer though! If you expand on this in some way, I'd love to play it. :)

To be critical as well: Obviously the art could be better, although I think it's okay. If there was a neat UI and font fitting the style of the sprites, perhaps a nice background or light effect for the player/bosses/bullets or something, it would certainly be a solid style!
I like the gameplay and audio as they are. Simple, but fun!

That was a fun little game :-) I also like the sound and music of it.
Its nice what you got out of very basic textures.

One thing which would be really cool would be some powerups for better weapons and some more levels.

@gapagames @aligator Thanks for the feedback! I've been mulling over whether I want to make a larger version of this game with maybe 10-100 levels. I'm considering adding co-op multiplayer with different classes of ships (each with a special weapon or something), and have each boss drop different powerups (maybe increased ship speed or firing rate?). Do you have any thoughts on it? Does it sound like a game you'd enjoy?

fun little bullet hell game. Although I feel the game would have loved a health system for both the player and bosses instead of a 1 shot death.
